4.0 out of 5 starsThis is not for the faint hearted.
Reviewed in Australia on 25 August 2021
Having heard that Colleen Hoover delivers some very emotional works, when I needed to use the letter V for a book challenge, this one seemed like as good a place as any to start.

Honeslty. I have no words.

In the beggining I was sceptical. Mainly because Colleen used a word that meant an alcoholic beverage to describe someone eyes matching their tie without actually giving the colour. When I read that my hope for her hype plumted.

This isn't a romance, and when I realised it wasn't, my expectation changed.

When that happened, I was able to sink myself in this book. My emotions ran high. There were times I was disgusted in what had happened, there were moments I swooned, and moments I had to put my kindle down. Time when I thought I knew exactly how it would end.

I will neither confirm or deny my suspicions, though I wasn't entirely off the mark. That in itself shows that reading Colleen Hoover was worth it. That this book was worth taking the time for.

2.0 out of 5 starsSoft core porn mystery written like a teen drama

SPOILER FREE REVIEW FOR THOSE HAVING DOUBTS

I yielded to the hype. I heard "pace, thriller, insane twists" and I thought it was true - I wont listen to the masses again.
I am the wrong audience for this book in many ways. Romance is not my bag; I also took at face value the 'thriller and 'mystery' tags and I shouldn't have.
Even removing those personal preferences from my review - this is still 'meh' at best.

The storyline had enough pace but the plot felt seriously underdeveloped and the writing quality was very Y.A except for the scenes where she talks you though a seeming unrelenting amount of bl*wjobs and while I fine with reading about sex when it works in to the story line - I guess i'm self-aware enough to not be turned on by trauma-bond sex.
I didn't realise I was reading the (exposition only) twist because I spent the entire novel waiting for the author to get to the bit where ..... *twist ending* happened.

I guess I was expecting more depth- somewhere, anywhere! Or at least for things to not to be so obvious. To me this is soft core porn, mystery written like a teen drama.

Verity by Colleen Hoover is a gripping thriller that kept me hooked right from the get-go. I never quite knew what was happening, as the story twisted and turned, keeping me on the edge of my seat and guessing the whole way. The story is clever, suspenseful, and intense- and is a little different from other books that I have read by Ms. Hoover. This has got to be up there with my favourites, if not my all time favourite of hers, so far! I won’t go into the storyline here; I think you are better off diving in blind and letting Ms. Hoover ad the story surprise you as everything unfolds- plus I wouldn’t want to give away any spoilers.
If you love a gripping, suspenseful story that twists and turns and leaves you a little unbalanced and unsure of what’s going on, while delivering a cleverly crafted mystery- then this is definitely the story for you!
I can’t wait to see what Ms. Hoover does next!

Thank you, Ms. Hoover!

I have read so many reviews on this book, it seems it is marmite. The negative reviews made me pass it over a couple of times when deciding on my next read. But I couldn't quite shake the ones that loved it. I was definitely disturbed by this one. The worst part is the questions the ending left me with. Did she or didn't she???

The book within a book style was intriguing. Following Lowen's reaction to the horrors of Verity's mind was fascinating. Every time she put the manuscript down I was on tenterhooks waiting for her to read the next chapter.

I did feel than Lowen's storyline could have been developed a little more. Her childhood and relationship with her mum were glossed over, almost in passing - but I wanted to know more! Same with Crew, I wanted to know more about his state of mind. Was he ok?

Also, the ending felt a bit rushed 🤷🏻‍♀️

Overall, this was a good read. I was gripped for large parts of it.

Why hadn’t I read this earlier. Also, I’m wishing I hadn’t read it so I can read it again for the first time.

This was mind boggling to say the least. It was written so strategically I’m slightly mad at the deception.

Lowen is a complex person but one who had appeared to land on her feet. I felt her struggles and really was cheering for her when she landed being co-author as she needed a break and the money it would seem. Jeremy is a very charming man, looking after his injured wife and grieving all at the same time.

There was so much about this that I was like you wouldn’t do that and nah that doesn’t happen. But I was to captivated by the storyline and just found it so bold, creepy and gripping. I just couldn’t put it down and just never wanted it to end, I was buddy reading this and it’s fair to say we didn’t stick to the schedule.

There were a lot of twists and turns, some I guessed but that ending (chef’s kiss) was just jaw dropping.

This is now head to head one of my favourites along with It Ends With Us. Total different genres but both left an impression.

Amazingly well written and I love the character development. Not too spicy, a little creepy at times. Just the best! Read if you can stomach some creepy house action.

Was surprised to see some of the negative reviews on here as I was just blown away by the storyline and captivated the whole way! Think this is the kind of book you will either love or hate, it's for a very specific audience!

I love everything that Colleen writes and I did love this, the writing style I love was there and I connected with each and every character. Parts were very difficult to read at times but, were vital to the storyline so I continued. The story was heartbreaking at times and also very thought provoking. It must be said this is not Colleens usual genre but that said she nailed it. I dropped a star because the ending for me left too many questions, usually at the end of a read I can figure out why it ended as it did or even reason with myself and work it out, but I couldn’t with this read....too many loose ends and questions, that said it was an amazing well written book and I thoroughly enjoyed it

Book review: LOVED this book! I read it in 3 sittings which is great going for me just now.
🍃
The basis of the story is of a Lowen, struggling writer being given the job of finishing bestselling author Verity Crawfords remaining books that she has been unable to complete.
🍃
The story is so fast paced, so cleverly constructed taking you into extracts from Verity’s notes back to present time with Lowen.
🍃
I had read reviews that there were unnecessary sex scenes ... which i totally disagree with as each provides the intensity to the relationships in question.
🍃
I would say that the parts I did find disturbing were the ‘violent’ events with the children, but again, each was necessary to the storyline and character detail.
🍃
I read this book in the evenings and honestly I was scared to go downstairs in the dark due to the sheer terror that Colleen Hoover managed to distill in me. There are about 4 occasions when I truly felt a shiver going down my spine
🍃
The twist is fabulous. Although I’m still trying to work out in my head what really happened......
🍃
Really hope that Colleen Hoover sticks to this genre! Rating
