5.0 out of 5 starsCompelling, a little naughty and a great story
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2021
Totally spoiler free but OMG what an ending. I kind of hate myself for reading it the day it came out as now I have to wait until November! 😬😭

KF Brenne books are always hilarious and I really enjoy her unique characters. This book was no different, although it did have some surprising sexual situations! Finley was a strong character who didn't take rubbish from anyone, and Nyfain-the-sometimes-jerk was compelling. I loved Finleys' connection with her family and how they drove her to try and help the Kingdom.

If you haven't tried K F Breene you are missing out.

3.0 out of 5 starsGreat story but left me conflicted
Reviewed in Australia on 24 October 2021
I really liked the storyline in this take on Beauty and the Beast, but I am conflicted. I am all for the broody hero, though we find he is more layered as the story continues. Our heroine is tough without being invulnerable and I am curious to learn more about her repressed animal, though I have my suspicions.
I'm not generally a prude but the graphic, in-your-face language and scenarios, particularly the Hadriel character, seemed overly aggressive and killed the romance element for me at times. The regular use of the c bomb is a huge turn off for me and the sudden urge the characters seemed to have to talk dirty in the middle of other issues was a bit jolting.
With that said, if you can look past the list interludes, there was action, adventure and world building that make me want to search up the second installment to see what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars The humour, the storyline!!!

My god that woman can write!! Loved the side characters, the main character, the main interest. Love their depth, chemistry, the humour! So many laugh out loud moments! The people felt real, relatable, honest. Absolutely fantastic. If you like a bit of smut in your books but also a bloody good storyline, purchase immediately. It’s a good time. This is my new favourite series. AAA+ and all of the stars.

I came here for smut, stayed for the plot

I loved how this book was written, it was funny and sweary, sexy and romantic. I can’t wait to read the next book! Loved the main MC but also rVing about the supporting characters at the castle.

Definitely for the lovers of Amelia Hutchins’ Flames of Chaos.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cliffhanger alert!

Finley is a shifter, who has never been able to shift. The kingdom was cursed before she was of age, and as a result she’s never even met her animal.

She does have a way with the everlass plant though, and has devised many elixirs to help heal, soothe, and most importantly: pause the sickness.

Finley has taken some risks over the years to harvest everlass from the Forbidden Forest when her stocks are low. Twice she has been almost caught by the beast who roams and protects the forest. But one night, he turns up at her house to cart her away for her crimes. She goes with him to save her family, only to discover that he isn’t just a beast after all. He is a man. A handsome, surly, grumpy man, covered in scars and ink. The last of the nobles, dutifully bound to protect the forest at night.

An unforeseen side effect of being around the beast, Nyfain? Her animal within surges to life. She wants to mate with Nyfain’s animal and keeps pushing Finley to cave. Can Finley and Nyfain fight their own animals? Or does their attraction stem to their human sides too, even if they’re both too stubborn to admit it?

It’s a cliffhanger! I did not know this! I need the next book now please! I really need to stop going in so blind.

A dark and dirty retelling of beauty and the beast with Breene’s trademark sardonic humour laced throughout. I absolutely love her insults and swear words, some of which are intrinsically rude, and others which are just surprising and hilarious.

There is a lot of talk about sex, and a lot of sex happening in a…scenic?…way. But not as much happening between the main characters. I think this book is mostly the delicious build-up before the explosion (hopefully) in book 2. Thank goddess it comes out next week! I’m off to pre-order.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great first part of the story but has a bit of a Cliffhanger!

A good start to a Beauty & The Beast retelling. KF Breene has done a a great job of making the story her own.

The characters are strong, independents, sassy, determined and stubborn. The butlers wit and comments make me smile. There is enough steam and spice to keep you rooting for the couple. Sometimes I wanted to strangle the main characters because you can see the things they can't but that's a sign of a good story teller.

As for the important stuff...
Spice:🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5
Characters: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Plot:⭐⭐⭐ (mainly because I didn't expect there to be a cliffhanger)

Im off to read the next book in the series... Need to know the resolution to the cliffhanger! I Still recommend! I look forward to seeing how the story and the characters grow from this point forward!

I've got to admit the title KF chose is catchier. I wasn't sure what to expect from a reimagining, they tend not to be my thing, but this is so far and away from BATB that it didn't end up bothering me.

I really liked the FU attitude of Finley and found the castle curse hilarious.

Am I put of by a bit of a potty mouth on the main characters? Not really.
Would I carry on with this series? Definitely.

Absolutely loved the storyline of this book, the constant will they, won’t they, laced through the pages as we got to know the main characters and how their lives had been ruled by circumstances they were unable to have any effect on. Can’t wait for the next one!

So many things about this book had me gripped to the story. The love/hate between the 2 main characters. The side character add the perfect amount of comedy. I finished this in about 2 days (I have little ones) but when i was finished a dove right into book 2. Some things were predictable but other things i'm still trying to figure out which I love.
