It starts out in Santorini where both characters are on holiday where they’ve had an amazing time. Adam proposes to Sarah on the trip, this is where the domino effect begins. Sarah rejects his proposal, much to Adam’s surprise & with little explanation. She instead proceeds to end their relationship, completely devastating Adam with her cold demeanor. They currently live together and are unable to break their lease without living in poverty afterwards. So now they are forced to live together for the remaining months - it's torture and you feel it as a reader.
Sarah largely hides herself away, refusing to say any more to Adam about her rejection aside from telling him that he's better off without her. Adam reacts with anger and pain, attempting to soothe his hurt through alcohol and hook-ups. He tries to exorcise his love for Sarah, but nothing works. The story is told in both their points of view; it makes it easier to see the internal struggle each go through during their “complicated” phase in their relationship but sadly it doesn't help the story. There are many surprises along the way and although you get hints and start thinking you know this big dark secret Sarah is hiding, I certainly didn't understand or expect the gravity of it.
Adam is a wonderful character. The weakness here is Sarah. She's just irredeemable, she's cold, moody, indifferent and closed, and in order to understand Adam's love for her, we need to find something about her to like before we believe in their love. I would like to give this more than 3 stars but it took until 90% into the book to find out the secret and for me that is too much angst before a pay-off.
Sarah was a frustrating, overly emotional and an immature character, so it was difficult to relate to her, or feel empathy for her situation. Adam, on the other hand was kind of a confused sweetie who was left wondering, how did this all happen? Part of me was hoping he'd dump her because she certainly didn't deserve him...way too much baggage!
I did finish reading, although I wasn't expecting any surprises, and none came. All in all, it was an ok read in this genre, but pretty predictable.

The tale gets quite tedious as Adam turns to drinking and she sulks whilst they both still love each other.
Evan though she won't tell him the secret she writes diaries and then leaves them around for Adam to read which again does not make sense to me.
The secret is very serious, although I guessed what it was, and I can forgive some of her behaviour because of her age when it happened. I just doubt whether this would have caused the irrationality in her adult life.
Perhaps ok for a fast beach read but overall I would not recommend
I did spot some errors and most peculiarly they seemed to mostly come thick 'n' fast nearer the end (70%+) like the editor got bored with paying attention !! "He sighed and went to out into the hallway".....went to what ?? Then the odd apostrophe error and picture used not pictures and realise not realised, had missed from a sentence, dropped speechmarks/fullstop, a memorial service was arranged for a Monday but a few pages later it was on a Saturday (oops) and copied and not coped was used.
Those aside I'll definitely read another by her when I see one and hope the editor stays awake to finish the job properly next time !!
Any men who may be put off because this is labelled 'Romance', don't be. Chick Lit this ain't, and it should be enjoyed by either sex. I encourage you all to read it.
