5.0 out of 5 starsDelightful.

I thoroughly enjoyed this gentle murder mystery. The characterisations are wonderful and keep you engaged throughout as the story meanders along with many twists and turns. It is not a fast paced, action thriller, but is nevertheless an intriguing mystery told with sensitivity and humour. I can’t wait for the second book.

Despite thinking Richard Osman is terrific, despite enjoying the old folk characters, despite the aimiability of the gentle humour (don’t think you’ll fall off your couch laughing), despite the originality of the premise, this isn’t all that great. I wanted to really like it, but it somehow doesn’t quite get over the hurdle. It’s not a bad book by any means and I’ll give the next one a go when it comes out, but it does leave something to be desired in the plot department, introducing important characters towards the end. It’s good form in a whodunnit to drop a couple of hints about the culprit that astute readers pick up while the rest of us only realise that we did in fact know something pertinent but missed it. Also, the character of Bogdan is a bit too good to be true. What is nice is the former spy character of Elizabeth, the seniors getting their groove on with Skype etc, the multicultural cast and the sometimes sly wisdom of the elderly. In short, Osman shouldn’t give up, but let’s hope the next one’s better.

It is wonderful to discover a new author who’s work you love. Sadly it’s rare to have it happen. Richard Osman stands head & shoulders (I couldn’t help it) above other new entries. His characters leap off the page & become genuine friends. Sounds crazy but it’s true. The plot matches the beautifully paced life they live in their retirement village & cleverly ties them together. I’m so impressed by the outstanding character development. It’s hard to believe this is his first novel. The Thursday Murder Club is a wonderful premise for many more tales to follow & with the diverse members the possible story lines are endless! It’s even written in “proper” English, another treat. My day was filled visiting a idyllic retirement village & meeting the Thursday Murder Club & now I’m finding I don’t want to leave.
If you enjoy novels which have a gentle humour amidst a absorbing mystery you will be delighted. I recommend this book unreservedly.

I really rather enjoyed this book. Yes, it held all the elements of a classic whodunnit but with a slightly offbeat flavour.
The characters were, well characters, some would say past their prime, but game for anything, fiercely loyal and you felt as though you got to know them, warts and all.
I look forward to the next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful and charming

What a delightfully charming and entertaining book that was! Four septuagenarians living the life at the upmarket Cooper’s Chase Retirement Village comprise the Thursday Murder Club - Thursdays because that’s when the jigsaw room is free. It’s an opportunity for them to still exercise the grey matter while they can and perhaps, in the process, clear up some cold cases. Only this time it seems the cases are red hot!

Ian Ventham is the owner of the development and he wants to expand it by building additional apartments and also to move the graveyard from when there was a convent on the site to build even more apartments. He is howled down at a consultation meeting at the village but his decision is made. That afternoon his builder, Tony Curran, who has a 25% stake in the business is murdered. No worries, Ventham already has a replacement lined up and brings in the diggers early the next morning. Only to find the graveyard picketed by retirees. There is a bit of a scuffle and Ventham drops down dead. Also murdered! This sends a ripple of excitement through the Thursday Murder Club membership who are ably lead by the formidable Elizabeth. Other members include Ron Ritchie, Ibrahim Arif and Joyce Meadowcroft. They all have their areas of expertise.

Not too much later another body is discovered although this one is much older and it takes a while before its relevance to the plot becomes apparent. The amateur detectives go straight to work on these murders. Elizabeth has her varied and very secret sources that cough up much useful information. They also need some pliable police officers they can pump for information so Elizabeth sets out to organise that with much zeal. She ropes in PC Donna De Freitas and DCI Chris Hudson. These two are utterly helpless to resist the wiles and the lemon drizzle cake of the retirees. Still they soon realise that the oldies mean business and can provide many a clue to solving the cases.

This was a joy to read. Osman brings his characters to life in a way that is humorous and respectful and very lively. The story was smart, funny, heartwarming and, in parts a little heartbreaking but full of warmth and empathy. I hope that doesn’t come across as too mushy 😬. I do enjoy stories about older people still having a go. I don’t like the way they are often portrayed as being invisible. Anyway, I have the ARC of the second book and thought I’d better read this first. I guess you would call it a cosy and, strange as it may seem, I find myself enjoying the odd cosy these days. Looking forward to book 2!

3.0 out of 5 stars I read it to the end . . .

Writing a book is an extraordinary achievement. Writing a good one, even more so. This is a good book. It is not a great book; but it is one that I was happy to finish. Crime books fascinate me, but this was just a little too formulaic and I was nit completely gripped. Having said that, there are great characters and the setting is unique. Worth reading once on holiday and then leaving on the bed for someone else to enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful read

Viewed this with suspicion when I first read the synopsis but found it a delightful read. A little bit Secret Seven meets Miss Marple in some respects, but more adult, and some intricate twists as the plot unfolded.

Some wonderful turns of phrase and a good deal of colour. Changes in narrator were a little confusing at times, Osman puts the narration in the hands of some of the participants, but not all of them, and it was easy to overlook who was talking, periodically. Nicely understated undercurrent of muted lust which is a little frustrating at times, but we are talking about seniors in an aged care facility!

I have been inspired to buy The Man who Died Twice, the sequel, and it is proving to be as alluring as the first dose of the Thursday Murder Club. Looking forward to the next!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Full of wit and insight. A great first mystery novel

If you like very English murder mysteries, then you will really enjoy this.
If you don't, then yes you may find it silly and far fetched.
For a first mystery novel, I thought the plot was very sophisticated and impressive.
The dialogue is also sparkling and witty at times.
Most of all, this novel gives a heart and soul to elderly characters and is full of insightful reflections of those looking back on their life and loves, living in a retirement village and what they can look forward to in the future.

It’s The Famous Five now living in the retirement village for the aged! I have been searching for them for 65 years and here they are at last! Only kidding folks…but it sure could be these beloved hero’s from my pre-teen years. An absolutely delightful read of crime, mayhem and intrique. I loved Richard Osman’s way with words, that I virtually giggled the entire way through and didn’t want the book to end. So much so, that I hurried onto the next in the series. His characters, as were Enid Blyton’s, are so well developed and entirely lovable. Five stars from me.

This is truly a one-off. The characters are quirky. The heroes and heroines are in their dotage. The murders defy all the tropes we have become used to. All of which left me bemused, entertained and turning the next page.

It felt like the Famous Five had turned 70+ and had come back to entertain all of us who loved their adventures as children. Give us more Mr Osman!
