Really good product, versatile use when playing with my toddler. Sadly, we were missing the horseshoe magnet so lacking some additional play usage with only the stick magnet.

4.0 out of 5 stars 6

4.0 out of 5 stars This is good, but not as good as another Mathlink set we have
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 May 2019
Style Name: Mathlink Builders
I got this for my nearly-5-year-old son to play with. We had a Mathlink set before (Learning Resources Mathlink Cubes Activity Set) which was great for him as it was teaching him maths, but because he was having fun whilst playing with it, it didn't feel like work.

This set though isn't as good. The concept is similar. Both sets have 100 blocks (10 cubes of each of 10 colours -brown, pink, white, black, red, green, orange, purple, blue, yellow) that link together to form shapes but whereas the other set involved learning including counting, 2D and 3D shapes, adding and subtracting, and comparing heights and lengths in this one it is mainly about making shapes so there feels like there is less variety. Also whereas the other set split the suggested activities onto nice-sized cards this one has them exercises in a fold-out pamphlet which just isn't as good or durable. And also I don't remember the cubes being this hard for my son to join as he is sometimes finding it difficult to link them.

True you don't have to stick to the suggested exercises, there is much more you can do with these blocks. For example the cubes have shapes on them of triangles, squares, pentagons and hexagons leading to another dimension of learning, and the cubes can also be used for simple things like helping with sums and counting.

So this set is good, but not as good as another Mathlink set we have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Has some good ideas to engage children with the topic, lots of assistance may be needed.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 March 2019
Style Name: Magnet Movers
This is an interesting little box of magnets and accessories, that introduces the concepts of magnetism to children in some intriguing ways. Pre-school children will already be aware of some of the properties of magnets from items such as fridge magnets, but this set goes beyond that.
What you actually get is quite simple - a multipurpose stand for four ring magnets that doubles as a fishing rod with the included string, a horseshoe magnet, a larger bar magnet, two magnetised balls, and a set of thirty coloured clear plastic discs bound with steel wire. These take up a fraction of the space within the box, but this may be useful for storing various objects necessary to use the magnets fully - paperclips and cardboard fish to make a magnetised fishing game, for example.
The small printed booklet included gives lots of ideas, which is a big plus, but there are some drawbacks.

Many of the activities are imaginative, but a lot of parental assistance will be required to decipher the activity, source any required additional materials and help to construct anything needed.

The magnets also require very good fine motion skills (hand movements) to control them effectively for most of the activities. Some of the activities are a challenge for adults to get right.

I'm normally a big fan of anything that engages children with science, but even allowing for the fact that the sturdy box is useful for storing 'bits', this could all have been put in a much smaller box.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value and an excellent learning resource.

I use similar cubes at school where I work. MathLink Builders are made to be used in a similar way. In fact, they can be used in a number of ways including simple building as well as learning about patterns and symmetry. There is a handy booklet included that has some interesting open ended challenges or problems. The cubes themselves are nicely colourful and fit together but I think younger children may find them hard to work with. I've just noticed they have holes of differing shapes to you can work on shape recognition and sorting. They are excellent value for money. There is a lot of learning involved with their play.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice STEM set
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 March 2019
Style Name: Magnet Movers
My two children have had fun with this: making things magically move across surfaces, or making the two magnetic balls revolve around each other by waving the other magnets over them, or seeing how many objects can stick to each magnet. I’ve also had fun working through the listed experiments with my children, for example building a compass by floating in a bowl a plate a magnet on it.

Quality of the materials seems good, and little resealable bags are included to hold all the little counters.

The magnets are not particularly powerful, but fully adequate for the experiments, and the metal hoops around the counters are a little thin and embedded to allow many to stick, in line, to the magnets. Even so, a nice set for a child, and great for the classroom.

4.0 out of 5 stars Educational toy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 June 2019
Style Name: Mathlink Builders
This is a great toy that will help teach your child some basic mathematical concepts. They are fun to play with and can be used in several different ways to explore patterns, shapes, sequences and connections. It is aimed at children from 5 upwards. Interest varies between children but this provides an entertaining way for learning for those who are ready to explore building.

There are 100 pieces in the set of cubes and activity cards are included for you to stimulate their interest. We found they needed a bit of use before the tightness of the joins loosened up comfortably. They are designed to be clipped together and pulled apart so they may need a fair bit of adult assistance to keep them interested to start with.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting tool to play with
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 April 2019
Style Name: Magnet Movers
There are a variety of magnets in here with the best probably being two doughnut magnets and two sphere magnets. The latter are plastic balls with two magnets at opposite ends but it means you can roll them along the floor and pick up things. Some magnets have colour coded poles (red and blue) and some are not - it would have been good if they were consistent with their colour coding to reinforce the learning of poles. The doughnut magnets were good for use as there a rod with a base which itself contains a magnet do you can drop the doughnuts magnets in and (with the right poles) let the magnets bounce up and down in the air.

Overall a good package of fun with an educational twist that doesn’t require batteries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good fun but not as robust as I’d like.

Lovely bright colours and lots of educational fun in this set. Unfortunately they are not as robust as they should be, the u shaped one snapped in two within five minutes of opening as it fell off the kitchen worktop. This is disappointing but the child who has this set still loves the rest of it.

Wonderful and easy to use toy and gets the child's mind engaged-there are a lot of suggested structures but there are also a great deal of possibilities with the imagination
packs as very lightweight and can be taken away on travels for an amusing toy on a child's own or together, Excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keeps kids quiet - so: good!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 June 2019

The children who have played with this have certainly found it absorbing (for at least 30 minutes!) and find it easy to use and understand. Creating new shapes seems like fun - not sure how long they will want to use it, but first impressions are favourable.
