I believe Tennison was written as a prequel to Prime Suspect. In Prime Suspect DCI Tennison was a fairly heavy smoker but apparently as a probationer WPC she was a non-smoker, I'd be curious to know when she acquired the habit. Too many brands thrown in like chick lit, and packing for word length. Jimi Hendrix got name checked what felt like about 900 times for no particular reason and it just grated. (and I write as someone who has more JH material than can be considered healthy). I find it a bit difficult to believe that someone with her back story would have had much time for Janis Joplin. Did we really need to know she has a 34DD figure? And so on.

I was pleased to be swept straight into probationer Jane's world in a well crafted novel where seemingly insignificant details can turn out to be important in the two crimes which are investigated. If you like police procedurals which really do concentrate on the police's efforts to solve a crime, this is one to consider. The reader does get to spend some time with Jane's family and there is some romance, but not at the expense of the investigation. In general, the characterisation is not very deep, though Jane herself does grow in confidence as the investigations proceeds, but the police's lines of enquiry provide plenty of interest and tension.
There are a few anachronisms such the bottle of water which Jane requests to go with her (entirely credible) cheese sandwich or the mention of a fish and chip shop being open on a Sunday, which while not helping to make me feel I had returned to 1973, did not mar a well-paced and cleverly constructed plot.
The separate account, as a sort of appendix, of how Jane chose a career in the police force is an thoughtful addition, which gives the reader a little extra insight into her character.
Overall, I fear the book just drops short of 5 stars, but on a more detailed scale would make 4.5 stars. On the strength of this, I have already purchased the next book in the series.
