4.0 out of 5 starsThis is not for the faint hearted.
Reviewed in Australia on 25 August 2021
Having heard that Colleen Hoover delivers some very emotional works, when I needed to use the letter V for a book challenge, this one seemed like as good a place as any to start.

Honeslty. I have no words.

In the beggining I was sceptical. Mainly because Colleen used a word that meant an alcoholic beverage to describe someone eyes matching their tie without actually giving the colour. When I read that my hope for her hype plumted.

This isn't a romance, and when I realised it wasn't, my expectation changed.

When that happened, I was able to sink myself in this book. My emotions ran high. There were times I was disgusted in what had happened, there were moments I swooned, and moments I had to put my kindle down. Time when I thought I knew exactly how it would end.

I will neither confirm or deny my suspicions, though I wasn't entirely off the mark. That in itself shows that reading Colleen Hoover was worth it. That this book was worth taking the time for.

2.0 out of 5 starsSoft core porn mystery written like a teen drama

SPOILER FREE REVIEW FOR THOSE HAVING DOUBTS

I yielded to the hype. I heard "pace, thriller, insane twists" and I thought it was true - I wont listen to the masses again.
I am the wrong audience for this book in many ways. Romance is not my bag; I also took at face value the 'thriller and 'mystery' tags and I shouldn't have.
Even removing those personal preferences from my review - this is still 'meh' at best.

The storyline had enough pace but the plot felt seriously underdeveloped and the writing quality was very Y.A except for the scenes where she talks you though a seeming unrelenting amount of bl*wjobs and while I fine with reading about sex when it works in to the story line - I guess i'm self-aware enough to not be turned on by trauma-bond sex.
I didn't realise I was reading the (exposition only) twist because I spent the entire novel waiting for the author to get to the bit where ..... *twist ending* happened.

I guess I was expecting more depth- somewhere, anywhere! Or at least for things to not to be so obvious. To me this is soft core porn, mystery written like a teen drama.

It took me three days to read this book maybe I was afraid to get the end of it our I don't want to finish, but you didn’t disappoint, what a fantastic book Colleen, you never stop surprising us.

You’re trying to make us your tribe all crazy, because you accomplished that you know, from romance to dark is a significant change, leave this to Tarryn, we used to that from her but not from you, in a good way!

Can’t stop thinking about this book, is 4 am, and I have to work tomorrow morning and is your falt woman.

Disturbing amazing written, well done!

I Could give 10 stars, but I’m going to give 5.

Congrats!!!

This book was fantastic! It started off with a bam (literally) and the pace never faltered or slowed. I love the way it was written. I love the twists and how I couldn’t stop thinking about the characters when I’d close the chapter for the day. Highly recommend this great read.

I haven't read any of Colleen Hoover's romance novels (not my thing), so this is the first novel I've read by this author. Before coming to it, I'd started and stalled on a couple of books which just weren't gripping me. So, full marks to this one, as it pulled me in immediately and didn't let go.

Having got to the end, I saw from the acknowledgements that this was an indie project by the author, as she wanted to branch out and try a new genre (and a publisher wasn't involved). First, what a shame that an already-published writer can't branch out in this way - and what a loss for publishers. Psychological thrillers are hard to nail - but I felt that Colleen Hoover achieved the right balance of intrigue, chills and pacing; this would make an amazing movie. There were a couple of things that stretched the boundaries of credibility a little. Spoilers ahead, so stop reading now if you don't want to know more ...

One was the medical aspect; physiologically and medically it would have been very difficult for Verity to pull off what she did. The fact that a private nurse, spending so long with the patient wouldn't twig also stretches the bounds of credibility. The ending was good - not mind-blowingly good (but I feel very few thrillers with a 'twist' truly deliver something jaw-dropping). It felt a little contrived but was satisfying enough. Personally, I would have preferred something darker - either around Jeremy or Lowen (at one point, I thought Lowen's past sleepwalking was going to pan out into something creepier). All in all though, this was a great psychological thriller - certainly every bit as good as Behind Closed Doors (which I thought was very overrated). It's a genre I hope this author continues with - and I hope for her next novel she finds a publisher, as they will probably help elevate her work in this area further. I also think the price of the paperback should be reduced (I bought the Kindle version - but £12-odd for a paperback isn't realistic). All in all, I'm looking forward to seeing what Colleen Hoover comes out with next, if she sticks to this genre.

2.0 out of 5 stars Maybe I am one of the few who didn't like the book

TW: Do not read if you are pregnant.
► mother being cruel to her children
► mother wants and tried to kill her children

Since I found out CoHo books (with the help of another fellow blogger) I haven't missed a book and I'm always excited to read her new book. This one didn't differ from the others, although I'm reading it way later it was published. That's because I was curious but skeptical at the same time what a thriller book written by New Adult author will look like.

Maybe I am one of the few who didn't like the book and I have my reasons.

Firstly, another author finishing a series of dead or injured author is a big NO-NO for me. As much as I love (adore, worship and other great words) Millennium series by Stieg Larsson, I will never, never, ever put my hands on one of the 3 books written by David Lagercrantz that 'complete' the series. The last book from the series is The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest and that is that. Everything written after this book is for profits only, money-making and poorly attempt to make a name on behalf of somebody, who already is a great name in the industry.

Verity's plot is written around this kind of thing and it pulls me back from the book from the very beginning. Lowen is suspense books author. Her books didn't reach the top place in the best-seller chart, she barely manages to meet the ends. When one day, out of the blue, she received an offer to write the last three books to finish the series of the bestselling author Verity Crawford. Lowen is drawn back. She doesn't consider herself that good to write a bestseller and she was ready to reject the offer. Jeremy Crawford, Verity's husband, steps in and persuades her to write the books by telling her that actually Verity got inspired by Lowen's books and she is considered the best choice to finish the series.

Secondly, I know that this book is meant to be dark and disgusting maybe, but it should come with trigger warning at least. I'm 5 months pregnant as for today ( April 2020). With my partner, we tried to conceive for nearly two years and we almost started to consider IVF when I found out that I'm pregnant. My first three months was a nightmare and not because I went through all the downsides of pregnancy, to be fair - I'm having quite an easy pregnancy with no nausea and etc, but I was quite scared every time I went to the toilet because there was a possibility of that red spot on my panties.

You can't imagine how anxious I felt after the descriptive scene in which Verity is trying to abort her babies with metal wire at the toilet because Jeremy loves the babies more than he loves her. What a stupid piece of flesh you have to be to do this? Honestly, I went and throw up. This may sound good for the author because she did her job well and cause some reaction from the reader, but is this the reaction she wanted to provoke? To throw my insides out?

‘He kissed my stomach and looked up at me. I reached down and teased at strands of his hair with my fingers. “Do you love them?” He smiled because he thought I wanted him to say yes. “I love them more than anything.” “More than me?” He stopped smiling. He kept his hand on my stomach, but he scooted up, sliding an arm under my neck. “Different from you,” he said, kissing my cheek. “Different, yes. But more? Is your love for them more intense than your love for me?” His eyes scanned mine, and I was hoping he would laugh and say, “Absolutely not.” But he didn’t laugh. He looked at me with nothing but honesty and said, “Yes.” Really? His reply crushed me. Suffocated me. Killed me.’

‘He fell asleep while I was in the bathroom, attempting to abort his daughters with a wire hanger. I tried for half an hour until my stomach started to cramp and blood was running down my leg. I was certain more would follow. I climbed into bed, waiting for the miscarriage. My arms were shaking. My legs were numb from the squatting. My stomach hurt and I wanted to puke, but I didn’t move because I wanted to be in the bed with him when it happened. I wanted to wake him up, frantic, and show him the blood. I wanted him to panic, to worry, to feel bad for me, to cry for me. To cry for me.’

Right, after these paragraphs I had to take a break from this book for a while. I do want to finish it because I'm curious about what is staying behind the Crawford family tragedies and Verity's car wreck.

'Some families are lucky enough to never experience a single tragedy. But then there are those families that seem to have tragedies waiting on the back burner. What can go wrong, goes wrong. And then gets worse.'

After a  week break from Verity, I finally finished it. It is a good read and proper book for the author's first attempts in this genre. Quite predictable, though. I knew what the manuscript is from the very beginning, but still, the book was interesting, kept me engaged till the end and although I knew what will happen and all these disgusting scenes, I still wanted to finish it. (I skipped some parts with descriptive plans how to kill an infant).

I do enjoy the book in the book thing. We have the story told by Lowen's point of view, but we have the Verity autobiography manuscript that gives us another perspective of the events (a great part of which I skipped without regrets).
I’m beginning to think Verity writes from a villainous point of view because she’s a villain. Being evil is all she knows.

1.0 out of 5 stars Predictable nonsense - my first, and definitely last, Hoover book

I had such high hopes for this book – based on all the amazing reviews. OMG - what a let-down it is.

I should have realised that after the contrived opening scene, things were not going to get better. If, having read Chapter 2, you too predicted the ‘story’ was going to turn out like it does at this point I would give up now: don’t continue – you’ll only regret it if you do.

The ‘plot’ gets even more predictable the more you read on.
My advice: stop now and congratulate yourself on not wasting your time on this trash, unlike me who did make it (just about) to the end and cursed myself for losing hours of my life on this nonsense – hours that I will never get back.

Some reviewers say that they couldn’t read it because it was so shocking – shockingly awful, I would say. Every other page is filled with the main characters having sex – which becomes so dull and trite that I would just lie back, think of England and wait for it to finish.

Never again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read, creepy, twisted suspenseful novel from Queen Colleen!

Wow, wow, wow! Colleen has never let me down and she certainly didn’t start with this book! Verity is all consuming and I could not put it down!! It’s suspenseful, eerie, tragic, dark, twisted, heartbreaking, sad, disturbing and emotional! I got chills while reading and felt creeped out and disgusted at times from these characters. That’s how I know it was such a great book! This story has twists and turns you do not see coming and I think it should definitely be turned into a movie! 😉 😉 nudge nudge Honestly it was absolutely phenomenal and I’ve been waiting for Colleen Hoover to write something like this since she wrote Too Late! Her mind is obviously all kinds of messed up but it lets her create these types of story’s and I love it! The fact she can go back and forth between heartwarming, deep, raw romance novels to gritty and dark books like this, is a true testament to her writing ability! I hope she never stops creating these masterpieces for her readers!
