To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
I found this difficult to follow as we danced backwards and forwards in time, and then kept on having flash-backs within those times, and since similar awful things happened to 2 generations of the same family years apart, I found it confusing, muddling and really hard to follow. So in the end I was not able to enjoy it fully.
I would have given this more stars but it jumped about from the 40's to the present day, why do authors do that, can't they just tell a story as it unfolds in chronological order. I read a book for relaxation & I don't want to keep having to think when something was & who it was happening to, having said that it was a nice story.
What a muddle!! Inconsistent characters, storyline didn’t hang together at all. Unbelievable all round! I only ploughed on because I thought it might get better but the ending was dire - it just finished! I turned the page, only to find the rest of the book taken up with “Dear Reader”, Acknowledgements and a prologue of The Girl in the Letter. Don’t bother!!
This is a very readable book with lots of excitement and at times sadness. I didn’t give it 5 stars because of the way it was written. Spanning over 50 years, involving at least 10 main characters. Each chapter told a story about the life of an individual which was very engaging but annoying you got to the end of a chapter expecting the next to follow on to tell you what happens next to find it begins 20 years later and about a different person. The story continued in this mode throughput which I found very frustrating.
I could not put this book down. Suspenseful and heart-wrenching—it tackles some really tough issues, but it is so worth reading. I was swept away in this story and so invested in these characters. It was such a refreshing take on multiple narrative point of view to convey a sensational story about four generations of a family. The story telling is fantastic and I can’t praise or recommend this author enough.
I have been so looking forward to Emily's second book. I was not disappointed ! A real triumph ! Written with such sensitivity I was reading the laast few pages through teary eyes! The characters come to life off the pages. The downside is going to have to wait for Emily's third book.
I couldn’t put this down... the author’s last book was fascinating but this new one is amazing.. Ms Gunnis writes with a clarity that adds so much to her narrative - I was emotionally hooked from the first chapter.. Please write faster Emily!
