To satisfy Todd's curiosity and earn his silence, Kurt Dussander (Ian McKellen, X-Men: Days of Future Past) reveals his secret past... but all too soon it becomes clear that Todd is not the one in control of this twisted psychological game and that if he lives through it, he will learn a very dangerous lesson.

The past beats inside me like a second heart

Based on a Steven King novella this is a chilling and disturbing tale which explores the pervasive nature of evil and poses the question whether its presence and manifestation is due to nature or nurture. Set in suburban America the highly unlikely conceit is that a bright middle-class teenage boy notices a curious resemblance between an old man living in his neighbourhood and the face of a Nazi officer contained within wartime photographs he has been researching for a school project. The confirmation comes early in the film and within a tense atmosphere of blackmail and suspicion there develops a disquieting co-dependence between the two protagonists. Ian McKellan’s sublime performance as the unrepentant chain-smoking war criminal is almost matched by that of Bran Renfro as the manipulative youngster obsessed by Nazism and the Holocaust. There are some notable scenes and that involving the SS uniform is perhaps the most intense as it encapsulates the power dynamics between the two. An impressive film, quietly understated but nevertheless powerful.

I think the film describe how easy its
to be manipulated if youre a week person,
in reality we have seen nowadays in Norway
who killed a lot of kids on an island very sad.
But the guy who killed the kids still have no regrets.
Well I really like this film and I recommend people
to see it. I have also a film with Brad Renfro Client,
its also a great film, and even there Brad Renfro show
what a great actor he was, sad that the drugs become hes fall.

Nice little movie

A nice little Stephen King adaption, with some seriesly disturbing undertones. A young boy developed an unhealthy obsession with nazis and (presumably) homoerotica when he discovers a real life nazi war criminal on his doorstep. Great performances, especially from a pre-Gandalf and magneto ian mckellen. He not only appears older 20 years ago than he does now, he creates a monster that has several layers. We as viewers can despise, yet sympathises and even quite like (at times) his evil portrayal. This is Stephen King done really well on a small scale. Not a classic, but well done nevertheless.

This is a well acted and for the most part, accurate adaptation of the book by Stephen King. Ian Mackellen's performance is especially good, and he plays the character in the book to perfection. I don't agree with some of the previous reviews who complain that the story has been hacked about, although the ending is somewhat different to the book. An underrated film in my opinion.

Yes, I collect Stephen King.

Have almost got all the films based on his books. There are still some out there that have ridiculous prices, one of them over a £100. I can wait though. I just put them on my Amazon lists and lo and behold my stuff eventually becomes affordable.
