The laugh-out-loud, reach-for-your-hanky story of one of Australia's best-loved comedians.
Anh Do nearly didn't make it to Australia. His entire family came close to losing their lives on the sea as they escaped from war-torn Vietnam in an overcrowded boat. But nothing - not murderous pirates nor the imminent threat of death by hunger, disease or dehydration as they drifted for days - could quench their desire to make a better life in a country where freedom existed.
Life in Australia was hard, an endless succession of backbreaking work, crowded rooms, ruthless landlords and make-do everything. But there was a loving extended family and always friends and play and something to laugh about for Anh, his brother, Khoa, and their sister, Tram. Things got harder when their father left home when Anh was 13 - they felt his loss very deeply, and their mother struggled to support the family on her own.
His mother's sacrifice was an inspiration to Anh, and he worked hard during his teenage years to help her make ends meet, also managing to graduate high school and then university. Another inspiration was the comedian Anh met when he was about to sign on for a 60-hour-a-week corporate job. Anh asked how many hours he worked. 'Four', the answer came back, and that was it. He was going to be a comedian!
The Happiest Refugee tells the incredible, uplifting and inspiring life story of one of our favourite personalities. Tragedy, humour, heartache and unswerving determination - a big life with big dreams. Anh's story will move and amuse all who hear it.

In 2011, The Happiest Refugee won Book of the Year in both the Australian Book Industry Awards and the Indie Awards so, needless to say, I was expecting something special ... and I certainly got exactly that.
His family's stories are beautifully expressed by Anh, with his trademark humour, kindness, strength, sadness and intelligence. I cried and laughed in equal measure. More importantly, I walked away from the experience with a deep desire to find more compassion and gratitude within myself.
Thank you for sharing your story Anh.
Sad in parts but very funny in others. Anh's mum has had a substantial impact on this mans upbringing and for a refugee family to travel to another country to settle and be thankful that the country has treated them well, but they have worked extremely hard to be successful.
Wonderful story. Highly recommended.
This has great appeal very much like our State Governor who came to Australia from Vietnam as a refugee virtually penniless with a suitcase full of dreams and became a governors aid then became governor himself.
Anh do and his family have been through an amazing experience that touches my heart and opened my eyes. I love how his family reach for their dreams of a better life, I love that that they are not afraid to try in making their own stamp as individuals and as entrepreneurs through hard work and vision, or changing their goals in hope for happiness within the Australian society.
Dear Anh, I hope this message reaches you
Good on you for writing an auto-biography, my family and love this book. Please write more. Also your weirdo books are funny and enjoyable. If you ever come to the clarence valley to preform, my family will be there,

Thoughout, he see the positives, laughs at the misunderstandings, cries at the genuine tragedies and tells of all the people who helped.
He's optimistic throughout and if he has a message, it's don't be afraid to ask for help.

The book itself is a fantastic read and my Mom loved the unexpected surprise. A fantastic outcome for all in the end. Thank you to everyone at Elite. :)

This story is amazing!! I now have to find all the other books, tv shows and movies to catch up on my Ahn infatuation!!!

Very enjoyable read and also inspiring. Anh's outlook on life is refreshing and it's great to read a positive book. Would recommend this to others
