I read the original Stephen King short story back in the 70's. This version, while competent, is greatly expanded, and very obviously Hollywoodized, with clearly defined heroes and villains. The villains, of course, get their come-uppance either during the story or at the end of the movie. All very pat. And very unlike real life. And very unlike the original story, which had no such vibe. The changes no doubt pleased a lot of audiences, but I think it's weaker as a result.

It ended happily, however, the process to get to this point I don't think justified the foul language and depravity it took to get there. Great acting and very clever story line. Violence, foul language, despicable people (if you can call them people) was not uplifting even though the good guys win in the end. However, the good law abiding citizen who was innocently accused had to become a crook in prison to achieve the so called redemption.

Loads of reviews here that give justice to a film that many will have in their top all time best film listing as I do.

My copy is the 10th Anniversary, 3 disc Special Edition. Disc 1 has the film and with it an exemplary audio description track for the visually impaired. Indeed the box set has a sticker across it in braille. There are English subtitles for the hearing impaired. A commentary by Frank Darabont the director, plus biographies and memorable quotes.

Discs 2 & 3 are choc-a-bloc full of extras and bonus features that are a real treat in entertainment and information when you have a few hours to spare on a rainy day ---- I've watched some of it, not all, and I'm glad the producers were able to compile these extras before we lose some of those players from the film.
Years from now people will be scrambling to put together something like this to recognize the importance of the film. Thankfully it has been done, credit to the producers and crew for their foresight.

This version of the film is 136 minutes long and is a perfect example of the level of sophistication that a company / group can reach to bring a product to both the hearing and visually impaired. Well done.

C'est en 1994 que Frank Darabont écrit et réalise "The Shawshank Redemption" (Les évadés) inspiré d'une courte nouvelle de Stephen King.
Ce film, qui fût un échec commercial à sa sortie sur les écrans (titre imprononçable, film de prison, absence de stars au générique), a véritablement explosé lors de sa sortie en DVD.
Il faut dire que l'on assiste à la projection d'un véritable chef d'œuvre qui va bien au-delà d'un nouveau film sur le milieu carcéral américain. Les thèmes abordés sont avant tout l'amitié profonde qui va naître entre Andy et Red magistralement interprétés par Tim Robbins et Morgan Freeman, la corruption qui gangrène la direction des prisons, l'après sortie lorsqu'on a vécu 50 ans enfermé et la quasi impossibilité de se réinsérer dans la société et la possibilité de rédemption: il faut choisir de vivre ou de mourir.
Le scénario du film est excellent, à la virgule près, la violence se retrouve marginalisée par rapport aux relations humaines qui se nouent entre les différents prisonniers tous parfaitement interprétés notamment par le vétéran James Whitmore.
Un film qui vous marque à tout jamais et que l'on peut voir et revoir sans jamais se lasser.
Un des chefs d'œuvre du 7ème art.

Brilliant film but would have been more enjoyable if there were english subtitles available.
Probably copied (officially) from VHS tape onto DVD, (hence no subtitles), but did have two separate film formats, one each side of disc.
One side of the disc has Video Aspect Ratio 1: 4:3 , whereas the flip side of the disc has Video Aspect Ratio 16:9.
The film has a great story-line and recommend anyone to watch and enjoy.

PS: However I have now bought a second copy which does have english subtitles, and only one side playable this time..
Attention to DVD sales details listed to determine whether DVD has subtitles or not..
