A love story intertwined with lifestyle in New Orleans

Ruby, an Aussie, following the death of her maternal Grandmother who had reared her, decided to visit New Orleans. Ruby found a letter from her Paternal Grandmother and following corresponding with her was invited to stay with her when she arrived in new Orleans. Ruby found herself totally immersed in the lifestyle of New Orleans and thrived on it. Of course, she met a lover. Many of the locals ignored the warnings that a massive hurricane, Katrina, was predicted to make landfall at New Orleans. Ruby remained there as when their decision to leave was all to late. They survived but many, many others didn't as the flood waters surged through the city. Belinda Alexander has given readers an amazing description of the horrific effects of Katrina's onslaught and destruction of New Orleans.

I always am disappointed when a new Belinda Alexandra book comes out. Disappointing because there never seems to be enough hours in the day. Her books are the type that I will stay up at night when I know I should be sleeping. That to start 5 minutes or reading easily slips into hours and to get to the end is disappointing because the journey is ended. Yet every time I read her books I love the fact I'm not just meeting a character but learning more about a time and place in history I did not know and knowing it and our human struggles makes me a better person. So thank you Belinda Alexandra and all that helped you in creating this book.

The family history and development of the characters was good. Belinda Alexandra has the ability to bring characters to life and the reader is soon engaged and wanting to find out how they are all linked. Her research of Jazz history makes for interesting reading, and the inclusion of the South's attitude to slaves, coloureds and social integration is an added dimension to the story.
I did however, become very frustrated with the end. It seemed that the floods just swept away all need to complete the story. Perhaps the publishing deadline was fast approaching and the story just had to be finished ..... whatever, the last few chapters were very disappointing.
I din't think it was a patch on her previous books.

Something in the story didn't quite gel for me. It kept me interested, but it felt somehow incredible.
