I DNF’d this book very early on and then decided to try again, only because it was a book club read thinking I’d probably give it a two star rating. I strongly disliked Teddy. I thought he was immature and silly and Ruthie was uptight. And they were. But at about the 45% mark I realised it was a cover. Both had difficult childhoods that impacted heavily on their adulthood’s. I often give up too quickly on books if I’m not drawn in right from the start and this book for me was a lesson in persevering. It is a very strong 4 and a half stars from me.

The amount of time talking about hair and straight teeth in this book ......it could be halved. I read it in a day,Its cute, really irritating and no doubt will still be a #bookstagram must read. Its nothing like the hating game. This style of writing and topics, literally Hair, Teeth and Turtles ...... 🤦♀️

I enjoy thorne's writing, but I got to 20% and didn't think I'd be in to this one, turns out I was wrong - solid 4 stars.. i like the subtle plot twists, hidden agendas and side character stories. I also like the low angst and relatable sex scenes.. I didn't connect with ruthie and teddy as much as the characters from the hating game. But boy oh boy, RENATA. She saved this book and made it a billion times more enjoyable and effortless. I encourage you to pick this one up purely for her.

“Life requires full, up-to-the-neck participation”
Sally Thorne has once again delivered a beautifully written love story, where personal growth, compassion, courage and kindness are the focal point of the novel. Thorne has a knack of writing truly loveable MC’s who have walls up from past events, but have kind and caring souls within who show strength through their compassion.
I thoroughly enjoy how friendships are developed in Thorne’s books, both between the MC & LI, but also with the MC and the rest of the characters. Thorne has a real strength in the way that she writes relationships and the way that she gets you invested in all of the characters.
If you enjoy reading about kind, loving heroines who are just waiting to come out of their shell; empathetic, honest and charming ‘reformed bad boy’ love interests; along with a cast of outgoing, protective and humorous friends then I highly recommend this novel to you.

I just couldn’t get into this book. There was just nothing happening for so much of the story… and then suddenly everything gets tied up in a neat little bow so quickly if you blink you’ll miss it. I normally really like Sally Thorne’s stuff, but I was really disappointed here.

Second First Impressions is another story that makes you fall in love with the characters and makes you want them to be your lifelong friends. Funny and sweet. A story of friendships, love, self-discovery and give & take....and tortoises.

A slow to get started story, it’s easy reading and light, nice characters and good escapist reading, with a tidy ending.

A cosy, wonderful read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 April 2021Verified Purchase
Sally Thorne is an 'always going to read it the day it comes out' author for me. I love everything she writes and the way she can make a sentence sparkle; e.g. "The knowledge that my cuddle-bug soulmate might be just there, under that particular streetlight star, but I'm too chicken to go find him, makes my heart feel like a toothache."
I procrastinated starting this book on release day because I wanted to savour the feeling of still having it to read. I knew once I started it, I'd inhale every word, but I'm also not someone who can wait once something is released.
The plot is simple. Ruthie is 25 going on 125 and works at a retirement village. For the first time ever, she has people her own age on-site - Mel the temp, and Teddy, the new owner's son who can't quite get past his reputation as a charming rascal. While they work on making Ruthie feel 25 for once, Renata and Aggie, 91 and 89 respectively, steal every scene they're in as chief trouble makers at Providence retirement village. Cue: a warm hug of a book that is full of cute. I can't recommend it enough if you like even a sniff of a romance book. It's a 10/10.

This reader experienced Dazzlification

Wow.... just WOW I loved this book!
Ruthie meets Theo, a chance meeting at a petrol station and they both make a terrible first impression on each other. They don't realise that they will have a chance to make perhaps a better second impression.
So I am normally a psychological thriller reader however I needed a break with something light and funny and this ticked both boxes completely. By just 4% in I was out loud laughing, this has never happened to me before when reading a book! I loved Ruthie and Theodore and I loved what they each brought out in each other, add in the bubbly Melanie and the crazy but brilliant Parlonis and a few turtles and boy the story is just excellent!
This book was wonderfully delightful and a brilliant escape from reality, I loved every page and I guess you could say I experienced dazzlification ;-)
Highly recommended, read it and you won't be disappointed.

I loved The Hating Game and 99% mine, and now this! Sally Thorne just has a way of creating characters you instantly bond with and genuinely care about. This is a lovely story...one I’ll read again, like her other books.
Ruthie and Teddy are too cute. There is one thread of this story that I do with had had a slightly longer and more satisfying conclusion, but it didn’t stop me loving this book! Also loved the Parlonis!

Don’t think twice. Buy this book and start it early in the day otherwise you might not be able to put it down and you know how that goes. Sally is such a talented writer who manages to give her narrating characters such a unique, and authentic voice. With Ruthie she’s knocked it out of the park. I think I’m gonna need a tortoise tattoo.

A comforting, happy read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 April 2022Verified Purchase
I read The Hating Game last year and loved it so much it ended up in my top 10 reads of 2021. So, when I saw Second First Impressions as a new release by the same author I had to read it.
I’m a bit of a sucker for a romantic reality show - (think Love is Blind, Married at First Sight Australia 💖) and I’d say a warm, cosy rom com novel with a gentle, lighthearted storyline is definitely one of my guilty pleasures. Does this make me a hopeless romantic? Possibly…
This book follows a similar concept as The Hating Game - two seemingly mismatched singles thrown together in unusually high stakes circumstances. I devoured this novel on one cosy Sunday. Is it the best book I’ll read this year? No. Will I remember this book in a few weeks time? No… but that’s okay! It was comforting, happy little read and I’m more than happy to continue on this rom com journey.
