WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AN ADORED member of a small town community is arrested and charged with the most heinous crime you can imagine? Whats more, there is a growing pile of evidence that virtually guarantees the guilt of the charged man, including DNA and eyewitness accounts. What happens to your case, however, when the defense comes up with irrefutable evidence that contradicts the evidence for the accused, including conflictoy DNA results, conflictory physical evidence and finally, conflictory eye witness accounts that place the accused across country in front of other eye witness accounts?
A reasonable man might well lose his mind at this point. An unreasonable man might go postal. A determined man may well quote Sherlock Holmes, and deduce that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. And this is where the book starts calling the Constant Reader home. #Lovestephenking
Enter from stage left a new major character. Spoilers prevent me from telling you who this is, but your heart will skip a beat when they enter. It aint sherlock Holmes, but he/she solves the case and destroys the threat with the same aplomb. Not without loss, or penalty, of course, this character has seen too much, and lost too much to expect that.
The book’s pace picks up at around the 40% mark, and its like Mr King has had a quarduple shot double latte for breakfast with his corn flakes. There are hints of the supernatural scattered throughout even the opening sections (*does happy dance*) and all of this comes true like a dream in the finale. Its not hard core horror, those days are in Mr King’s long distant but still adored past, and the new age King writes a combination of world class crime novels mixed up with whatever he damn well likes. Which is fine by me, of course, i read everything he ever publishes, and preorder them all months in advance even before resding the synopsis.
But put against classics like SALEMS LOT, CHRISTINE, THE SHINING and even DESPERATION, this would be rated M as opposed to R for the titles i quoted above. But that’s no bad thing. Mr King has mellowed, he has evolved into somethnig greater than “just“ horror even though i for one would just love an epic new 800 page horror fest. But that's what his back library is for. Its still there, its all still in print (and probably will be for eternity, thanks to the evolution of the e.reader) but for now, we CR’s still bave aplethora of new King books to read.
Four stars for THE OUTSIDER. Its not perfect, but its new, its supernatural themed, and its written by our King. Gotta love that.

A compelling and chilling suspense novel that will delight all fans of King's best-selling Hodges Trilogy.
Following the phenomenal success of his Bill Hodges series - Mr Mercedes, Finders Keepers and End of Watch, all number one best sellers - Stephen King has written an enthralling crime thriller with a unique twist.
When an 11-year-old boy is found murdered, forensic evidence and reliable eyewitnesses undeniably point to the town's popular Little League coach. But the jailed suspect, arrested in a public spectacle, has an alibi, and further research convinces Detective Ralph Anderson that the coach was indeed out of town. So how can he have been in two places at the same time?

Great Premise Let Down By Lazy Last Half
Reviewed in Australia on 23 November 2018
This started so well, so promisingly, with the mystery of what was happening keeping me glued to the pages. Which is why when the Big Reveal explained it all, I couldn’t believe how lazy and cheap it was, that something so well set up turned out to be nothing special whatsoever, something I could’ve found in the pages of almost any other horror story. Sometimes Stephen King’s endings do fall flat, I get that. But this one simply felt as though little or no thought had been put into it, as if he didn’t really care. And that, for me, is the worst feeling a reader can ever have.

Some fans of King are not enjoying his latest works, but most constant readers are loving the direction his writing has taken. There are also many new constant reader, who had previously tried his book and found them not to their liking. Too gory, too far out, too unbelievable.
Whilst his works are still pretty out there with just enough of the supernatural, they are more crime thriller than flat out horror. I would recommend reading Mr Mercedes, Finders Keepers and End of Watch before this book (although it really is a brilliant stand alone novel) for more background on his character Holly Gibney.
Five Stars from this constant reader, I’m looking forward to October and the real ease of his latest offering, Elevation.

Thoroughly enjoyed this story. When a little boy is murdered, all witnesses and evidence lead to a children’s baseball coach. But the coach has an airtight alibi, even camera footage of him in another part of the country. This is when the story gets really interesting. In true King style, things go from ordinary to downright weird, but always gripping. The Outsider is a great read with an appearance of a familiar character. Loved it! . I love Stevie - I really do - but I couldn't finish this one. It started well (actually the subject matter was really hard to read but it was as well written as always) but when I realised that it was the ole supernatural deus ex machina, I lost the will to read.

The book was well written and kept me turning pages. After building the characters and the plot, the ending was sudden and weak. It was like he got to a certain point of the story and then decided to end it all quickly. The end was surely not written by Steven King as so much work went into developing a story like he does well (and keeps us coming back) to complete the story with an ending that just did not fit the storyline.
I was disappointed with the way the ending was written rather than the actual ending.

I really wanted to like this more. As a teen I was obsessed with King’s books, but this one really just didn’t speak to me. It was some what predictable and the characters never fully grew on me. That said, as with all of his books, it was well written with very clear plot progression. I didn’t hate this book, I just wanted something a bit more.

It’s been a while between Stephen King books for me. The last I recall was IT. King has a habit of knocking off his main characters like bowling pins and with Outsiders he excels. No one is safe. This is a terrific read though not for the faint hearted. Thoroughly enjoyed and have booked another couple of books in the series on the strength of it.

I have been a strong Stephen King fan in years gone by and was recommended this book by a colleague. It was absorbing enough at first and while I know it's important to suspend one's belief in SK books, I felt this one went a little too far. I simply stopped reading when 7/8 finished and congratulate myself on getting that far.

On word..... Excellent.

I'm not sure how Stephen King keeps on doing it. For over 40 years now he's managed to keep the shocks coming whilst always moving with the times and writing in such an excellently descriptive way that we as the reader feel as though we are going along for the ride with his always colourful and diverse group of characters.
The Outsider once again fits in with all of the above as Detective Ralph Anderson sets out to solve a sickening crime, for which he has a suspect, sports coach Terry Maitland, in custody for along with his fingerprints and DNA at the crime scene as well as a long list of eyewitnesses placing Maitland at the scene. The only problem is there is also proof Maitland was elsewhere at the time of the crime.
Stephen King then takes us on another one of those journeys that only he can as the story unfolds piece by piece before all the said pieces tie together beautifully at the end.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Outsider and if I could give any other prospective readers of this book a bit of advice it would be to savour every last page and place yourself in the story at all times. Do not rush any part of it. 5 stars!!

I have written this review with 13 % to go on my kindle,.The first half was great ,but after that it just became boring rubbish.None of the characters would leave a lasting impression.I might finish this book in a year or two but I doubt as I really don't care what happened.Pure waste of money ,in future I will read the one star reviews as they seem more honest.

A generic “horror” novel that should be avoided.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 September 2018Verified Purchase
Oh dear. It started so promisingly, pulling you in as to how the accused could be in two places at once. Half way in I was thinking, “I really hope this doesn’t turn out the way it appears to be going...” But, alas, it did. The book was so bad I really don’t think Stephen King actually wrote it. A truly awful book, predicatable plot and ending.

Dull Stuff from the Ex-Master
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 November 2018Verified Purchase
This is dull stuff - despite what other reviewers say. There is hardly an original thought in it. It's more a police proceedural novel than anything else, and, after the first few chapters, not very interesting for that. Stuck for a climax, King has the bad cop shooting at the good cops. And then (spoiler alert) they take down the 'evil one' by bashing him over the head. Deep stuff! King has been off his game for a long time now. This does nothing to put him back on track.

A great involved read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 August 2018Verified Purchase
I haven't bought or read a Stephen King book in quite a long time but have read many in the past. I bought this to read on holiday, with a few others but actually it took me most of the holiday to read this. The writing, as you'd expect, was nothing short of brilliant. I won't spoil for others but the character build up and attention to detail was fantastic, the storyline was intriguing and kept me guessing for a long long time. With the turns in the story I found myself rooting for characters and then equally loathing them in a space of a few chapters. The ending was fantastic and I'm sure there could be more stories off the back of this one....? I would highly recommend, maybe not a light easy read for the beach but certainly worthwhile and memorable. I have already recommended to a number of friends and will be looking for more Stephen King books as soon as I've cleared the holiday book backlog.
