I was born in Kent but spent most of my working life in London and Surrey. I was an apprentice florist to Constance Spry Ltd, a prestigious Mayfair shop that throughout the Sixties and Seventies teemed with both royalty and ‘real’ celebrities. What an eye-opener for a working-class kid from the Garden of England! I swore then, probably whilst I was scrubbing the floor or making the tea, that I would have a shop of my own one day. It took until the early Eighties, but I did it. Sadly the recession wiped us out, and I embarked on a series of weird and wonderful jobs; the last one being a bookshop manager. Surrounded by books all day, getting to order whatever you liked, and being paid for it! Oh bliss!

And now I live in a village in the Lincolnshire Fens with my partner, Jacqueline, and four Springer spaniels and one little rescue, Breton spaniel. I had been writing mysteries for years but never had the time to take it seriously. Now I write full-time, and as my partner is a highly decorated retired police officer; my choice of genre is a no-brainer! I have an on-tap police and judicial consultant, who makes exceedingly good tea!

I have set my crime thrillers here in the misty fens because I sincerely love the remoteness and airy beauty of the marshlands. This area is steeped in superstitions and lends itself so well to murder!

I am lucky enough to be one of the amazing Joffe Books team of authors and am really enjoying being able to spend time doing what I love... writing!

This book was more convoluted than the others have been and finding the baddies more difficult. It would have helped had Nikki and her team had been able to identify the victims.
There are prejudices coming out of the woodwork all over the place and it takes a few clever people to work out fact from fiction.
Nikki's mother is in over her head with her own mysteries and trying hard to keep them away from Nikki in case she was discovered and found herself in deep water.
All in all it's a great read and certainly worth the hours to read it.

I have read and enjoyed all of the Joy Ellis "Fens" books and was looking forward to this one. However, for the first time in a very long time I admitted defeat and by page 165 decided I just couldn't read any more.
I did not like the introduction of Eve and her cronies in an earlier book but assumed they were just part of the single story. In this book they are a total distraction and I have no interest whatsoever in their ridiculous activities - their inclusion totally spoils the book for me which is a great shame. Hopefully the next book will revert to the excellent main characters and leave out the "padding" of Eve and friends. If this is not the case then my Fenland reading will sadly come to an end.

I have read all of Joy's books over a number of years now and have given 4 or 5 star ratings for most ... apart from three - Guide Star (sickly) The Dying Light (poor story) and this one (just appalling!) I stopped reading it at around 50%. I fell asleep too many times reading this book, whereas I cannot normally put her books down until they are finished! There are too many characters; reading it is like wading through treacle. The Miss Marple element is completely unnecessary and is distracting. Joy has also recently started to introduce the "F" word and other unnecessary elements of bad language ... things are going down hill Joy ... get a grip and return to your previous form.

I have always loved all books by Ruth Ellis. I have never given below a 5 star I don't think but I found this very slow, too many different names and characters to remember and as for the side story with Eve and Wendy going to The Lakes on a mission. Very dragged out and tedious. I actually nearly gave up as I kept falling asleep but I did carry on. Ending was not forecast by me but to me, my opinion only of course, it had no spark just droned on and repeated things over and over as padding. I was really disappointed.

This is book #12 in the DI Nikki Galena series as Joseph and our usual chums return to solve the murders of 2 young couples and the abduction of their friend Mickey.
In parallel, Nikki's mother Eve, helps solve the 100 year old mystery of the disappearance of a local artist when visiting the Lake District.
I found it a compelling read though the sheer number of different characters did rather confuse me at times!
If you liked previous Nikki Galena tales, you'll probably enjoy this one too.

Having read all of the previous Nikki Galena books, I eagerly anticipated this latest Joy Ellis offering. For me, compared to the original hard-hitting Galena thrillers, this one is not so much a thriller as a twee little whodunnit. It’s not the longest book in the world so adding a second sub plot involving Galena’s amateur sleuth mother and her pals merely diluted the main plot and, for me, made the whole thing disjointed and slightly juvenile. So much more could have been written about the goth murders to intrigue the reader, but every time that plot became interesting, we meandered into three ageing ‘Miss Marples’ solving a years old mystery. Even the main characters, Galena and Easter have become almost sedentary and easy going and needed inspiration from the amateur sleuths before they got their act in gear. Sorry, I so wanted to like this but couldn’t. If there’s another Galena effort please get back to basics and lose the embarrassing Eve and Wendy bits.
