The damage family secrets do is huge at the best of times but when you add in a malevolent mother, a father all for the quiet life, a sister who will do anything to protect herself, and a crazed best friend the scene is set for more twists and turns than ever. This book also reminds one to avoid small villages and small minds. This book will keep you guessing from start to finish.

Two little girls are being held by the police, accused of an horrendous crime. All evidence points to their guilt. I just had to keep reading to find out "who dunnit"
Then a major twist I didn't see coming leads to a terrific ending.

Also a disturbing glimpse into what happens when children commit horrific crimes & how communities react & turn on people (although I feel that the instant, overwhelming condemnation seems a bit extreme & unrealistic, as surely, the fact that they are young children & it's such a physical crime should lead to questions, but then with social & mass media, people are quick to weigh in these days). With lots of twists & turns, this is an engaging story & the way the pieces come together will surprise you.

I thought this was a great read. The basic setup reminded me somewhat of the first season of the TV series "Broadchurch" (high praise from me as I loved that first season) but it took me in unexpected directions soon enough.

Worth checking out, and in my opinion not unsuitable for older teen readers.

I found this a compelling read. Interesting plot. Lots of red heerings. Didn't see the twist at the end coming. The only negative thing I have to say was the grandparents ages didn't seem to add up. The fact that the murdered womans husband supposedly went to school with Juliets dad was mentioned a few times. The woman was 81. Juliets mother was only 60. Juliets brother was 21. There was no mention that her father was 20 years older and I would have thought if that were true it would have warranted a mention given the grandparents weird dynamic and the dysfunctional family relationship. I just found it annoying and wondered if it was simply a mistake that wasn't picked up by the books editor.

Wow how bad is this editor ? For example the interview finished at 3.15 then it was 2.30???? many many mistakes. It was a mediocre story that would have been enjoyable had there not been so many errors. I ended up looking for 'spot the error' more than reading the storyline.

A slightly unusual subject matter, therefore I was expecting to be intrigued and entertained. However, the story never really developed after the first few chapters. I felt like it was going round and round in circles just describing mundane interviews and dropping in a few hints that all was not well before the incident with the two girls. The back story, when it eventually reached it's conclusion, was ridiculous to say the least, with an entire family colluding in hiding the truth and misdirecting blame for no apparent reason. As for the confession by the old lady's murderer at the end of the book, well it was akin to a villain willingly (and very conveniently) confessing to a crime in Scooby Doo.

2 sisters run a business but things are not as they seem. When their 10 year old girls are both arrested for assault and then murder of an elderly lady, their worlds start to fall apart. Is all as it seems, are these girls capable of murder? Why won’t either of them speak to their parents or the police? What is going on between the 2 sisters and their parents, so much built up tension between them all, surely that also affects the 2 cousins.
This book turns what you believe and expect on its head. It was interesting how a little village can turn against long term residents, even without all the facts. Great characters throughout the story and so many secrets in one family. A brilliant storyline, I highly recommended this book.

I was really gripped by this story of two ten year old girls, Maddy and Brianna, who are accused of murder, and the family dynamics are intriguing, and I couldn’t put it down. But I found the ending rather rushed and not very credible, which spoilt it rather for me. Some slight editing issues too - Lizzie leaves Dana suddenly at the end of an evening together, and Dana is left thinking it’s all over, and the next morning they are breakfasting together, and you are left confused as to when they made up! And the timing issues don’t come over as very credible either. The whole story takes place in just over 24 hours in the police station, but the main characters seem to have time to go off and check work, and meet people, and it leaves you a bit breathless! Having said that, I still enjoyed most of it.

I finished this book last night in bed. I have read everyone of Kim's books and thoroughly enjoyed every single one but I think this one is the best yet. This story draws you in from page one with wonderful yet complex characters and the story moves at a good pace. Did these two ten year old girls really attack this old lady? They're not speaking and the lady bought in to try and encourage them to do so thinks that there's more to the entire family than on the surface. This book weaves in and out of the different characters lives, the two little girls, their mothers who are sisters and their parents. After the girls are bought in for questioning on the attack other things in Juliet's life start to crash down around her, why is this happening? Who is responsible for everything going wrong, is it due to the public outcry against the family or is someone else involved? This story will lead you a merry and very fun dance to it's explosive conclusion where several truths will come out.
Kim Slater is a force to be reckoned with in the literary world and I cannot wait for her next book!!
