Very well-made documentary that gives an insight into why war should be an absolute last resort. Not enough people see programs like this and really think about it.

Startling contrast with previously grainy black and white images transformed into clear, powerful, dramatic and beautiful clarity.

Amazing achievement to bring the past to “life”. Makes it all much more relatable.

BEAUTIFULLY REMASTERED
Reviewed in the United States on 12 June 2019Verified Purchase
The first 30 minutes are in black and white and begin the story of WW 1. When they switch to color, the people come alive. They sharpened the images way up, added color and even used a lip reader to know what the soldiers were saying, then dubbed the voices. IDK if people appreciate the work done on this film. It deals only with the trench soldiers, not the Air Force, Marines or the Navy. Those definitely could be candidates for future films. The colorization is not what other companies did in the 70's. It is real sharp, variable in tone and saturation. Looks like they filmed it yesterday. They even had to adjust the speed to be natural, because in 1917, the movies were hand cranked so the speed could be real fast or real slow. They made a natural movement of motion. Definitely worth watching if you are interested in the First World War. I think most of the negative reviews on this film were because the people ordered a PAL version for USA. I made sure mine said Region A/1. Works and plays wonderfully.

World War I like you've never seen
Reviewed in the United States on 7 July 2019Verified Purchase
The negative reviews of this DVD tend to stem around its playability (not being the correct region). For clarification, my DVD worked normally, so if you have an American DVD & choose this same one, it should work without any issues.
As to the documentary itself, it is a set of voice-overs by actual World War I British veterans as we view the battlefield of what was then known as the "Great War" and the "War to end all wars." Obviously the latter ended up being a hopeless case of wishful thinking, but until the 20th century the world had never seen combat operations on this scale.
If you happen to think that starting more wars is a good idea, I would highly recommend you watch this film as it shows war in all of its raw, unvarnished horror. The viewer gets up close & personal with mortar fire, artillery fire, chemical warfare, flame throwers, tanks & all of the other hideous instruments of war used a century ago.
While there are occasions when we have no choice but to engage with other countries to defend ourselves, this present film is a cautionary tale that it's never a good idea to be in a rush to open the gates of war. Once they're open, it is quite a rigmarole to get them shut again.

One For the Ages
Reviewed in the United States on 12 October 2019Verified Purchase
I've met young people who regard the Vietnam War as just a historical event. It's understandable. It didn't happen in their lifetime. It seems like ancient history. But at least we still have many vets who were there and can tell us about it first hand. There is no one left to give personal testimony about a conflict that happened over a century ago. But using mind blowing technical skills, Peter Jackson's filmmakers bring back the images and voices of some of the soldiers who served and fought in that long ago war. Much of the footage hasn't been seen before. It's restored, speed corrected and amazingly colorized. It doesn't look 100 years old at all. It feels almost contemporary. And to me the audio effects were incredibly effective too. There's no narrator. No actors. Just archival audio from the vets themselves. And they are eloquent to say the least. Unlike other WWI documentaries I've seen, there's nothing much about politics and causes and campaigns and general history. It's just about the uncommon experience of going off to fight in a war and what it was like. I can't recall any film that has done it better than this one. I think "They Shall Not Grow Old" is one for the ages.

Brilliant!
Reviewed in the United States on 7 January 2020Verified Purchase
This may not be the action-filled Peter Jackson film you are expecting. This is a film of great respect for those who fought for England in the First World War. The black-and-white photography was cleaned up then colorized to match the actually colors of the uniforms and land where the original films were taken. In the background and under the narration, lip-readers translated the words being spoken which were then dubbed in as part of the background sounds and, sometimes, the only sound one hears. Rifle, cannon, and grenade fire are frighteningly real. This does not heroize the soldier but shows what they experienced without judgement and with great respect.

Stunning Restoration of War-time Footage Brings WWI to Life
Reviewed in the United States on 19 July 2019Verified Purchase
World War I, "the war to end all wars," shook the world over 100 years ago, when making moving pictures was a fresh new technology. The old black & white films of soldiers at home & on the front are jiddery & paced faster than life, making the visions that they captured seem distant & unreal, like caffeinated cartoon marionettes striding across a stage. Peter Jackson's painstaking restoration has worked miracles with surviving footage, not only smoothing & slowing them to the pace of life, but sharpening images & adding life-like color as well as appropriate sound effects & dialog to match the action on the screen. Instead of a century ago, the resulting images could have been shot no more than 20 years ago. Technically, this documentary is a jaw-dropping achievement.
The content of the film is even more remarkable. Culled from more than 600 hours of existing film of WWI, the work focuses on & reconstructs the immediate experience of the British soldier on the front lines & trenches of WWI. You are there with him & he is a solid living flesh-&-blood human being living on the razor edge of life & death. Many of the soldiers captured on film likely were killed in combat in no-man's land minutes or hours after. Some of the images are graphic & disturbing, but reflect the realities of war, so this film is neither for small children nor the faint-hearted.
As a retired military service member with an interest in military history, I consider this blu-ray to be essential to my video collection. Highly recommended
