Excellent programme - the one star is for this DVD release only! The only subtitle option on this French language programme turns out to be English for people with a hearing impairment. The very first subtitle on episode 1 is a sound effect. These subtitles are certainly essential for those with seriously impaired hearing (I have a slight hearing problem and use a hearing aid myself) but why is there no subtitle stream with english dialogue only as with the previous 6 series on DVD? If someone who actually has a clue what they're doing subtitle-wise would care to re-issue this superb French series with dialogue-only subtitles as well then I'll buy another copy as I already have Seasons 1-6, but in the meantime I'll be sending this back as it is very irritating to watch.
If anyone knows that I'm mistaken and has managed to access dialogue-only subtitles then please comment and tell me how to access them. As I wrote earlier, I'll very happily buy another copy!

"Going Offside" is what they do

Regular viewers of Spiral know exactly what to expect from the flawed cops who make up the Crime Squad in Paris and Series 7 doesn't disappoint.
At the start we see Laure still trying to recover from a breakdown whilst the Squad is being headed by Gilou with varying degrees of success. Josephine Karlsson is being held in prison on remand accused of attempting to kill her rapist by running him down with her car and Examining Magistrate Roban is rapidly approaching an enforced retirement. Then the Squad's former head is murdered in the course of an armed robbery at a Chinese restaurant suspected of being part of a money-laundering operation and this draws Laure back to rejoin the Squad despite reservations as to her ability to function at the level required.
How the murder investigation is pursued and it's ramifications for not only individual members of the Squad but also Roban and Karlsson form the substance of the plot. There are the usual missteps and wrong conclusions that we have grown used to over the years but the storylines remain compelling throughout - a tribute not only to the scriptwriters but also the sympathetic performances given by all the lead actors backed up by the support characters. Even TinTin returns having now been appointed to the French equivalent of the Internal Affairs Dept to play a significant role.
Without giving away any details I would just say that the Series ends with Laure Gilou Roban and Josephine at a crossroads whether personal or professional or both and that would have been quite enough to bring the whole enterprise to a satisfactory conclusion. However I gather that Series 8 is already under way so it will be interesting to see how the characters progress in future - let's just hope it's not too long before we get to see see them back in action.

The finale to an outstanding series.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 January 2020Verified Purchase
Even the loss of my favourite character, Tin Tin - yes, he does appear in a sadly debilitated role - cannot overcome a fine ending to this quite magnificent series. The directing is supported by a marvellous cast, amongst whom some six or seven are consistently powerful in their performances. Caroline Proust is superb, as is Audrey Fleurot but given that, it is difficult not to say that those who play the key roles of Escofffier, Tin Tin, Edelman. Judge Roban and at least two or three others stand up well by comparison. There is scarcely a weak character to be seen and some quite stunning performances. I'm not sure whether it was a quirk of my subtitles, or that they were set wrongly, that constant interruptions of door creaks/coughs/sighs etc punctuated the dialogue in the most annoying way. This problem never reared its head in the first 6 series. I shall very much miss this unique series. Indeed, I shall certainly return to it in the future.

Beware! Subtitles are off sync beginning with episode 2
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 December 2019Verified Purchase
Damn! Waited a year for this, episode 1 great, episode 2 the subtitles are off sync, cant follow dialogue properly, unable to determine which character is speaking and I admit the delayed sounds are a bit of a laugh. You might want to delay purchase until they fix this issue, unless you speak French then there is no problem. Update, episode 2 and 6 are off sync, the other episodes are perfect. I only purchase Amazon UK dvds and have a regions free DVD. No others have had the same issue whether UK, Chinese (Huge Asian Drama Fan) or otherwise, and for the record despite the false info I affirm that i have never had previous issues or reported any issues other than this season 7, all others have been perfect.

"Spiral" 7 as good as its' predecessors
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 November 2019Verified Purchase
If you liked series 1-6 you'll love this the latest series. The usual intertwining plots & flawed central characters excellently played by Caroline Proust, Audrey Fleurot et al. The good news is that a series 8 has been filmed (Instagram Engrenages 8 gives pics of actors on set) but obviously will not be around for some time
