5.0 out of 5 starsA gripping tale from a master story teller.
Reviewed in Australia on 3 February 2022
A relative newcomer to John Grisham’s novels, I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in the Jake Brigance series, but A Time for Mercy was. next level, a totally enthralling and immersive experience, I couldn’t put it down.
The depth of the characters and the plot made this book a truly captivating read.
I’ve never visited America’s South, but having read this book, I feel (rightly or wrongly) I have gained a level of understanding of the culture of a small town in Mississippi.
The detail of the courtroom proceedings made me feel as if I were actually there.
I highly recommend this novel and I’ll be downloading my next Grisham novel in about five minutes time.
I’m hooked.

3.0 out of 5 starsMisleading publishing date
Reviewed in Australia on 1 December 2020
This book is ok but far from Grisham's best. Worse though is the publisher's nonsense in describing it as his "latest thriller", referring to the lead character as being "back". In fact, it does not take the reader long to work out that this writing style is decades-old, and steeped in pedantic detail, very dated. Similarly the themes, social assumptions and acceptance of racism, sexism, classism, legal ethics breaches, capital punishment acceptance- all casualised and uncontroversial beyond modern recognition- indicate that this manuscript has being lying dusty somewhere for several decades. And of course the endnote proves it to be so: although in fact Grisham does say that he wrote it 1984 AND it was previously published in 1989. So what are these publishers on about, passing it off as a new publication? Misleading is a mild term: as a lawyer, I would just call it a lie, as the publishers surely knew of the previous edition. I would not have bought it had I known the truth.
Finally in a word to the author: I like your recent works and admire it, and generally don't find it hard to accept your ethical positions which emanate from them. However, I REALLY hope you have had a chance, since 1984, to revisit the heavily loaded issue of adoption: your transactional hardness about the grief and loss, your complete absence of reference to the existential loss to the child, and your rosy happy-ever-after for the adopters is just so weird, given all the data we have on the issue of adoption calamity. Seriously, update.

Eagerly started this novel, at first I was engaged but I felt the impact wane and my interest. It lack depth to me and I found it hard to warm to the characters, particularly Carla, Jake’s wife. I felt like there would be no end in this story, and I was right. No verdict and no real closure. I was disappointed in this story.

2.0 out of 5 stars No more John Grisham for me

It’s a little while ago now that I read “a Time for Mercy” so it’s a bit fuzzy. However, I know I was disappointed.
It was recommended by a friend, but..... uummmm. I have read a few of John Grisham’s books over the years and every time I think why did I bother? Every time! You’d think I’d learn!! But, obviously he is very successful so I must be missing the point.
I find his books very boring and usually without a satisfactory ending.
Perhaps this particular book concentrates too much on all the legalities and tends to wander. And as I am not an American the politics etc confuse/astound/amaze me. And the church going - but then it’s ok to rape and murder etc. Don’t understand.
As usual there is no “winner”. So, I think I have learnt my lesson - no more John Grisham for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Usual Grisham great storytelling.

Jake is forced into defending a young 16 year old boy who admitted to killing a cop who regularly beat his mother, sister and himself.
We meet the usual characters who help Jake including his wife Carla.
The book does not end with a decision but that does not alter the fact that the storytelling is worth the read.

Loved your book and your people. They feel like real people, not characters. Wanted the follow up book to make sure Jake and family are doing well and not bankrupt and not hassled by anyone. But there isn’t one. Reading Sycamore Road and waiting for your next book. Thank You for a great read. Noe

3.0 out of 5 stars Average storyline and much too long
Reviewed in Australia on 18 October 2020

Very long and winded book with over 500 pages with too much narrative about irrelevant material. Could be much tighter storyline, but also an inconclusive ending. Assume there may be another in this series to finalise all the issues in this book - we can only hope so, and much shorter. Normally love John Grisham's books but this was very average.

Good to have a new book from Grisham and as always from him, well written. Good to have another story about Jake Brigance, his family, team, and his perseverance when assisting the underdog when it appears that their case is beyond hope.

A horrible situation and an awful solution, leading to an uncertain future. The big question - was it premeditated murder. An interesting journey through the case, and it’s impact on those involved in a small southern town.

I found the story ok (although a repeat of A time to Kill) but there was no ending. You read through the book with 2 legal cases pending, get to the end and you don't know how either finished. Really a bit of wasted time.
