A mysterious stranger known as 'The Wolf' leaves an infant with the sisters of Santo Spirito. A tiny silver key hidden in her wrappings is the only clue to the child's identity and so begins a story as intriguing and beautiful as the city of Florence itself. Belinda Alexandra's new novel, Tuscan Rose, is set in Italy during the time of Mussolini. This richly woven tale of passion, love, longing, witchcraft and magic promises to be everything her readers love and more.

I search out WWII based fiction and have read many books centred on France, Britain and America during those sad times. The Italian perspective was insightful and educational. The characters were all well presented. The writer’s research is obviously thorough and commendable. The book took me back mentally to Florence and Fiesole, though my visits have been during the past 25 years. I can remember reading plaques in several towns honouring the brave Partisani who lost their lives fighting to achieve peace. I was brought to tears reading the names of whole families cruelly massacred. A mother and her teenage daughter, and so many women from a village who had taken up the fight and cause because their menfolk had been dragged away. The cruelty advised of was hideous. Society needs to know of terrible things from past wars to strive to avoid it again. Wholeheartedly recommend The Tuscan Rose.

It all starts with an unnamed newborn girl being delivered to the nuns for safekeeping and follows that girl's life through tragedy, cruelty, war, betrayal, grief, love and so much more. You will weep, you will gasp and you will sigh at this incredible tale of one woman's life.

The life of Rosa had so many twists and turns that one couldn't stop following it. The history of life in Florence during the time of Musolini and towards the end of the war was illuminating. The story is certainly a chilling criticism of war.

I really liked the mixture of the characters within the story, but found the main character a bit over the top in some parts.

I love Belinda Alexandra's novels. You get taken away to a saga of romance intrigue and always a bit of last pages of the story coming to a conclusive ending.
A great read.

Compelling, fascinating and rich in period detail. Belinda Alexandra brings Florence alive during WWII. A fascinating story woven around complex and believable characters. I read it while staying in Florence and the novel featuring local streets, hills and landmarks added an extra dimension to the holiday.

Loved this amazing story that has a bit of everything and follows a young girls life through the generations. Belinda Alexandra is yet to disappoint, always enjoy her books and never want them to finish.

Wow - the best book I've read this year

I loved this book, it was totally engrossing and I loved the heroine, Rosa. I'm not going to go into the story as other reviews have covered the main points. It was a very interesting book and some of it is set in a period in Italian history that I knew very little about - I knew about Mussolini and that Italy split with Germany and joined with the Allies sometime in the middle of WW2, but knew nothing about how this impacted on the people and how dangerous living during this period was. Some reviewers thought it very improbable that the dreamy, naive Rosa would develop into the character that she becomes by the end of the book, but I have to disagree with them. I don't think anyone can foresee how you would behave living through such a tumultuous.period in history - and maybe the bravest people are the ones who are terrified but still act on their beliefs and principles, and that's the sort of person Rosa seemed to be to me. Even though she did things she never thought she would be capable of, her intrinsic goodness always remained. There is some 'magic' in the book and I found it charming and it added to my enjoyment, but even if 'magic' isn't your thing, I don't think it's such a central part that it really detracts from the rest of the book in any way. My Mum was a Florentine and I've been to Florence countless times - I suppose this also added to my enjoyment of the book as I was able to visualise some of the places mentioned, but it also opened my eyes to the bravery of the partisans and to the horror of being occupied by the German Army. Read this book, even if you don't love it like I do, you will learn about a period in history that is very rarely talked about.

Became more gripping as Italy descended into war.

this is my second of belinda Alexandra's novels and probably the more interesting, particularly as we don't often read about Italy's lead up to war and the devastating effects it had on the people. The heroine's character was slightly implausible,as someone who seemed so weak when it came to the affairs of the heart and her inability to look after herself in the early days seems an unlikely candidate for all her later heroics. An enjoyable read and as mentioned all the more interesting because of its description of the war in that country.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book it was very well written and thoroughly researched. It covered a piece of history that I was not overly familiar with. I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in dictatorship. I am glad that I am lucky enough to live in a democracy.

A very good novel

As someone who loves Italy and is familiar with their lifestyle and also old enough to remember the war and all that fascism meant, I found this book very well written and a good story which could well be read as a real life biography of the main character. The story moves well and unnecessary periods are skipped over but there is no loss of continuity.

Interesting but incredible.

Although the background to the war in Italy was fascinating and enlightening I found the plot too incredible to be believed at many junctures in the story, I simply could not suspend disbelief which rather spoiled it.
