I have read pretty much all of Cathy Kelly's books. While they don't pretend to be great literature, up until now you could expect a reasonably well-written, easy to read book with likeable characters.
This latest book is terrible. I am about one-fifth of the way through and debating whether to waste my time continuing. If I do it will only be because of the $15 it cost me to buy on Kindle.
The prose is amateurish, unbelievable and clunky. The story veers wildly from character to character and possibly because of the Kindle format, this can happen from one paragraph to the next so it becomes totally confusing which character is talking. None of the characters are evoking sympathy in me . Like a previous reviewer I am deeply suspicious that the author was under contract to produce a book and cobbled
This load of trite drivel together. I am so disappointed as I know she can write so much better. $15 down the drain.

Another delightful offering from Cathy Kelly. We meet her characters as they gather around us to tell their stories. When we turn the last page and part the magic lives on long after we say farewell.

Pure genius!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 November 2014Verified Purchase
Cathy Kelly has always written excellent books. From her early typical chick lit novels mainly about single women to later years' stories about grown women and family life. I knew she was good, but not this good!! "It Started With Paris" is pure genius. Storytelling at its very best. Interesting, entertaining, fabulous characterization, wise, warm, honest and so very cleverly woven together.
Some reviews are critical to the many characters introduced in the beginning of the book. No problem for me. Each person's story could stand on its own feet and later on be easily drawn into the main story.
I'll not go into the story itself. Only conclude that in my view it's the most perfect and fulfilling book about love, friendship, family - about life in all its facets. 500 pages to race through, going far too fast, keeping me awake late into the night. Entertaining and wise at the same time. How alike we all are. How I could see much of my own life in all this. The wonderful, yet complicated and fragile life we spend on this earth.
I'm full of awe and admiration for Cathy Kelly. She keeps getting better and better and is in my opinion Ireland's and one of the world's best female writers of today.

Loved this book

Loved this book! I love a fast paced passionate, edgy, sexy, love romance, equally a quiet tale of quiet cupcake making, the latter of which appear to be the rage? But Cathy Kelly, and I've always been a fan, totally made these characters come to life. Fantastic layers of gererations. Love Leila, headstrong, ambitious, getting trialled in her mad professional life, with her ageing mum, her sis, an initially tricky little dog. Her life in a challenging workplace, challenges from her boss. Birdie vs Howard? Tynan - we all know him. Beautifully told, just the right ending

Disappointed....& just bored to death really
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 September 2017Verified Purchase
Read several of Cathy Kelly's in the past - seem to remember them being ok....but this one is a real struggle . Really struggled to care about ANY of the (seemingy endless) list of 2-dimensional characters she chucks at you in the opening 1/4 of the book...& quite frankly, I was just bored by it all.
I often read to get to sleep...this one certainly did the trick there - nodded off within 10mins of starting to plough thru it every night...3 stars for that.

Heartwarming story

This is the first book I have read from this author and I was impressed. I love books by Maeve Binchy and Cathy writes in a similar way. The book was a lovely story that held me from beginning to end and I was sorry when I’d finished it. It meanders between characters and takes a little getting used to but I’ll definitely read more from this author.

A feel good book

I really enjoyed this book, it begins in the Eiffel Tower and ends with a reminisce by 2 different people of the Eiffel Tower. The story just flowed, lots of charterers, I got a bit mixed up but by the time I'd finished the sentence I knew exactly who it was.
The book told the stories of the young and the older generation. Love, marriage, good divorce and bad divorce. This book has it all, I was sorry when it ended.
