Yet another book which is obscenely biased.

Russia during 1917 was a complete mess. World War I had decimated Russia, and there were two revolutions that year. By 1918 a horrendous civil war had broken out. So we get another book about how brutal the Bolsheviks were. It's a tired trope designed to dehumanise Russians and anybody who has the temerity to say something remotely good about the Bolsheviks. Yes the Bolsheviks did brutal things. But Russia had been invaded by no less than a dozen foreign powers. Internal opposition to the Bolsheviks often took on the form of pogroms against Jews and other minorities. What were the Bolsheviks supposed to do in the face of this opposition? Were they supposed to hold hands and hope for the best?
The book is full of lies of omission. If you read this book counter it by reading Isaac Deutscher' biography on Trotsky. It's also useful to go to the source and read some of the primary material and make up your own mind.

This is a very well written and masterful treatment of two of the seminal events in the 20th century, from which all other historical occurrences flow. In particular Hitler's ill fated Barbarossa. The text is well referenced but I have noticed two glaring errors:
1 In the last sentence on page 72 there is a reference to Boris Alliluev renting a flat, I think the correct name is Sergei Alliluev (1866 - 1945), Stalin's father- in-law.

2 In paragraph 3 on page 156 "....Sovnarkom stopped using the old style Gregorian calendar. The country jumped thirteen days to be in line with the Julian calendar of the western world. " In fact it's the other way around as the Bolsheviks ditched the Julian calendar for the superior Gregorian one.

A sweeping, important, masterful account of the Russian revolution and (probably less well known) civil war. Sadly, it will now also deepen your understanding of the new war. There's more material about tensions among the Whites than the Reds. Practically all the leaders were thugs, but the Whites lost because the Reds' ruthlessness was also political.

In the end the allies were marginal & probably get more space than they deserve, but you can witness the bellicosity of Churchill.

A 5 star text let down by the publisher's poor production values. It needs a dramatis personae and far, far more maps, and the index is laughably short.

I had almost zero knowledge of the scale of Western intervention to stop the Boloshvik revolution and it gave me a perspective on the roots of Stalin distrust for Allies in 1939. Read The Glossary at the end first. Horrendous brutality on all sides made me think a 'plague on all your houses' .
