5.0 out of 5 starsCompelling, a little naughty and a great story
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2021
Totally spoiler free but OMG what an ending. I kind of hate myself for reading it the day it came out as now I have to wait until November! 😬😭

KF Brenne books are always hilarious and I really enjoy her unique characters. This book was no different, although it did have some surprising sexual situations! Finley was a strong character who didn't take rubbish from anyone, and Nyfain-the-sometimes-jerk was compelling. I loved Finleys' connection with her family and how they drove her to try and help the Kingdom.

If you haven't tried K F Breene you are missing out.

3.0 out of 5 starsGreat story but left me conflicted
Reviewed in Australia on 24 October 2021
I really liked the storyline in this take on Beauty and the Beast, but I am conflicted. I am all for the broody hero, though we find he is more layered as the story continues. Our heroine is tough without being invulnerable and I am curious to learn more about her repressed animal, though I have my suspicions.
I'm not generally a prude but the graphic, in-your-face language and scenarios, particularly the Hadriel character, seemed overly aggressive and killed the romance element for me at times. The regular use of the c bomb is a huge turn off for me and the sudden urge the characters seemed to have to talk dirty in the middle of other issues was a bit jolting.
With that said, if you can look past the list interludes, there was action, adventure and world building that make me want to search up the second installment to see what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars The humour, the storyline!!!

My god that woman can write!! Loved the side characters, the main character, the main interest. Love their depth, chemistry, the humour! So many laugh out loud moments! The people felt real, relatable, honest. Absolutely fantastic. If you like a bit of smut in your books but also a bloody good storyline, purchase immediately. It’s a good time. This is my new favourite series. AAA+ and all of the stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Almost DNF

After struggling through the whole book, I'm disappointed in the plot overall. It has such a good opportunity to be a great story but at times the characters are confusing to follow and setting hard to follow.
The structure of the plot seemed imbalanced, especially towards the end where a lot happened initially before laborious fluff towards the end.
(Don't even mention the 'smut' in this story, it was laughable at best and aggressively written - not in a good way)
There's a second book, which I hope will be better but I won't be buying it.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 - good read

This one is a tough one to write a review.
3.5 stars - the world building is good, the character arcs are good too. I have the other two books in the series and will definitely read.
The smut is great! I just feel like the story got a little confusing for “why’s”. I needed my details as to Why is the world the way it is, why does the curse effect, etc etc.
But it was still enjoyable and I am interested to see what happens in the next two.

I came here for smut, stayed for the plot

I loved how this book was written, it was funny and sweary, sexy and romantic. I can’t wait to read the next book! Loved the main MC but also rVing about the supporting characters at the castle.

Definitely for the lovers of Amelia Hutchins’ Flames of Chaos.

I dislike these kinds of books. Did not realise the content as Ive read KFBreen before which never had this kind of smut. Sorry but that is just my opinion.
I'd love to get a refund but dont think that is what will happen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A dark and delicious fairytale retelling perfect for fans of the Fall of Under Series
Reviewed in Australia on 7 December 2021
A RUIN OF ROSES!

All hail the queen of fuckery, her royal heinous K.F. Breene!
Our queen doesn’t do things by halves and this book is a prime example of that. A dark Beauty and the Beast retelling with lots and lots of smut. You’ve been warned to have those pearls ready for clutching, and you’ll be clutching them.
This book was everything I expected and then some. Very different to her other series this book will leave you wanting more!
I think what I enjoyed most was the humour. It’s hard to find books that are dark and smutty while also having some laugh out loud hilarious moments. Finley our MFC is smart, funny, independent and doesn’t take any sh!t. She’s knows what she wants and is no damsel in distress.
The chemistry between her an Nyfain was addicting. Although I did find him extremely frustrating at times. Our rough around the edges anti-hero who’s default is dark and brooding. He has more mood swings than a pendulum clock. Frustrating as he was I get it though, it added to the whole push pull dynamic between him and Finley to build that explosive chemistry to exploding point.
I don’t normally go into detail about the supporting characters but I have to stop and mention Hadriel. He is a hoot. The gay best friend we all wish we had, he is fabulous while also being hilarious and an unapologetic drunk.
This book is definitely not for everyone, but if you like your books dark with a lot of smut and have little to no triggers then you’ve come to the right place.
Also if you’re a fan of the Fall of Under series by Kathryn Ann Kingsley then this will be right up your alley.

1.0 out of 5 stars Utter trash and a waste of time
Reviewed in Australia on 9 April 2022
Look I'm all for spicy fiction that is unashamedly filthy but this was utter trash. The smut *might* have been sexy if the characters had any kind of substance, chemistry or erm... Character. The story is as dull and non existent as the characters are bland and the sex is gratuitous and funny but not in a "well this is unexpectedly spicy" kinda of way and more "written like a lemon fan fiction by someone whose only experience of sex is bad porn". This is bottom shelf Kindle unlimited shovelware and I only got as far as I did because I listened to the audio book and I have very low standards when multitasking but GOOD GRIEF it was just painful (despite the surprisingly good narration) and I'm gobsmacked that this kind of crap gets published. I need to go and scrub my brain, I feel dumber having listened to this.

I have been in a, major book slump for weeks.. My kindle streaks down to 0.. I had been waiting for this book for what felt like forever but it was released and I couldn't read it..

Finally I took a, moment to sit and read.. I couldn't put it down! Oh man it's amazing.. A story we all know and yet we have no idea at the same time.. I adore Breenes writing style.. She's so sophisticated including the smut..

I'm in for the long haul.. Eagerly awaiting book 2.. Also Hadriel is like my spirit animal

Wow, you really turned up the smut factor in this one lol. Normally I would HATE that kind of book, but you did it so skillfully and with such a good story (and some humor) that it made a great combination. A true feat!
