Product description
Award-winning crime writer Ann Cleeves’ bestselling detective series returns for a sixth season as DI Jimmy Perez faces a compelling new single mystery.
A prominent Shetlander is shot dead on their doorstep in broad daylight. Perez returns from his mother’s funeral on Fair Isle to investigate. The victim had their fair share of enemies, not least those angry at their involvement in the compassionate release of Donna Killick, the murderer of Lizzie Kilmuir.
With tensions on the Islands rising and battling with his own grief, Perez must untangle a web of lies as secrets from the past, long buried, rise to the surface once more.

The weakest Shetland series to date. Unmodulated gloom, and not just from the Shetland weather this time around. Too many absurdities in the plot to forgive, a fairly derivative (out of Vera) central story line and three major subplots that drag. Some of the main players seem somewhat disengaged at times (lines occasionally delivered with the wrong emphasis or tone - should have been picked up immediately by the director for retakes), but the cast, as usual, is generally good. Disappointing to see the standards of this previously top-notch show slipping.

The cover clearly identified the DVD as season 6, but the DVD was for season 5.

Shetland continues to enthral
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 January 2022Verified Purchase
With ITV's Vera in permanent and possibly terminal decline from it's earlier high standards and The Long Call hardly setting the world alight it is a pleasure to be able to turn to the BBC's sixth Series of Shetland and get immersed in another investigation lead by the indomitable DI Jimmy Perez and his team. The only change to the Police structure is that Perez has a new Procurator Fiscal (played by Anneika Rose an actress new to this viewer) in charge of matters.
We begin with Perez attending the funeral of his late Mother which takes place on Fair Isle following which his Father who is suffering from early onset dementia comes to live with Perez and there is a general sense of loss and regret that pervades the whole Series affecting not only Perez who struggles with the loss of his Mother but also the others concerned with the crimes which are the subject of the investigations.
There are two main strands - the first of which concerns the shooting dead at his home of a local lawyer who's wife is a candidate running for re-election to the Local Authority and the cases the lawyer was handling which might have had a bearing on his death. Then there is the return to Shetland of a woman who had been convicted of murder of a young girl but who has been granted early parole due to her suffering from terminal cancer having been given only a short time left to live. This creates tension amongst not only the local populace but also within the Police team. We learn that the woman Donna Killick had had an earlier relationship with Mark Bonnar's character (another stand out performance from him following his sterling work in Guilt) and he becomes embroiled with her day to day care.
As is always the case with Shetland there are many twists and turns in the plots as the two strands are developed with suspicions of culpability in events both past and present which only add to the viewer's interest in seeing how matters play out. All the leads are portrayed to the standards we have come to expect (Douglas Henshall delivers another powerhouse performance as the troubled but always wholly credible Jimmy Perez) and even the peripheral characters have a lot to contribute which they do with gusto.
Eventually matters are brought to a conclusion due to dogged work by Perez and his team but we are left with a shattering finale which will lead us into Series 7. This was filmed at the same time as Series 6 so here's hoping that the BBC will not be keeping us waiting overlong before it is aired.

Fantastic show

I managed to track down the parcel 2 days later in a derelict house. I am disappointed with the Amazon delivery, the difficulty in reporting the error (Amazon had marked it as "Delivered through letterbox") and the response once I had finally made contact via a Amazon Chat (something would happen by 15 Dec but nothing did).
Criticism of Amazon aside (service is slipping), the Shetland series is Amazing and I expect to watch and rewatch it many times over. Long live DVDs and great drama!

Hard Going
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 January 2022Verified Purchase
I’ve always really liked this show , it’s a cut above most of the other cop shows . This latest one however is very hard going . The murder story almost seems to be the sub-plot , and it’s the trials and tribulations of the main characters that take all the attention. The trouble is , every single character is in crisis , and in the depths of despair . Its all too bleak , too miserable , too unpleasant , and too much . I have bought all of the Shetland series DVD’s ‘ blind ‘ , as I am unable to watch at time of transmission . But I’ll be wary of purchasing the next series unless I hear things have warmed up a bit !

Full of intrigue, suspense and a shocking cliffhanger ending
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 February 2022Verified Purchase
Another brilliant series, with a masterful performance from Douglas Henshall, ably supported by Mark Bonnar, and the superb scenery of the windswept, bleak but awesome islands. Subtitles are available, although I am used to the wonderful accents of the characters. As always, the plot becomes more and more confusing and convoluted, but good direction and excellent script keep the viewer enthralled. This time the problem of dementia was handled with tact and subtlety. The music is not intrusive, but adds to the gloomy atmosphere and death toll. It is a pity that there are no extras on any of the DVDs as far as I can recall. The ending is amazing, and surely there HAS to be series seven?

Eagerly awaited for Xmas, this does not disappoint. Adding to my series collection, the cast is still great in this scottish drama. Without spoiling it for you all, the ending is a shock!
So buy it and enjoy as I have. Recommended for ITV Drama - sometimes they get it right.
