Product description
One of John Ford's most cherished projects, THE QUIET MAN took years to finance but became one of his greatest box-office successes and an enduringly beloved classic, John Wayne stars as Sean Thornton, a retired American boxing champion trying to put tragedy behind him by returning to Innisfree, the bucolic Irish village of his birth, He purchases his birthplace from its current owner, enraging the wealthy and bellicose Red Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen), who had designs on the property, On arriving at his cottage, Thornton finds it being swept out by Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara), a redheaded vision from whom he steals a not completely unwelcome kiss, After engaging in a subterfuge involving a horse race, some of the locals manage to get the disgruntled Red Will to allow his sister to be courted by the American, But the courtship ritual of the village is only the first of many local practices that the bewildered Thornton must endure if he is to have Mary Kate, Wayne gives a surprisingly nuanced performance as the fish out of water, and he is perfectly matched with the radiantly rambunctious O'Hara, The rest of the cast is splendid as well, and the lush color photography garnered an Academy Award for Winston Hoch, John Ford also won an Oscar for his directing, and it's impossible not to be charmed by the artistry with which he weaves his rollicking, robust tale.

The film is a bit "dark"
When I first played it and selected "play movie", it played the commentary version
I was expecting it to play the movie without any commentary
I eventually found what to select to play just the movie
It would be better for the purchaser, if "play movie" actually played just the movie, without the commentary, when first playing the DVD
Perhaps the default "play movie" could be set at the movie only, before it leaves the wholesaler?

Nice doc by a guy who sounds like Mark Cousins on heroin.
This was one of my dad's favourite films. I watched it everytime it was on in my childhood (I am now 59).
Didn't do me any good. Even before '#tag times' you learn you can't throw the woman you love over your arm, snog her to make things right. It is of it's time. Mysoginistic these days.
Racist? My ex-wife is irish, may be not...Lol!
It's my Rom-Com.

I loved the film. It has a simple story, the scenery is spectacular and the two leads are a pleasure to watch. The story unfolds at a leisurely pace giving you time to relax and savor the whole experience rather than just rushing through on adrenaline. There is a strong cast of quirky supporting characters. It opens your eyes to of a way of life that is long gone and to certain customs that are hard to believe existed in Ireland. For example, a woman in Ireland couldn't marry a man if her brother objected!
The film is bathed in sweet nostalgia and I enjoyed it but I think that for a younger audience it might be deemed a bit slow.
