Terciel and Elinor is the sixth book in the Old Kingdom series but as it’s a prequel to the original trilogy, you don’t need to have read any of the other books to read this one. I’ve only read the original trilogy and it’s so lovely to be back in the world and to learn more about Sabriel’s parents! I do think that if you’ve read the original trilogy you’ll really enjoy this one, even if you didn’t enjoy Clariel and Goldenhand as much.

Elinor was such a lovely character and I am so glad I was able to get to know her in this story! She was funny, sweet and sassy and perfectly complemented Terciel.

As Elinor knows very little about the ways of the Old Kingdom and Terciel is the new Abhorsen-in-waiting, this book is a perfect introduction to the series if you’ve never read it. I would recommend it as a starting point before Sabriel!

Garth Nix is brings the perfect mix of clever, funny and true love to his writing that always manages to pull at my heart strings. I will continue to read everything he writes for as long as he graces us with his words.

This book is a very satisfying read. I could not put it down. I loved the gentle romance between Terciel and Elinor and the unsensational way in which it was described. I also loved the strong female characters, Nix writes them so well. What struck me most though was the sense of menace in some parts (supplier alert). The child Terciel's encounter with Moregrim/Mogget and Elinor's walk through the fog with the chain are unsettling. The prize for the most disturbing section has to go to the description of the allegedly ill Mrs Hallett when Elinor visits her to ask for money. That incident made an unwelcome return to my mind in the wee small hours.

At the end of "Terciel and Elinor" I was left with a sense of sadness (more spoilers). Having read "Sabriel" I knew Elinor was not going to live a long life, but her vision at the end of the story and her characteristic reaction to it were most poignant. This is a beautiful novel.

As ever, another brilliant book by a very talented author. Garth Nix could write “a history of soap making in the old kingdom” and I would read it, so starved am I for all things Abhorsen. Some lovely nods to the rest of the series and plenty of new tidbits. A great book!

If you have read all of the rest of Nix’s Old Kingdom books, this one is a must. It tells the story of how Sabriel’s parents met. There will also be many familiar faces from the other books who make an appearance or are mentioned by name…

Nix’s writing is as good as ever here, building characters with depth and delivering great dialogue with the usual sprinkles of humour.
Don’t expect Terciel and Elinor to break any new ground though- the plot is somewhat predictable here, but if you’re into bells (Saraneth, Rana l, Kibeth etc) then the bells will be ringing for you!

This is the prequel to Sabriel, introducing us to her mother, another stubborn, determined fighting woman - Garth Nix does them very well, sometimes annoying, always believable. It charts the story of her discovery of her strong Clayr heritage in terrifying battles with unknown and inimical creatures, and the loss of everyone and everything she has known until late teens.
There are periods of calm, reflective learning for her, but mostly it's a roller coaster rite of passage story, with a little romance to sweeten it.

I love the old kingdom books (especially Lirael and Goldenhand) and was so disappointed with this one. It was so formulaic. Same protagonists, same journeys, same stories, same book. I enjoyed the start then it started down the lets change the names but keep the story exactly the same game. I would be surprised if he wrote it himself or just churned out some fan fiction to pay for a kitchen remodel. Shame.
