Sole Survivor is one of those films I remember from my childhood where it remained one of those films you brought up in discussions starting with 'do you remember the film where...'! In fact it is hard to talk too much about the film without giving away the plot so for those of you who have reached this page and remember the film I will concentrate on the Blu Ray to help with prospective purchases. If you have arrived here by chance, perhaps through a William Shatner search, then this is a classic 70's b-movie with a twist and well worth a viewing or two. Certainly one of my favs from the 70's
I loved this film so much I have spent an odd hour or so over the internet years of hunting down a copy but it seems this title has had all sorts of issues over the years. Some relate to which studio actually owned the distribution rights through to some very poor DVD's that were released for sale which I obtained and turned out to be nothing more than a poor VHS copy to a DVD. Now though we at last have the chance to view this via a DVD or, as I review here, a Blu Ray and it was a day-1 purchase for me. Released by a small, fairly new, UK company called Mediumrare Entertainment the film arrives in a dual DVD/Blu Ray set.
In terms of picture quality you shouldn't expect a leading-edge quality release with Lossless surround sound, extras, widescreen and more - what you have here is a bare-bones basic release with an 1.33:1 image (as in non-widescreen format like TV used to be) with a PCM stereo soundtrack, a few chapters and some stills and that's it. In fact the stills are absolutely useless - just a few screen grabs collated to a 2-minute video. This said I didn't expect much - it just seems incredible that someone has found a decent'ish looking transfer for release so I was thankful for this. Image quality is generally good but there are dust marks, sparklies and so on throughout but don't let this put you off - it is a million miles from anything I have ever seen before and very watchable. The colour is good and the detail in the shots is very good. I have been trying to post a screenshot showing a dust mark (or three) which is actually larger than the plane also in shot but it seems this is being rejected each time I try to post.
The release has only just made use of the extra disc space for a Blu Ray with film itself coming in at just 16.6Gb which is the lowest I have seen for any film but again, I am largely happy just to have the title released in HD but can't help but wonder why the distributor didn't use more of the available space even if this was to bump the data transfer rate.
I suspect that there are no available extras out there so the omission is understandable. Would have been nice though to learn something from the distributor about the release such as the source and what, if any, clean and restoration took place and so on but, sadly this has not been done. I have given 4-stars rather than the 5 as does feel as this is too much a bare-bones release for what is a premium price point but it was a close call.
Overall, I recommend this highly - it is by far the best quality you can presently see this movie.

Classic World War Two Movie From 1970 TV Veterans William Shatner & Richard Basehart Head Up An Excellent Cast. As The story centers around The finding of a crashed plane Decades later after The war. originally on board The plane Richard Basehart struggles To prove is innocence That he Did not bail out leaving His crew To Die. what makes Sole Survivor an exceptional movie is That The whole movie is played out with Baseharts crew now stranded in The Desert as Ghosts. Enter William Shatner with Basehart as a crash investigator investigating The crash of course They can't see The Ghosts of The past clearly shades of Twilight Zone Here. In fact The classic Twilight Zone episode King Nine Will Not Return bears a strong resemblance To Sole Survivor. Look out for Pat Wayne playing The leader of The Ghostly crew The whole movie is an who's who of well known TV faces. Sole Survivor comes complete with an excellent Blu ray Transfer a photo Gallery is all in The form of extras The package features a DVD of The movie along with your Blu ray Excellent value for your money. Not really an action flick But if you like The Twilight Zone and The Movie Flight Of The Phoenix soon To Get The Blu ray Treatment you Will Enjoy This.

A superior Ghost Story.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 March 2016Verified Purchase
I first saw this on BBC1 30 years ago and it's stuck in my mind ever since. Having just watched the blu-ray, it's every bit as good as i remember. Easily one of the best ghost stories I've ever viewed. Was very very surprised to hear a stereo soundtrack. The picture is excellent. It's not had a full restoration but clearly a clean print was used and for the most part the charity and sharpness of the picture is a joy to behold. The only downside?. No subtitles on the blu-ray.
But having waited like the ghosts in this classic a lot longer than 17 years, I was so glad to finally get my hands on this gem for what I think was the first TV movie in America.

A timeless classic!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 May 2016Verified Purchase
For those who remeber this film, it is a timeless classic. It is based around a crew of five who were lost on their mission and then over shot their base on the return journey due to navigation errors. One of the crew manages to bail out and it is later on whe the aircraft is discovered by a crash investigation team that the true story comes to light and the guy who bailed out is now a general under the spotlight. I do not want to give it away as this is a must see for anyone who has not watched this film before.
I have been after this film for years and it is good to see it being reproduced so that it can be enjoyed. Well worth a watch although not to everyone's taste!
Prompt delivery and well packaged.

Haunting and Interesting not you're average TV Movie
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 April 2017Verified Purchase
An unusual supernatural ghost story, this is an early 70's made for American TV movie filmed in Death Valley but based on the true story of the 50's Bomber found in the Libyan Desert by an oil prospecting company in 1960.
Starring a post Star Trek William Shatner in a major but fairly low key role and Richard Basehart as the Cowardly captain of the ill-fated mission hiding a terrible secret, this is an intelligent script with a minimum of special effects and Blu-Ray extras but extremely high quality and interesting nonetheless.
If you've seen the Twilight Zone Episode King Nine Will Not Return you will understand part of the source material for this movie immediately.
An unreserved five star movie, superb.
