4.0 out of 5 stars Alls Well (that's part HG Wells)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 July 2020
The Time Machine(1960 MGM) warner brothers/Turner DVD 2004 region2 ( & bluray)..
You know the film -At the dawn of a new century HG Wells provides an example of 'time travel' to some rather unimpressed friends, sits in his home made time chair, the shop mannequin, world wars ,the eloi & morlocks ...If you are looking here you most probably find this film to be a much loved favourite from an era when being invaded by Martains, colliding with another planet or as here subterranean cannibals from the future to be exciting ,thought provoking ..a little bit scary ,but excellent family entertainment.
The film(99 mins) filmed on Metrocolor, was produced & directed by George Pal -best known for his shorts 'Pupertoons' & producing many popular films including 'Destination Moon',' When worlds Collide', 'War of the Worlds' & the year previous 'Tom Thumb'.
The film screenplay was written by David Duncan( who decides not to go to 'extreme of time' as in HG Wells novel) The very effective score is by Russell Garcia ,Cinematography by Paul C Vogel, the Academy award winning Visual effects were worked on by a few people including Wah Chang,Gene Warren & Tim Baar ( George Pal designed the 'Morlocks look') & editing by George Tomasini.
The DVD. Is in the original features 1.85:1 ratio & has been 'digitally restored & remastered' & 'remixed in Dolby' - 5.1 digital for English & 1.0 Mono for French & Italian dubbed versions. The picture looks clear & with good colour with very little deterioration of image & just a bit of grain.
The DVD has clear subtitles in 10 languages ( including the dubbed languages & Dutch,Arabic,Spanish,German) .There is a well preserved trailer from the original release. The main extra ( also subtitled in 10 languages-48mins) 'the Time Machine- the Journey Back' is very good, a TV production from 1992 & presented by the lead actor Rod Taylor, the programme is part homage to George Pal & a look at the design ,relocation & eventual repair of the actual 'Time Machine'.Theres also a short 'new scene' that teams up Taylor & Alan Young (who played David & James Filby)30 years after the original film - It's a strong enough concept to have possibly been expanded to a short TV series & has some brief interviews.
& unfortunately that's it for the extras on DVD & bluray ,rather surprising that unlike 'War of the Worlds' ,'Forbidden Planet' & others that there's no lavish 2disc editions with Commentaries ,documentaries on Wells in steel boxes for the fans of this film that looks like it will still be popular...many years into the future...
