Product description
Double set of mockumentary comedy series created and performed by Australian comedian Chris Lilley. 'Summer Heights High' (2007) parodies high-school life through the three main characters (all played by Lilley): camp 'Director of Performing Arts' Mr G, who dreams of attaining artistic heights; private school exchange student Ja'mie King, who's forced to slum it in the backwaters; and hard-as-nails Tongan student Jonah Takalua, who's trying to avoid being expelled. Contains all eight episodes from Series 1. 'We Can Be Heroes' (2005) is a satirical look at the search for the 'Australian of the Year', with the five contenders all played by Lilley. Contains all six episodes.

Hilarious and original Aussie comedy

I saw Summer Heights High when it was first shown on BBC3 and after watching the very first episode I was hooked. In my opinion, this is Chris Lilley's best work, even better than his more recent shows (even the brilliant Angry Boys).
Summer Heights High is a mockumentary about life in a typical Australian high school, focusing on 3 main characters all played by Chris Lilley. The three core characters are fantastic and believably portrayed. The spoilt private school girl Ja'mie King makes a return from We Can Be Heroes, and two new characters are introduced - Mr G, a camp if slightly deluded drama teacher with dreams of starring in hit musicals, and Jonah Takalua, a breakdancing student from Tonga who has a tendency to get into trouble with the teachers, as well as his dad. The characters are hugely likeable in their own unique way, and it is hard to believe that they are all played by the same person.
Chris Lilley is fantastic and his writing is superb throughout. There are loads of quotable lines as well as some genuinely touching moments. Summer Heights High is the sort of comedy you can watch over and over again and it will still make you laugh. A must buy for fans of Chris Lilley and anyone looking for a brilliant and hilarious original comedy.

Fantastic - please please make more!!!

We caught most of an episode of this by accident when channel hopping in summer 2008 when BBC3 showed it without promotion in a late night graveyard slot in the summer - SHAME on them, as it so much better than all of the dross comedy they have recently produced. My older kids and me thought it was hilarious and so I got this DVD when it came out so we could watch the entire series.
Chris Lilley the star of the show also created, writes and produces the show. It is a mock documentary supposedly shot over a term in an Australian high school. A real high school is used for the shoot with lots of child extras and some older actors posing as kids, along with some down syndrome and disabled students. Most of the teachers including the wonderful Prinicipal Mrs Murray are played by real teachers. Chris Lilley plays the parts of all 3 characters that the show homes in on. A private school exchange student, the monstrous year 11 girl student Ja'mie King who thinks she is so "hot", the self-obsessed MrG the drama teacher and finally Jonah Takkalullah a year 8 ADHD troublemaker Polynesian break dancing boy who has been expelled from numerous schools.
Ja'mie tries to make her mark on the school by dating younger boys and organising a formal while getting in with the hot girls. Mr G tries to monopolise the gym and the main part ,in his self titled and self penned musical about a girl student who dies from ectasy and the wonderful teacher - Mr G who tried to save her and Jonah creates mayhem in class and drives a teacher to the edge of her sanity with his antics. I can't really describe all that happens or just how funny and beautifully observed it is and how well it builds through each episode to the wonderful final episode. Lilleys comedy works on many levels - in some parts it is quite broad and cartoonish and in others very delicate. In the last episode one of my daughters cried (I also nearly did) in part of the Jonah story and then laughed uproarishly as he had his revenge.
I would urge you to give this a try - it really is great. We often watch the episodes again and still love them. It was extremely popular in Australia and won many awards and also garnered a lot of complaints and controversey over comments made by charcters about asians and treatment of special needs children.Lots of you tube clips are of Aussie fans having summer heights themed nights and I for one would love to see a second series or be able to go see a real version of Mr G the musical. If you are not sure you'd enjoy it check out clips on the web.Jonah swears a lot so its not suitable for young kids.
We loved it so much we bought his previous series to this - We can be heroes which also features the monstrous Ja'mie. This series deserves much more success in the UK - its such a shame that having bought it the BBC buried it.

Well Packaged and Brilliantly Funny.

Reviewing films is very subjective, but in my opinion Summer Heights High is a very very funny comedy. It pushes the boundaries and some of the jokes are quite risky, but it pays off. We Can Be Heroes tries to take things a step further by being a bit wacky, but it doesn't quite capture my imagination like SHH does. I will let you read the plots elsewhere, but if you are buying it as a present and want to be assured its a well packaged purchase, then buy with confidence!

Genius!

I am from the UK, and came across Angry Boys first, and ended up working my way backwards to Summer Heights High and then to We Can Be Heroes. Instantly, Chris Lilley's rather satirical works are up at my top favourite comedy series (from the UK: Alan Partridge, Peep Show, Black Books, Spaced, etc) which I could watch again and again.. especially when chilling with my friends with some smokes.
Chris Lilley is a pure genius; he plays all of the main characters in his works. Despite this, you always end up seeing them as entirely different people with different mannerisms, facial expressions, and very believable 3d personalities. Even Daniel and Nathan, who are supposed to be identical twins, are very noticeably different. Chris Lilley's ability to pay attention to details in his acting, and portrayal of his characters, is amazing.
I feel the need to seek out some more comedy series and mockumentaries from Australia, but I fear that the bar has been set and I might be disappointed!
