"Dervla McTiernan has rocked the crime fiction world with good reason. Taut, tense and darkly addictive. A treat for lovers of fine crime writing." (Candice Fox, author of Crimson Lake)
Being brilliant has never been this dangerous....
When Dr. Emma Sweeney stumbles across the victim of a hit-and-run outside Galway University late one evening, she calls her partner, Detective Cormac Reilly, bringing him first to the scene of a murder that would otherwise never have been assigned to him.
A security card in the dead woman's pocket identifies her as Carline Darcy, a gifted student and heir apparent to Irish pharmaceutical giant Darcy Therapeutics. The multibillion-dollar company, founded by her grandfather, has a finger in every pie, from sponsoring university research facilities to funding political parties to philanthropy - it has funded Emma's own groundbreaking research. The enquiry into Carline's death promises to be high-profile and high-pressure.
As Cormac investigates, evidence mounts that the death is linked to a Darcy laboratory and, increasingly, to Emma herself. Cormac is sure she couldn't be involved, but as his running of the case comes under scrutiny from the department and his colleagues, he is forced to question his own objectivity. Could his loyalty to Emma have led him to overlook evidence? Has it made him a liability?

You won't find any bewildering leaps of imagination or deduction here, just good, solid police work by three-dimensional characters you would recognise in a visit to any large police station. I was particularly stuck by a scene, involving a DC making an unauthorised and contrary-to-procedure phone call to a police force in a neighbouring country after following a solid lead. I have been there myself, and everything about it rang true, especially the officer's self-doubt afterwards, and his worry that while moving an investigation on he risked tainting evidence.
The lead character, DS Reilly, is complex, far from infallible and in some ways deeply flawed. But this is not in the way that has become almost a compulsory stereotype in other fiction of this genre, on page and on screen. His flaws are small and everyday, and the result is relationships at work and at home which could be much better than he ends up making them. He's just like the rest of us, and so are his colleagues and the members of the public he encounters. Just like policing in real life.
I can't wait for the next one. This book can certainly be read on its own, but I suggest it's best devoured as a second course in a meal that begins with "The Ruin". Don't expect to get much else done until you've finished reading them though - they are compelling stories.
I don't understand why the author has the main protagonist and his partner so deeply involved in
the plot. I think this spoils the plot. Also one of the other cases which they were investigating seemed
to get forgotten.

Met Dervla McTiernan at an author visit to Newcastle NSW, and found her to be very generous with her information and time. Can see why one relates to her book characters so easily.

I like the developing characters and, while I agree with one reviewer, who felt that minor plot lines were not sufficiently followed up, I also think that it is a little like life, where loose ends remain and the tying-up of a case still leaves some issues unresolved. I rather liked the inclusion of several characters apart from the main protagonist, again quite realistic, as very few crimes are solved by one detective alone -I suspect? The plot does require a slight suspension of disbelief but not to a degree that it is wholly unrealistic; the academic setting is a rich seam of crime, not yet fully mined. It kept Morse going for a long time, after all. The author has a sure touch in her writing and I look forward to more from her, as soon as possible please!

There was enough intrigue to keep me guessing as to what was going to happen next, so much so that it only took me 5 evenings to finish the book!
I enjoyed ‘The Ruin’, the first book of the series, but I very much enjoyed this one even more and now await book #3 excitedly!!

The author is good at creating characters, both likeable and unlikeable . Sometimes a minor character comes alive with a few words. She has a way with words - the kind of phrase you wish you had thought of, yourself. Her other strength ,usually,is storytelling but I guessed the plot early on and eventual outcome . I felt vaguely disappointed at the end as I half expected a twist that would jolt me out of my imagined ending. It never came.
I would probably read the next book as there is a lot to like about this author.
