4.0 out of 5 starsMy Honest Book Review
Reviewed in Australia on 20 January 2020
The Last Wish is a collection of short stories about the Witcher – Geralt of Rivia. It is the first book of the Witcher series and is simultaneously based on during Geralt’s recuperation from injury and recounting the stories that provide foundations for integral story threads throughout the whole series. The stories themselves are well-written and translated and as such, the story flows effortlessly. My only draw-down on this collection is that having watched the series and played the video games, I did feel this was a re-read rather than a first read but that is a me-issue not a book-issue.

3.0 out of 5 starsAn OK read
Reviewed in Australia on 27 December 2019
Alright book of short stories as an introduction to the Witcher series. As an avid reader of this genre I was disappointed with the Amazon cost when purchasing this on Kindle. There are a lot of books out there, better quality than this and three times longer for a similar price. Would have given it another star if I didn't feel that Amazon were trying to make money off the game and Netflix series

4.0 out of 5 stars jumps around a lot

Decided to try this book due to the series and games based on it. This seemed to jump around a lot to different events. I will try the next one hoping for a solid adventure that does not end in a few pages.

Incredible story, that was full of action and adventure. The world and characters were incredibly vivid and well developed. I really enjoyed the book which is a collection of short adventures, as seen in the television show. Amazing read! Can’t wait to start the next book

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent content, easy to read, but not a literary masterpiece

I like folk stories. I like adventure. I love dialogue. And I love excellent turn of phrase. This book aces three out of the four. Fun read. Its hard to put down and I find the content incredibly interesting; particularly because it reminds me of the stories my parents would tell when I was a child. Its just not written that well. But hey, if you want entertainment, its a great start.

I don't like that the book jumped from place to place and adventure to adventure without a connection. Just seemed like lots of short stories that were not cohesive.

Strong characters faced with difficult choices, great world building. I started itching to play the games reading through this. If you enjoy roaming adventure style fantasy with a dark twist would recommend

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read for those that enjoyed the other books or the games

I played the Witcher 3 video game and loved the world so have started the books. I have read the first in the series and now this, which is set before the main series.
The last wish is an episodic story telling the tale of geralt and dandelion and they're first meeting with yennifer.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, meeting new characters and monsters and seeing that geralt is more than just a cold blooded killer looking to get paid but thinks and plans for the best outcome for all; a great antihero. I loved his meeting with yennifer and dandelions sarcastic nature.
If you like the game or enjoyed geralt other adventures this is worth your time. If you like fantasy and adventure in an adults world then this is for you. The author has created a wonderfully visceral world with consequences and nuance. I applaud his efforts and can't wait to read book 2

4.0 out of 5 stars If you started with the game, it is well worth a read

The author writes in a slightly disjointed fashion. The main story is interspersed with numerous short stories that help make up the book but they do not always appear to be in sync chronologically (it may be that i need to read it again) . It took me a little while to adapt to the authors style, but his description and mental image creation of Geralts adventures are well worth the time taken to read and after a short time i found it hard to put the book down. I have since purchased the next 2 books in the series

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable!

I bought this after playing The Witcher 3 to death. I assumed the book was based on the game and not the other way around. I now understand alot of the in game refrences better now!

Its a fantastic collection of short stories which add to a larger narrative. It follows the adventures of Geralt of Rivia as he encounters all sorts of monsters, including some especially nasty people. The stories are also loosley based upon some fairy tales that you are sure to recognise.

Geralt comes across as a flawed character, though highly likeable and he doesn't seem invincible which I find refreshing in fantasy, for characters such as Sparhawk and Aragorn always seem to overpowered and therefore the danger element is removed.

Once again it is a superb collection of stories that are sure to excite and enthral. It is also not a difficult read, though you can tell it is a translated text. Some how I find that adds to the fantasy.

Enjoy!
