Brilliant police and courtroom drama

Although each episode in the first and second series is at least 3 & half hours long - they still engaged my interest throughout . It is the only show that I bought which deals comprehensively with before the crimes are committed , then the police involvement in catching the alleged criminal(s) and gathering evidence and then interviewing and charging them and then it proceeds to the courtroom where the lawyers argue the case and then the jury delivers the verdict and the judge sentences - no wonder each episode runs so long ! The episodes get shorter from 150 minutes in series 3 & 4 to 90 minutes in series 5 & 6 as they spend less time in the courtroom . This box set is great value moneywise and for thinking skills as well as I am not sure whether till the end whether the alleged criminal is found guilty or not .

I am very disappointed with this series for several reasons, including the deeply flawed police characters (1) who repeatedly make poor personal choices and otherwise act badly and irresponsibly and (2) who, on a professional level exercise poor judgement and who fail to fully and adequately complete investigations: in one episode, their failure to investigate a murder co-defendant to yield relevant and material information prior to the jury charge results in the conviction of an innocent and the discharge of the guilty defendant. (3) Moreover, the legal counsel performance is amateurish and markedly substandard, with several episodes in which there is failure to move for separate trials of defendants having competing defences, resulting in each defendant's having TWO adversaries: the prosecution and the other defendant's counsel; failure to object at appropriate points coupled with reliance on happenstance as a poor substitute for standard and adequate pretrial fact-finding and investigation which would be essential to defence of major felonies.

In the course of viewing, I developed a deep and growing dislike of the characters played by both David Hayman and Kate Buffery -- DET SUPT Walker and DI North, respectively.

The script is, charitably, mediocre.

This deeply flawed series could not even begin to hold a candle to Inspector Morse, Inspector Lewis, George Gently and others of this genre.

THEREFORE, I CONCLUDE: MOST DISAPPOINTING AND NOT RECOMMENDED FOR DISCRIMINATING VIEWERS.

Great series, but missing episodes.

Love the series and was looking forward to having them on dvd. However on playing, one of the stories "Closure" is missing the final part (part 5), this seems to be a production issue as all discs are numbered so I can see I have them all. It is a shame as it spoils the set. However did enjoy all other episodes. UPDATE: having checked all DVDs in the set, 2 episodes are missing completely 'Kill the King' and 'Siren', both are named on the dvd box, and the disc labels, both being the second story listed for each disc, but they are not on the discs. It seems the discs can only hold a standard episode, anything longer or extra stories are missed.

I really hope that there are no police officers in real life like Mike Walker, chain-smoking, whiskey guzzling, complete numpty who is always bad tempered. Oh, and corrupt as well as a killer.
This series had some interesting episodes well supported by some actors of sound reputation, but after the first couple of series it declines into mediocrity culminating in sheer dullness in the final episode.
Not one of La Plante's finest. Three stars is generous.

Very Pleased I got this, David Hayman is Great as Mike Walker Trying to Investigate Murders that have a Disturbing Pattern about them, He has Help from Kate Buffary and Victoria Smurfit to help bring Justice to the Victims with a Great Cast like Rhys Ifans to name a few, Compelling Drama from lynda La Plant.
