3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing but Convenient
Reviewed in the United States on 18 July 2019
If you are looking for the convenience of owning the entirety of this series in one purchase, then this is your best and only option. That said, this is a rather lackluster Blu-Ray disk compilation that only really seems to utilize the format to cram the entire series on two disks.

By the SD on Blu-Ray label, I expected something along the lines of simply maintaining the original aspect ratio. Unfortunately, that is not the case. I compared the image to that of two of the few Sonic X DVDs I own, those being DVDouble Shot Chaos Emerald Chaos and Sonic's Scream Test. The image is somewhat clearer on static shots than that of the DVD's, likely due to a better bitrate. However, this image quality boost is very negligible and required me to take screenshots of like-frames to even see it. This much was expected and I'd rather see them maintain the original aspect ratio than superficially "enhance" image quality or stretch the image, though some slight sharpening might be appreciated.

The biggest issue is that, for whatever reason, every video on these disks is interlaced! Yep, that's right, this is 480i, not 480p! This causes all sorts of artifacting to anything in motion, with or without de-interlacing on. It's really bad and rather disappointing to see. Heck, I compared a scene with lots of motion from the Blu-Ray to one of the DVDs with de-interlacing disabled and, for whatever reason, the DVD seemed much clearer.

All that aside, there's the already known fact that this lacks the Japanese audio/un-cut versions. Yes, this is still the overly-censored 4Kids edit, complete with real guns making toy laser noises and signs with text turned into blobs. At the very least, it would have been cool if they had included the European intro.

So, yeah, if you want this whole series without having to deal with buying, storing, and swapping a bunch of DVDs in and out of your player then get this. If you wanted a moderate to great image quality boost (akin to the Batman Animated Series, Avatar The Last Airbender, or The New Scooby Doo Movies Blu-rays) and/or a ton of extras/un-cut episodes, then this will be a disappointing product.

About the comparison pics: My PC Blu-Ray player doesn't open a single episode as just that, but rather opens the entire contents of disks as one continuous video. This makes using the frame timeline useless in getting a like for like shot, so frames are likely not exact matches. The comparison of the intro sequence (the one of Sonic running past a grey car) is using the DVDoubleshot Chaos Emeral Chaos DVD (the worst quality-wise) with de-interlacing turned on; the other two comparison shots use the Sonic's Scream Test DVD with all de-interlacing turned off.

Side Note: My copy came in with slight damage to the case. It's not cracked, but it is indented along the top-mid and the spine. It looks like it was crushed by something slightly. I'm more disappointed that this has damaged the cover and box artwork than the damage to the plane Blu-ray case. This did not effect my review, but it is unfortunate.

Update: Was able to replace my damaged copy through Amazon. The new copy is free of defects, so that's good.
