4.0 out of 5 starsThis is not for the faint hearted.
Reviewed in Australia on 25 August 2021
Having heard that Colleen Hoover delivers some very emotional works, when I needed to use the letter V for a book challenge, this one seemed like as good a place as any to start.

Honeslty. I have no words.

In the beggining I was sceptical. Mainly because Colleen used a word that meant an alcoholic beverage to describe someone eyes matching their tie without actually giving the colour. When I read that my hope for her hype plumted.

This isn't a romance, and when I realised it wasn't, my expectation changed.

When that happened, I was able to sink myself in this book. My emotions ran high. There were times I was disgusted in what had happened, there were moments I swooned, and moments I had to put my kindle down. Time when I thought I knew exactly how it would end.

I will neither confirm or deny my suspicions, though I wasn't entirely off the mark. That in itself shows that reading Colleen Hoover was worth it. That this book was worth taking the time for.

2.0 out of 5 starsSoft core porn mystery written like a teen drama

SPOILER FREE REVIEW FOR THOSE HAVING DOUBTS

I yielded to the hype. I heard "pace, thriller, insane twists" and I thought it was true - I wont listen to the masses again.
I am the wrong audience for this book in many ways. Romance is not my bag; I also took at face value the 'thriller and 'mystery' tags and I shouldn't have.
Even removing those personal preferences from my review - this is still 'meh' at best.

The storyline had enough pace but the plot felt seriously underdeveloped and the writing quality was very Y.A except for the scenes where she talks you though a seeming unrelenting amount of bl*wjobs and while I fine with reading about sex when it works in to the story line - I guess i'm self-aware enough to not be turned on by trauma-bond sex.
I didn't realise I was reading the (exposition only) twist because I spent the entire novel waiting for the author to get to the bit where ..... *twist ending* happened.

I guess I was expecting more depth- somewhere, anywhere! Or at least for things to not to be so obvious. To me this is soft core porn, mystery written like a teen drama.

I couldn’t physically put this book down. Have you ever felt like you just couldn’t read fast enough; like you’re simultaneously both wanting the book to last a long time, but also you can’t get the information quick enough? Yep. This book right here.

Mystery plus thriller plus romance equals a fantastic read, and I loved that at the end... You. Still. Couldn’t. Be. Sure. Well done! Highly recommended.

This story was truly remarkable. Colleen Hoover has done it again! Channelling her inner psychopath to write this fantastic novel, Colleen manages to draw the reader in, then BAM! You are done. No other author will ever compete, until you successfully navigate the book hangover that ensues. Well done, Cawwwleeeeeennnn. Well done indeed.

It took me three days to read this book maybe I was afraid to get the end of it our I don't want to finish, but you didn’t disappoint, what a fantastic book Colleen, you never stop surprising us.

You’re trying to make us your tribe all crazy, because you accomplished that you know, from romance to dark is a significant change, leave this to Tarryn, we used to that from her but not from you, in a good way!

Can’t stop thinking about this book, is 4 am, and I have to work tomorrow morning and is your falt woman.

Disturbing amazing written, well done!

I Could give 10 stars, but I’m going to give 5.

Congrats!!!

I haven’t read any books from this author before but the 5 star reviews influenced me. I usually like the Romantic Comedy genre but this book was a page turner. Well done to the author (after reading her post notes that it’s a deviation from her usual genre). I’ll be updating myself with her previous works because her talent is obvious.

Unnerved doesn't begin to sum up how I feel having finished this book. Also kind of needing a shower... although less so that some I have read - *cough* Gone Girl *cough*. This is one of those books that makes you doubt yourself and whether what you think you know is actually true. I found the atmosphere to be realistically creepy and the situation really felt for Lowen as she becomes steadily more paranoid, never quite sure that it isn't her mind playing tricks on her. The multi-faceted lies and manipulations are excellently shaped and laid out.

I'm not going to say that I enjoyed the diary excerpts; they are deeply, deeply disturbing. However, they felt real and whilst I certainly couldn't empathise with the person behind them, they are very good at forcing you to see through her eyes at the world. It is frightening at points and it is easy to get sucked into the fear and the disgust that Lowen is feeling. Characterisations are generally quite well done, although the gratuitous and constant sex became tedious rather quickly. I felt like I was getting to know all of the characters, with all their faults and whilst I wouldn't want to go on holiday with any of them, they definitely felt real. Each and every one of these characters is flawed and each and every one feels utterly real.

It is also a realistic glimpse at the very nature of grief and loss without ever becoming preachy, with all three adult characters grieving for someone close to them in very different ways. The concept of grieving for someone who you don't particularly like all that much is also woven into the narrative quite well, and how that gives a different but no less raw experience. I did however think more could have been done with the child; at times he seemed to be there just for the cuteness factor and his reactions and interpretations of what is going on could have been utilised to a far greater extent. I liked the kid, but that's all that I can say about him. He's in therapy, then he's not in therapy, he doesn't mention the girls and he loves his mother and he's back in therapy. There's no emotional pull with him though, it's all surface platitudes.

A full star gets knocked off however due to the constant use of sex as a blunt implement throughout this novel. It's almost every other page and it got really boring. If it's not Verity being screwed by Jeremy in her diary, it's Lowen thinking about screwing Jeremy or actually screwing Jeremy. I'm no prude and I have no issue with sexual content in books, but the over-reliance on it here really did work against it. I could see that it was part of how Hoover is building Verity's character, but it did very little for me. It's a pity because otherwise I flew through this dark and nasty book at a rate of knots, desperate to find out just what was going on and just as confused and horrified as Lowen.

I am a massive Colleen Hoover fan and when I heard she had written something completely different I was sceptical that she could pull it off but I take my thought back as this woman has written something that I could never imagine and it’s pure genius. I have never read a book that makes we wake up in the middle of the night to check the end of my bed but Colleen has achieved this. I read this book with anxiety, fear and pure horror at what I was reading... and when you think you have worked out the plot BAM a bend in the road appears. I have not been able to put this book down, I will say this with pure confidence this is the best book I have read if 2018! Well done Colleen hats off to you you took a gamble and it paid off... if you want a book like nothing you have read before this is the one!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't see that coming

Well I can honestly say I didn't expect any of that. I mean it's CoHo so you expect some kind of magic with the words you are about to read but this was on a whole nother level.

It's been a long time since I picked up a book and refused to put it down until I finished it, it's almost like the book became a part of me in the last 24 hours (another thing it's been a while since I have done). I wanted to know about Verity, I wanted to know Lowen, I wanted to Jeremy and more importantly I needed to know their story. I needed to know what got them to here, how their paths became entwined, how it all unfolds. I guess I just needed it all. And then having it all left me with my jaw on the floor, my heart in my mouth and me wondering WTF just happened.

Having immersed myself in this story and CoHo's magical mind, giving myself to the story and letting my mind run wild with all the words, I have no clue what just happened or how the hell we reached that end but I know I enjoyed every twisted moment of it. The way it was written was perfect, the way the words captivated you was thrilling and the feeling of not being able to get enough of this story or the characters is a feeling everyone should know.

This story has been an experience and one I have loved reading and being a part of. It's one of those books that stays with you for a long time. One that gets you thinking and feeling and then you have no idea what to think of feel and still absolutely love it.

What an amazing book. I am in awe of CoHo right now.

I was convinced I knew what was coming right up
to the final few chapters, and I really think my finale would have been so much more thrilling.
The explanation ( under the floorboards) was so implausible and almost seemed as though the writer ran out of ideas and was in a hurry to get the job done. Other than the that, the book was well written and gripped me right up the disappointing ending.
