4.0 out of 5 starsThis book has all of the action, thrills, and danger that I expect from Matthew Reilly.
Reviewed in Australia on 12 October 2019
Welcome back Matthew Reilly! I’m a long time MR fan and love the energy and extreme reality of his action-packed books. The latest book in the Jack West Jr. series is a winner. The big settings, the action, the impossible situations, and the clever escapes and outcomes are signature components of MR’s writing.

Having read all of the previous books in the series, I must mention that the one before this book (The Four Legendary Kingdoms) was my least favourite – It seemed to have ventured into an even more surreal world than that of the other books. MR fans know his books are over-the-top (think of a major motion picture with incredibly complex settings packed with traps, action, explosions, surprises, and extraordinary escapes). When the previous book (4) seemed to have crossed over to another realm I was worried that Jack’s story had passed its best. But, I’m very pleased to say that this new instalment, The Three Secret Cities, has reinvigorated the Jack West Jr. series.

Although it continues on from the ‘four’ book, its settings were grounded in a more real world, which I found easier to relate to and ‘believe’. As usual, the cast of characters was substantial, but even with all of their sub-plots in play, Jack still remained the core focus as he tried to save the world from oblivion. Without revealing anything specific, there were twists that I didn’t expect (nor hoped for) that knocked me for six. But that’s what books do – they draw you in, they engage you, they make you happy, they make you sad, they keep you hooked.

Jack West Jr. is back. This ‘three’ book in the series has all of the action, thrills, danger, complexity, and impossible escapes that I expect from Matthew Reilly. Thanks MR for continuing to share Jack with us.

Very predictable, an OK read but nothing that strays to far from a well proven formula. Not really fussed to read the follow up.

The newest book is just as action-packed and thrilling as previous works by Matthew Reilly.
It continues right where The Four Legendary Kingdoms ended, and once again ends with a cliffhanger.
Because it is a sequel, readers must read the previous books in the series first, and I highly recommend reading the Shane Schofield/Scarecrow series up to Scarecrow beforehand.

A must read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another fun explosive read
Reviewed in Australia on 7 April 2020
Matthew Reilly is an author that never fails to deliver with his action packed story lines Yes it is like reading an action movie as you jump from adventure to adventure with the peril ratcheting up as the story progresses

This is another great book in the Jack West Jr. I have loved all of these though the last (The Four Legendary Kingdoms) was a little to out there for me but I am glad to say that he is back to his formula that I absolutely love. After saying that you do need to read the previous book as this one picks up where that one ends In fact do yourself a favour and read all his books

I was given a copy of this book but this is a true and honest review

Lost Ancient History, Passed Down By An Ancient Civilisation Unknown To Only A Selected Few Privileged People Through Out History : Only to the Very Elite : The King of the Kings & Like!
This is not the history books we as commoners know. This is the Real Deal! The Original Book Of Geniuses not the tamed watered down version rewritten by multiple men over generations or The Papyrus of Zeus, The Word of Thoth:
A Lost Ancient Language Known to only Two Humans in the World : Lily & her older twin brother Alexander.
Mysteries of the Universe, A Lost Ancient Race that bought their wisdom, technology & Healing Ways to Ancient Man! And the Race & games to receive all that Power, Wisdom, Knowledge, to know what no other alive knows.
In Book 4 we saw a small diversion from a typical Jack West Jr Series being more like a "Scarecrow Series" Format in its fast paced, non stop action adventure, over a short period of time, but Book 5 see's a return too an Original Jack West Jr format! A race to an Ancient City lost to time or an Artefact (or both) over a longer period of time in to beat the bad guy's to the treasure, the knowledge & most importantly to save a loved one & usually the world!

Matthew Reilley's attention to the smallest detail, his impeccable research of history, his imagination in associating this or that to a particular time, place, person or artefact is ingenious. He truly is a Master Magician in his field.
And Best Of All, An Aussie Talent; A gift given to this world from the impeccable year of 1973! Just like Me!

One of the things I love the most about Matthew's Characters are the way they are written. They are real, much like me & you. They have their faults, they don't always win! And yes they often come last in a race or fight, but never ever give up!
Just like one of Jack's favourite sayings
"You don't come this far, to only come this far"! And Jack & Co are real men & women, they have faults, they make mistakes, they don't always get it right, but what they do get right is their morals, a sense of justice, right from wrong, loyalty & mateship, their depth of character & caring. Their not always the smartest, fastest or strongest, but they never, ever give up no matter the cost, who or what they lose!
Then u have the other character's, Jack's opponents. And they too are well written, but usually in total opposition in character to Jack as in they have no morals, no ethics, they fight & play dirty, doing whatever it takes to win, even that means killing an innocent or destroying a landmark. Nothing & no one gets in their way! Its these guys (Male or Female) you just love to hate & as you read along you begin imagine their demise & how spectacularly it will occur. Just how will this beast die screaming? Does the real scene match the imagined scenes in your own mind? That's always one of my favourite reveals of any Matthew Reilly book!

And then there's the Matt Reilly trademarks "the booby traps" (how does he keep coming up with more elaborate better working traps)? "Or the History" (real, imagined & amalgamated), "the weapons", "the machines of war",
"the armour & armoury". The detailed description of each gun, grappling hook gun, plane, chopper or battle tank!
His description is so real it feels as if your driving the tank yourself or pulling the pin of a grenade to toss at the enemy!

Next we come to the dynamic world building. His story's while usually set in present day & time also at the same time take us back to Ancient times & places that have forever been lost to history or are places no man has ever lived to tell the tale of. This is where Matthew Reilly really shines & comes into his own!
Describing a lost civilisation is so detailed & remarkable you see it in your minds eye as if you were staring at it in the flesh. But the detailed diagrams always help. His imagination rivals my own & I feel a kindred spirit in Mr Reilly,
I only wish I had his ability to put it into words of my own that could make me write like him.

Congratulations Matt, its all this & more that makes you my All-Time Favourite Male Author Australian or not!
The only thing that sucks about your books is the excruciating long wait between releases of a Jack West Jr Book due to the in depth research of history, places artefacts & people & papers, but its totally understandable as much goes into each & every book & it's worth the wait!

I Rate The Three Secret Cities by Matthew Reilly 5 ⭐ OUT OF 5⭐,
I'd love to give it more, 6⭐Out of 5⭐
but it's just not possible!
Waiting with baited breath 4 2020 and book # 6 The Two Something Something’s!

4.0 out of 5 stars ‘For three whole days after the Great Games, the Underworld lay silent.’
Reviewed in Australia on 20 January 2019
And then, the action started. The Four Legendary Kingdoms are in turmoil. The world is doomed, unless Jack West Jr and his friends can save it. It’s simple, really, all they must do is find the three ancient weapons in three secret cities, complete a series of ancient puzzles within seven days and the world will be saved. One problem is that he first must identify the location of the three cities, another problem is that quite a few people are after Jack West. They want him dead.

So, what will Jack and his team do? Well, there’s plenty of travel, lots of danger to overcome and some incredible escapes.

This is the fifth book in the Jack West Jr series, and I love the adrenaline-filled action. Pure escapism for me, totally unrealistic but loads of fun. Mostly. I’ve become attached to a few of the characters along the way, and they don’t all make it to the end. Those who do make it seem blessed with superhuman powers: how else could they recover so quickly and fight so effectively?

This is a series where the reading order of the books is important. I’m now looking forward to the next instalment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Reilly - suspend all notions of reality

(spoiler included) If you're buying this book, then I assume you've read all the prior books in the series and know what to expect, which is a lot of crazy, unbelievable and fast moving action scenes. You get all the familiar characters and some other characters from Matthew's other books - The prior book, the four legendary kingdoms, had scarecrow, and now the three cities has Aloysius Knight. There are a few deaths too, which I feel were a bit pointless and doesn't change the storyline much.

My niggle is that the kindle version is £11, but currently you can get the four legendary kingdoms at £0.99! I don't know how Amazon is pricing these books but it feels very overpriced. If you can wait a few weeks, I think the price will come down.

Bring on the next novel, the two....?

1.0 out of 5 stars Really Disapointing - I won’t read another.

Where to start? I have read all of Matthew Reillys novels and this is by far the worst. Ill judged and poorly written it is extremely disappointing.
When Reilly was at his best with Ice Station & Temple the writing was much more adult and in depth. I rank Ice Station as being one of my favourite books ever. However this is truly awful. Childlike script and a lack of depth.
Having read 4 Legendary Kingdoms again prior to this, I was hoping it would be a little more grounded this time. How wrong can you be.
I will not spoil anything but the destruction of a tower block in New York City and the terrorist incident outside of the Houses of Parliament are completely ill judged and were hard to read considering recent atrocities in both places. All I could think was ‘how has anyone signed off on this’.
I think that Reilly has a team around him now who can not say ‘No’ to his woeful writing. I am aware he has had many personal battles. But this is extremely poor and truly laughable. I won’t be reading any more of Reillys work. He has gone downhill at a rapid pace. Sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Atemloses Abenteuer

At this point, if you're following these books you're going to keep reading them. If you haven't picked them up yet, go back to 7 Deadly Wonders and start the series from there - there is *so* much to get caught up on before picking this book up. (Though in fairness, you can largely follow this particular book just from reading 4 Legendary Kingdoms first.) HOWEVER, that "shocking ending"... wasn't, at least not for me. Until the final few words. And *now* I am intrigued and looking forward to the 2 ____ _____ with baited breath!

Reilly has created another rollercoaster ride for us to take with Jack West Jr. The story continues from "The Four Legendary Kingdoms." Jack along with his family and friends set out to save the world. Reilly barely lets us catch our breath as we speed to the end, with more twists and shockers to keep you riveted. And now is the worst part... the long wait until the next novel arrives. I hope he writes fast!
