4.0 out of 5 starsThis is not for the faint hearted.
Reviewed in Australia on 25 August 2021
Having heard that Colleen Hoover delivers some very emotional works, when I needed to use the letter V for a book challenge, this one seemed like as good a place as any to start.

Honeslty. I have no words.

In the beggining I was sceptical. Mainly because Colleen used a word that meant an alcoholic beverage to describe someone eyes matching their tie without actually giving the colour. When I read that my hope for her hype plumted.

This isn't a romance, and when I realised it wasn't, my expectation changed.

When that happened, I was able to sink myself in this book. My emotions ran high. There were times I was disgusted in what had happened, there were moments I swooned, and moments I had to put my kindle down. Time when I thought I knew exactly how it would end.

I will neither confirm or deny my suspicions, though I wasn't entirely off the mark. That in itself shows that reading Colleen Hoover was worth it. That this book was worth taking the time for.

SPOILER FREE REVIEW FOR THOSE HAVING DOUBTS

I yielded to the hype. I heard "pace, thriller, insane twists" and I thought it was true - I wont listen to the masses again.
I am the wrong audience for this book in many ways. Romance is not my bag; I also took at face value the 'thriller and 'mystery' tags and I shouldn't have.
Even removing those personal preferences from my review - this is still 'meh' at best.

The storyline had enough pace but the plot felt seriously underdeveloped and the writing quality was very Y.A except for the scenes where she talks you though a seeming unrelenting amount of bl*wjobs and while I fine with reading about sex when it works in to the story line - I guess i'm self-aware enough to not be turned on by trauma-bond sex.
I didn't realise I was reading the (exposition only) twist because I spent the entire novel waiting for the author to get to the bit where ..... *twist ending* happened.

I guess I was expecting more depth- somewhere, anywhere! Or at least for things to not to be so obvious. To me this is soft core porn, mystery written like a teen drama.

Why did the author cross her genres? To get to the other side of course! That was so cheesy... nothing like this book! I am a "guess the ending" kind of reader... each twist and each turn I get wild haired ideas of what might happen. Sometimes I'm right, sometimes I'm not. For the record I was WAAAY off on this ending and I'm so glad!

I won't give away anything that happens in the book other than to say I don't know what to believe anymore, take that as you will.

Colleen Hoover, your venture into the darkness has been amazing, I'm not sure if I should be thrilled or scared for you. What it does confirm is that you are far from mediocre, and I will most definitely read your shopping list on toilet paper.

Verity by Colleen Hoover is a gripping thriller that kept me hooked right from the get-go. I never quite knew what was happening, as the story twisted and turned, keeping me on the edge of my seat and guessing the whole way. The story is clever, suspenseful, and intense- and is a little different from other books that I have read by Ms. Hoover. This has got to be up there with my favourites, if not my all time favourite of hers, so far! I won’t go into the storyline here; I think you are better off diving in blind and letting Ms. Hoover ad the story surprise you as everything unfolds- plus I wouldn’t want to give away any spoilers.
If you love a gripping, suspenseful story that twists and turns and leaves you a little unbalanced and unsure of what’s going on, while delivering a cleverly crafted mystery- then this is definitely the story for you!
I can’t wait to see what Ms. Hoover does next!

Thank you, Ms. Hoover!

Wow, first book I read of Colleen Hoover. It had me gripping the kindle till the early hours of the morning. It was a real head spin. Twists and turn, bits of information that got you thinking one way only to start thinking another. Some things I didn't see coming. I don't quite know how I feel about the ending or the character Verity. It has definitely made me want to read other books from the author.

Here's one thing I've learned definitively through the purchase and reading of this book: DO NOT RELY ON CUSTOMER REVIEWS WHEN DECIDING ON BOOK PURCHASES.
I am FLOORED at the amount of positive reviews this book has received. An overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars....? HOW?
I'm not talking about story or content, as many of the few negative reviews there are focuses on the disturbing content. I'm talking about the absolute mediocrity of the writing. For all the positive reviews, I was expecting some exceptional writing, character developments and plot twists and it just was not there. I disliked every character. There was just nothing for me to like about any of them. They all made questionable, illogical and very unrealistic decisions. I mean, I expect to suspend my belief of "reality" when reading books or watching movies, but this was excessive to the point where I totally checked out of the story and was just reading for the sake of finishing the book.
As for the "disturbing content", again, it was just not there for me. Honestly, I picked up this book with the intention of indulging in some sexy (okay, maybe smutty) thrills and chills. And there were sex scenes. A fair amount. Of nondescriptive, repetitive, vanilla sex. That became annoyingly obligatory and prudishly lacking. And yes, there is some violence against children and I can understand why some parents would be turned off by this. However, again, it was so vanilla to me, and due to the inferior writing, was not as horrific as it seems like it should have been. I am a parent. I sleep fine at night after reading this.
I am not familiar with this author and I am not an avid reader of "romance" (ie, sex) novels, but I do appreciate a heavy sprinkling of adult content in my books. If you're looking for something well written, that will creep you out and turn you on, this one is not gonna float you boat. If you aren't picky with your prose (or particularly bold in the bedroom) and want a fast, easy read, go for it.

Verity by Colleen Hoover

About the book

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity's notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn't expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity's recollection of the night their family was forever altered.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen's feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife's words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

My Take

Verity is dark, twisted and disturbing, yet a terrific page turner.
It's the story of Lowen Ashleigh, a small time author who has run out of money following her mother's cancer treatment. Lowen's literary agent Corey, who was also her ex, brings her an unusual offer - an offer to complete three books in the Virtue series of the best selling author, Verity Crawford.

As luck would have it, Lowen meets Jeremy Crawford, Verity's husband, by accident, even before she meets him for the publishers meeting. Initially, Lowen has her own doubts, but Jeremy convinces her that she can do it. Lowen is also desperately in need of money, and has been evicted from her rented apart ment. So she gets invited to stay over at the Crawford's house, a big sprawling property overseeing a lake, to go over Verity's office and plan the outlines for the forthcoming novels.

As Lowen starts living in their house, she learns about the tragedies this family has gone through. They have recently lost their twin girls, and now Verity is indisposed following a car wreck. Crew, their five year old boy, seems to be the only thing that brings life to the house.

While going through Verity's work, Lowen finds a secret autobiography written by Verity, and she can't resist the temptation of reading it, convincing herself that she will be better able to understand how Verity's mind works, which will help her complete the remaining novels in the series.

However, the autobiography turns out to be a dark, twisted and sordid tale, and Lowen begins questioning everything that is happening around her. At the same time, she begins noticing weird things in the house that Jeremy doesn't seem to notice at all.

The story flits between Lowen's POV and the chapters between Verity's autobiography. The description keeps us hooked and tense throughout as we keep wondering what exactly happened. The language is lucid and flowing, yet simple. At one point I sort of predicted the end, but I was wrong. So the twist at the end was definitely a surprise for me.

There are some very sensitive and graphic scenes described, so the reader has to be mentally prepared to read it. And there is lots and lots of sex. Some of which, I felt, was unnecessary, and distracting. Some part seemed a bit stretched, slightly unbelievable, but still it takes the story forward.

But over all, I loved this edge of the seat gripping tale. It kept me awake till I had read the last word. I rate it 3.5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deliciously dark and exceedingly clever thriller

I don’t even know where to start with reviewing this deliciously dark and creepy book. I would say it’s unlike anything I’ve ever read before except it certainly has some Jane Eyre vibes about it and some eerie gothic undertones. But I think even Charlotte Brontë would be turning in her grave at some of the graphic content. I however loved it…..

This is not a book for anyone of a sensitive nature or who is prudish about sex. Verity is obsessed with her husband and her appetite for him is voracious to the exclusion of all others including her own children with him.

This book messed with my head, the paranoia set in as soon as Lowen arrived at their home to finish Verity’s series of novels. Lowen had already intrigued me with her reaction to witnessing a fatal accident so I was already on the back foot and unsure about how her mind worked. Verity I thought would be easier to figure out especially as the author cleverly inserts entries from her diary manuscript. Wow was I wrong, these are as Verity herself says “Chronics”. All the characters are prone to chronic tragedy and are messed up in their own individual ways.

Like a bad car crash this is a mangled wreck of lives that you just can’t help but look at, wondering if anyone would survive and if they do you know they will never be the same.

Then I got to the ending and realised that even though I was at the scene I hadn’t seen a damn thing. I can honestly say this book is up there as one of my favourite shock twists of an ending of all time, along with I let you go by Clare Mackintosh.

Summary:
When Lowen is asked to write the next three books in bestselling author Verity’s series, she’s terrified at the prospect of stepping into such big shoes. But when she realises just why Verity can’t finish this series, and she uncovers the autobiography that Verity had been working on with all her secrets, she realises just how much trouble she is truly in.

My Thoughts:
Colleen Hoover has done it again, but this time with a bit of a twist.
I didn’t expect to love these characters as much as I did but I found myself completely enwrapped in their stories. The twists and the turns, the tone of the writing, the little chills that rippled up my spine, this book gave me everything I want in a thriller while also gifting me that sprinkle of CoHo romance that I wanted.
If you love Colleen Hoover’s work, you’ll love this one. If you love a bit of dark thriller, you will also love this one. Honestly, you’ll probably just love this one.
