not one of my favourites
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 August 2009Verified Purchase
As with the other early series of the great Two Ronnies the format is more of a variety show than the later shows.
This is not my favourite of the Two Ronnies series, mainly because there are only two of the iconic musical numbers that I love so much - they are "Jehosophat and Jones" and "The Short and Fat Minstrel Show".
There is no running serial though series 3 either.
There are, however, a number of skits on the top TV shows of the time (Upstairs Downstairs, Onedin Line, etc), as well as political and social comments. As always there are the usual "news" items at the beginning and end of each show and Mr Corbett's monolgues.
Pan's People prance about for 4 or 5 minutes, and there is a song for each episode from a different singer or group.
Many of the jokes are not to the standard of the current PC treads, but as a study into the sociological and political aspects of the early 1970s (27 September 1973 - 3 January 1974) this box set is a gem.
Not one of the best series, but still worth having.

Making Progress
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 June 2013Verified Purchase
Series 3 is an improvement from the first two, while not reaching the classic standard of their later work. Most of the sketches are funny and one can see how they were developing the format which would lead to a greater success. The best items were the musical sketches, including a third outing for Jehosophat and Jones. There is no running story, put each episode features a send-up of a popular drama, from the remembered, Upstairs Downstairs, to the almost forgotten, Jason King.
Pan's People are regulars, strutting the stuff in an attractive way, and each week's second pop item is provided by such performers as Dawn, Dana and the New Seekers, not all of whom have stood the test of time.
I am looking forward to further improvement when watching series 4.

Still quite good

I was a fan of Ronnie Barker when he was on the radio (or wireless as we called it then) and later when he worked with Ronnie Corbett. One wintry, snow-filled day in 1970 I thumbed a lift to work instead of taking the train. Ronnie Barker picked me up. I hadn't realised I had met him before, and still didn't recognise this avuncular fellow in a nice warm Rover car. My wife reminded me later that he came to the same church. He told me he was working on a new series with Ronnie Corbett, and I assume it was the first series of The Two Ronnies. He dropped me off, and drove on to the television studios.A nice man.
We've only seen one episode of series 3, and it raised several smiles but few, if any, belly laughs. After 40 years or so we enjoyed seeing first two series again, and will enjoy the rest of series 3 from time to time.

A enjoyable collection although they hadn't quite got to their best but still great entertainment, certainly something to watch and enjoy if there's nothing on TV.
