I think this particular series is hit and miss. But that might be due to the fact It is different to previous series, shorter and a connected narrative. This was also a fan-serving series as it brings back Sam Ryan. Though I would have loved to have seen the return of Harry’s character. Though I wonder if this isn’t sign that the series is slow declining????? But I enjoyed it otherwise. Of course there are differences between Sam and Nikki. Sams character had more a backstory. While for some reason Nikki character always seemed to be more focused on her personal life. And that whole will they won’t we trope. First with Harry then with Jack. Anyways I digress; if your a fan of silent witness you will more likely enjoy this. If first time watching I would probably watch earlier series first; and make a judgement from there.

British scripts are so weak and weedy and when you compare this usually enjoyable programme with the better American shows you can really see what I mean. Based on a ludicrous premise this series rambles on and includes what it feel are human interest elements in the most clunky badly written ways. The story lines are trite, obvious and full of ghastly elements that just fail to deliver. This is not the cast’s fault (though a few actors need more directorial help!) but the production company that simply cannot handle social or multi-cultural concerns in a mature, sophisticated or compelling way. It’s simply amateur time and so typical of much of the BBC’s present day drama output. They must bring back better writers and producers before they lose their audience entirely. The central storyline was good but the sub-plots about the family life of two characters were truly appalling!

I've loved this series for a long time. It really makes most of the dreck from U.S. networks look truly awful. I don't usually "ship" characters, but I'm glad Nikki has finally realized that Jack loves her. It was obvious to me a very long time ago, but she didn't seem to get it and he was too shy to tell her. (Also, she kept falling for the wrong guys instead.)

One quibble: Is PAL in the U.K. something different than the usual? I fail to understand why I can watch PAL DVDs from Israel and Turkey on my TV without a problem -- but PAL disks from the U.K. won't play on my usual player, so I have to watch them on my computer, which isn't the same experience. Too bad about that.....
