This fourth season is extremely intense as tensions rise and situations threaten to come to a head. The show is dramatically compelling and enthralling. Very few dramatic series can even compare to The Sopranos where it entertains on all levels, from gripping drama to dead pan humorous moments. Combining the continued elements of extraordinary writing, superior direction and exceptional acting all make this fourth season another resounding success in the Sopranos series.
Seemingly every episode ended with an uncomfortable shot of Tony and Carmela alone together, but still apart: In bed with Carmela facing away, in the kitchen with Tony leaning on the couch, in the bathroom with Carmela in the tub. The tension in their marriage cannot be repressed any longer and their marriage begins to crumble. Some viewers were disappointed at the focus on Tony's family taking away from the gangster scenes; I really think these people missed the point and fail to acknowledge the depth of the show. I don't get that view because I think they're missing what the Sopranos is all about, plus it gives the series such diversity if each season is different. I love the gangster setting too but I don't want every season to repeat a formula, contrary to what some people say The Sopranos is not Goodfella's the series, don't sell it short, don't miss the point. This is serious drama, a show with great depth and diversity, it is multi-layered and the gangster theme is but one element (albeit one of the most prominent and important). Season four has some incredible scenes involving Tony and Carmela, some of my favourite parts of the whole series.
The series continues to evolve and it never fails to create amazing moments, bringing everything together at the right time. Script, acting and perfectly chosen music and timing combine to create classic scenes that are unmatched by any other television show. Season four is erratic, there are sprawling plot lines and the show demands a lot from the viewer. It isn't always neat, tidy and not everything is tied up and wrapped in a bow for us, that isn't how life works, that isn't how the Sopranos works. Revel in it because this is sublime television.

Tony Soprano is a womanising, double-crossing, murderous thug with a filthy tongue and a filthier temper. I LIKE HIM. He is so well-written and well-acted, a complex man who does not understand his own motivations and is seemingly blind to the consequences of his actions. Compared to other characters, especially the odious Ralphie, Tony is a good baddie. I am not alone in liking this guy....his lady psychiatrist also clearly likes HIM while deploring his activities.
Yes, this a pretty violent series, but when you think of all the bodies that lie lifeless on the stage at the end of many of Shakespeare's plays, you must acknowledge that a character -driven plot can literally get away with murder.
Series five is winging its way to my house as I type. I have been ultra careful to steer clear of spoilers so I have no idea what happens in series five and six. I am lucky to have them to look forward too, and when I get to the end, the plan is to re-watch the whole lot right from the beginning.

The growing soap opera

The Sopranos series two was probably the best series of any television series. Those standards were only briefly maintained for parts of the third series. Series four is a marginal improvement on series three, but both of these weaker series are elevated briefly by the black comedy episode. In series three there was "Pine Barrens" the best episode of the entire series. In series four "Whoever Did This" is the best episode, although it is not perfect and becomes too slow, almost real time.
It is still a very good series, leaving the viewer with plenty to talk about to other viewers. Overall I prefer the batch of episodes to the third series, even though it feels like the programme lost its way some time back and whilst I enjoy it, I am disappointed that the quality of the second series is never met for more than one episode.
