5.0 out of 5 starsCompelling, a little naughty and a great story
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2021
Totally spoiler free but OMG what an ending. I kind of hate myself for reading it the day it came out as now I have to wait until November! 😬😭

KF Brenne books are always hilarious and I really enjoy her unique characters. This book was no different, although it did have some surprising sexual situations! Finley was a strong character who didn't take rubbish from anyone, and Nyfain-the-sometimes-jerk was compelling. I loved Finleys' connection with her family and how they drove her to try and help the Kingdom.

If you haven't tried K F Breene you are missing out.

3.0 out of 5 starsGreat story but left me conflicted
Reviewed in Australia on 24 October 2021
I really liked the storyline in this take on Beauty and the Beast, but I am conflicted. I am all for the broody hero, though we find he is more layered as the story continues. Our heroine is tough without being invulnerable and I am curious to learn more about her repressed animal, though I have my suspicions.
I'm not generally a prude but the graphic, in-your-face language and scenarios, particularly the Hadriel character, seemed overly aggressive and killed the romance element for me at times. The regular use of the c bomb is a huge turn off for me and the sudden urge the characters seemed to have to talk dirty in the middle of other issues was a bit jolting.
With that said, if you can look past the list interludes, there was action, adventure and world building that make me want to search up the second installment to see what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars KF Breene got let off her leash and I am here for it!

This book was the absolute best of Breenes zaney sense of humour, mixed with the plot of my favourite fairytale and enough heat to keep me warm on a cold, rainy day. I absolutely loved Finleys inner monolog and her conversations with her animal, I loved the variety in supporting characters, and the back and forth with the beast. Fantastic and funny, it's left me gagging for more!

I came here for smut, stayed for the plot

I loved how this book was written, it was funny and sweary, sexy and romantic. I can’t wait to read the next book! Loved the main MC but also rVing about the supporting characters at the castle.

Definitely for the lovers of Amelia Hutchins’ Flames of Chaos.

5.0 out of 5 stars A dark and delicious fairytale retelling perfect for fans of the Fall of Under Series
Reviewed in Australia on 7 December 2021
A RUIN OF ROSES!

All hail the queen of fuckery, her royal heinous K.F. Breene!
Our queen doesn’t do things by halves and this book is a prime example of that. A dark Beauty and the Beast retelling with lots and lots of smut. You’ve been warned to have those pearls ready for clutching, and you’ll be clutching them.
This book was everything I expected and then some. Very different to her other series this book will leave you wanting more!
I think what I enjoyed most was the humour. It’s hard to find books that are dark and smutty while also having some laugh out loud hilarious moments. Finley our MFC is smart, funny, independent and doesn’t take any sh!t. She’s knows what she wants and is no damsel in distress.
The chemistry between her an Nyfain was addicting. Although I did find him extremely frustrating at times. Our rough around the edges anti-hero who’s default is dark and brooding. He has more mood swings than a pendulum clock. Frustrating as he was I get it though, it added to the whole push pull dynamic between him and Finley to build that explosive chemistry to exploding point.
I don’t normally go into detail about the supporting characters but I have to stop and mention Hadriel. He is a hoot. The gay best friend we all wish we had, he is fabulous while also being hilarious and an unapologetic drunk.
This book is definitely not for everyone, but if you like your books dark with a lot of smut and have little to no triggers then you’ve come to the right place.
Also if you’re a fan of the Fall of Under series by Kathryn Ann Kingsley then this will be right up your alley.

A Ruin of Roses is the first part of a sexy retelling of the Beauty and the Beast tale. It is described as dark but I personally didn't find it so. On the contrary. Yes, the heroine is foul mouthed and the sex is not on the sweet side, which might be why it is described as dark. Or the attribute is simply to warn off potential readers who expect a clean, fluffy Disney style romance. This book is definitely not for them.

But it is HILARIOUS and super fun to read. KFBreene is taking us on a wild ride through a demon cursed kingdom that fights for survival against a deadly sickness on the one side and magical imprisonment including demonic (read: sexual) tortures on the other side of the realm. What makes this book and all of the author's other work so special and uniquely hers is the specific kind of humour that heats the pages. It shines through the situations, the conversations, actions and the thought processes of the characters. Once again we are treated to the most peculiar, eccentric supportive characters whose personalities crack me up every time. Usually it's a whole crew of side characters that run the show but in this book the trophy goes to one person alone: Hadriel takes the icing on the cake. No words can describe him. Well, KF Breene obviously can. Point in case. Suffice to say: you're in for a treat here!!!

As for the romance aspect, the interactions between the protagonists are not sweet or shy or ... "romantic". Instead they are rough and raw, honest and direct. And helluva hot. I am a sucker for another device Breene uses often to deepen the main couple's connection: the merging and mating of their specific powers/gifts/magic. This makes me all mushy on the inside. Combined with the snarky humour I find myself alternating between happy sighs and genuine laughter throughout the story, leaving me with a satisfied smile at the end-for-now. What more can you ask in a book?

Finley and Nyfian are great as adversaries and their attraction is delicious. The supporting cast of characters are loveable and crazy or a combination of both. The message about being seen for your true inner beauty really resonated with me. I can't wait for more castle shenanigans and family drama in the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Officially ruined by AROR
Reviewed in the United States on 8 October 2021

KF Breene said she had let herself off the hook when it came to writing this book. She wasn't kidding.

A Ruin Of Roses is darker. It's sexier. It's more blunt, irreverent. But it also has a poignancy, a touch bittersweet, a bit melancholic. It's not just the promised dong slap to the face, A Ruin Of Roses is sacrifice, and defiance, and a spark of sinful hope.

This is a Beauty and the Beast retelling, and throughout, you'll be able to pinpoint the original road map Breene is following. But other than those touchstones, AROR is nothing like the original tale.

As with all KF Breene books, the humor is right there, in your face, you can't miss it. I read this as soon as it dropped at midnight, and was laughing not twenty minutes into it. But as I said there's something more to this retelling.

There are the Breene trademark misfit characters supporting Beauty and her Beast. Finley, our Beauty, is a strong, intelligent, independent heroine. And Nyfian, Beast, is all the Breene heroes rolled into one, with a heavy dose of alpha added for seasoning. Delicious!

A Ruin Of Roses ends on a cliffhanger. Breene has stated that there are two, possibly three more entries in this series. Bring them on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious and Dark

I have read pretty much everything K.F. Breene has written, but this feels like nothing she's written before. And I loved it! It was fun and dark and entertaining and fresh. I am thoroughly enjoying the series. There were moments where I paused and thought "that's different", but I rolled right on. And that's the advice I give people when reading this series. It doesn't include "Deliciously Dark" in the title for nothing. If you like vanilla sex, this may not be for you. But if you like reading about a strong heroine who doesn't suffer fools, a growly male lead, and funny supportive characters, I highly recommend this series.

Gosh… this dark steamy tale is so entrenching. I feel like I was there with Finley as one of her invisible supporters. While there are lots of steamy scenes between the crew and main characters there could always be more! The story is woven in a way that we are getting a lot of character building and being drip fed the important essence of it all.

Oh the steam. This book has the most delicious pearl clutch worthy scenes without the loss of a fantastic story. If you like strong female leads, Finley is your girl. And boy oh boy does she have a smokin hot dominate alpha male with whom to contend. Love the supporting characters as well. Can’t wait to see how the rest of the dark story unfolds.

Sexy, spicy, and dark, this fairy tale retelling is like nothing I have ever read before. The characters are intense and the supporting characters add a lot to the overall atmosphere. I even learned a few new dirty words.
