Sonic Highways is an American TV documentary series created for HBO by Dave Grohl. The documentary was made concurrently with Foo Fighters' eighth album, Sonic Highways.[1] Grohl described the project as "a love letter to the history of American music".[2] The series debuted on October 17, 2014 and ran through December 4, 2014. The series had 8 episodes] Each episode features interviews with artists who recorded at the respective studios. Among them are Dolly Parton, Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat and Fugazi, Paul Stanley of Kiss, Joe Walsh of Eagles, Nancy Wilson of Heart, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, Zac Brown,[11] and Gary Clark, Jr.[4] There was also collaboration with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in New Orleans, which led to a live performance with Trombone Shorty.[11] The episode begins with a quote from a song that was recorded in their respective location and ends with a music video for that same song with animated lyrics appearing in the background.

It really doesn't matter if you're a fan of Foo Fighters, there's no doubt in my mind that their frontman Dave Grohl, can pretty much do whatever he fancies to inform or entertain an audience. Sonic Highways (which is also the title of his band's latest album), an eight episode series is what you might call the real meat and two veg behind recording sessions for Foo Fighters recent chart topper. Not only do you get to see the group perform every song from the album, you join Dave and his merry band on a journey of discovery. In essence, a musical history lesson of eight key United States cities and the scene/sound that emanates from each one by way of utilising a different studio in each town. And that's the key point here. It's not just a Foo Fighters visual document of the sessions that produced Sonic Highways , it's also a fascinating insight into what has influenced Dave Grohl and makes him such a talented man.
But don't worry if you're not really a Foo fan. The actual Foo Fighters song performances, shot beautifully and edited in what's called lyric style with the song words part of the visual component, are at the end of each episode, so if it's not your style you can skip them. My personal opinion is ALL performances are worth watching just to see the end result of the inspiration from the studio and the city that created them. And to top it off, all eight songs just sound amazing on the BluRay format having been mixed into 5.1 surround sound and mastered in Dolby HD. So kick back and have an American music history lesson with Dave Grohl as your guide. Did I mention the alumni of Americana music guest stars (and one very famous commander-in-chief) he interviews along the way? You'll be spotting living legends in every episode. Besides all of that, any man who can walk down Main Street, New Orleans wearing an Abba t-shirt has my utmost respect and admiration...oh and the series is really good too. As I said at the start of this review, it doesn't matter if you're not a Foo Fighters fan, this show, at the very least might make you a Dave Grohl fan. Essential viewing.

If you are a Foo Fighters fan or a music fan in general, buy this - you won't be disapointed

However this series of films collected on this DVD are brilliant, brilliant, brillliant! I have to admit Grohl has done a fantastic job with this. If you are a fan of music then this is an essential watch.
I hope he could do the same concept here in the UK. That would really something.
