Dante had been courting his victim in cyberspace for weeks before meeting her in person. A few sips of wine and a few hours later, she was dead. The murder weapon: a rare, usually undetectable date-rape drug with a street value of a quarter million dollars. Detective Eve Dallas is playing and replaying the clues in her mind. The candlelight, the music, the rose petals strewn across the bed - a seduction meant for his benefit, not hers. He hadn't intended to kill her. But now that he has, he is left with only two choices: to either hole up in fear and guilt or start hunting again....

I am not normally a reader of romances or violent action. This entire series is utterly engaging, beautifully written, excellently edited, and as such, is, as Harlen Corben says

Not as good as others but still good. Not much else to say but needed 12 extra words. And now two more. Done.

Never a hardship to read this series.
Well written and plotted story that gives us the who and why right at the start, leaving you to tag along as Eve and the gang do their stuff to bring justice to those who think killing is a game.
I really disliked the whole reasoning of the why, but man playing god is nothing new. I just wished the whole corrupt company and its employees were taken down over the making and using of these drugs.
I always enjoy following along as Eve does her thing. Her thinking and reactions to situations either amuse me or have me wishing we had actual police officers as dedicated as she is.
We get some extremely fun and entertaining interactions between our main players.
Charles and Louise hit it off, leaving Peabody dealing with a very cantankerous McNab. These two finally become a couple, no matter Eve’s pleas to be left ignorant of what is happening.
Roarke plays a big part and even Summerset gets a chance at tormenting Eve when he has to treat her for being sick.
Mavis, Trina and Leonardo have their parts to play.
I have read all of these books twice already as I own most in paperback and have most of the kindle versions too.
I am rereading this series once more, updating and replacing missing reviews.

In Death book 13
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 March 2019Verified Purchase
It starts with two young men setting up a game where they earn points based on the outcome of their latest dates. It's bad enough that they're using date rape drugs to make their victims "willing" and compliant but when one of them accidentally crosses the line into murder the game takes a deadly new turn. It's up to Eve to track down these killers but if she doesn't work fast she's going to have to have more innocent victims on her hands.
It says a lot when you're thirteen books into a series and still loving every minute of it. I was really nervous starting the In Death books, it's pretty intimidating when you know that there are already upwards of 40 books published, but now I'm actually thrilled that I still have so many unread books ahead of me. I just can't seem to get enough of these characters! I love Eve, she's both tough as nails and deeply vulnerable and as she gradually seems to be remembering more about her past I have a feeling we're only beginning to touch on her childhood trauma. Roarke is fabulous too and definitely one of my favourite book boyfriends right now. He understands Eve in a way that few others do and he's been a constant source of support since they met, their relationship has had it's rocky moments but they're in a pretty good place right now and their bond just gets stronger with each book.
This is a series about death and murder so of course it has it's dark moments but there is also plenty of humour too thanks to characters like Peabody and McNab. Peabody is a brilliant aide to Eve but she's a bit dense when it comes to her personal relationships so it's been really interesting to see things with her and McNab go totally pear shaped. We do get some progress on that front in this book but they're both pretty stubborn and mule headed so who knows how long they'll be on speaking terms for this time. I guess I'll just have to dive straight into the next book to find out!

Unlucky for some 13!

The 13th book in the In Death series by J D Robb is a great, fast paced crime thriller like the preceding 12 books. I am totally hooked and am reading one after the other. This futuristic cop series is riveting and I just have to read the next one straight after I finish each one. As a huge fan of all Nora Roberts books why would I not love her alter-ego, J D Robb? She is the best author in the world, in my humble opinion and all her books can be read and re-read many times, as I have and will continue to do so.

As usual, we have another great and different issue to be resolved. I'm feeling I know so many characters now and what goes on in each of their lives. I am, for sure, hoping that someday Eve will plant a kiss on Summersets scrawny lips to cement the undoubted love that rumbles on between them. So, it's on to the next with continued anticipation.
