Best-selling author and award-winning adventurer Ross Edgley has been studying the art of resilience for years, applying all he has learned to become the first person in history to swim all the way round Great Britain, breaking multiple world records along the way. Now, Ross turns his attention to mental strength and Stoicism.
Ross Edgley famously ran a marathon pulling a 1.4-tonne car and climbed a rope the height of Everest (8,848 m), after living with Yamabushi warrior monks in Japan and partaking in Shamanic pain rituals with fire ants in the Amazon jungle. On his epic 1,780-mile journey around Great Britain, which lasted 157 days, Ross swam through giant jellyfish, arctic storms, ‘haunted’ whirlpools and polluted shipping lanes, going so hard, and so fast, his tongue fell apart.
Ross’ previous book, The World’s Fittest Book, was a Sunday Times number one best seller and explored the science of physical fitness. Now, in The Art of Resilience, Ross uses his swim experience and other amazing endurance feats, where he managed to overcome seemingly insurmountable pain, hardship and adversity, to study the performance of extreme athletes, military and fitness specialists and psychologists to uncover the secrets of mental fitness and explore the concept of resilience, persistence, valour and a disciplined mind-set in overcoming adversity. This groundbreaking work represents a paradigm shift in what we thought the human body and mind were capable of and will give you a blueprint to become a tougher, more resilient and ultimately better human - whatever the challenge you face.

Great read. Impressive feat.
In addition to this, you get the insights from the author's perspective of his time completing the Great British Swim.
He did not set foot on land until he had completed the swim from Margate in SE England, right around the South Coast of England then right around the top of Scotland, then back to Margate, in 157 days !
This was made possible by his friend Captain Matt & family who travelled beside him in their 50 ft yacht and provided somewhere to sleep and eat, and also sound advice on currents, wind and weather.
The statistics show what the swimmer, Ross Edgley achieved:
* Distance swum 1780 miles
* Days in water 157
* Estimated strokes 2.3 million
During the swim Ross ate 649 bananas, received 100 jellyfish stings, and used 3kg Vaseline on chafing of the skin ! He seemed to have a huge appetite and estimated he needed 10 to 15000 calories a day !
It is a fascinating story and had a very happy ending; not far from the end he received bad news that his father was not responding to cancer treatment and may not survive, but had urged Ross to carry on and complete the swim regardless. Then on the day he finally reached Margate, Ross was overjoyed to see his father there to greet him, having responded to treatment. A happy ending indeed !

Ross is incredibly inspirational, not just through his athletic accomplishments, but also his modest and humble nature. If you are about to attempt a 5k quarantine PB, do so following reading a few chapters of this for serious motivation!
He is also a Loughborough legend and I feel honoured to have followed his journey from when he was giving talks on his old nutrition business, to meeting him on his UK tour and now watching him deserve all his success. As a recent graduate, there is no better role model. A phenomenal book which will keep you amazed, intrigued and definitely in awe throughout!

I’m a paramedic by trade and part of this involves dealing with those suffering from mental health problems. I honestly believe that reading and then living the lessons from this book and others like it would help more people than the current trend of throwing medication at depression and anxiety. We are a nation of sofa dwellers and hopefully this will encourage people to get up, get outside and take a more philosophical approach to exercise and health.
Great work Ross. I winced at the duct tape dressings though!

I feel the title does the book a dis-service as it's more than a book on resilience, it combines a lit of great thoughts and ideas about resilience along with documenting his journey as he swam around Britain.
As a big fan of stoicism and being resilient, I'm probably predisposed to like this as I already agree with the concepts, but can't recommend it highly enough as an intro to this stuff and a great adventure story to boot. If you want to further your research there are very extensive references to help you.
For me three key points I'd love everyone to get are;
1. Be active, in both mind and body. We've known since Greek times that you need to be both physically and mentally fit to be the best human you can be.
2. If you have kids teach them 1. Be active with them - Ross mentions this a lot, but his long term base helped achieve the swim. You don't have to want your kids to swim around a country to want to set them up to be the best weapon they can be. Build fit, healthy and resilient children - they will thank you for their whole adult lives.
3. If you have friends and family, support them in their endeavours and passions, even if you don't understand them!
Read, enjoy and be resilient!
