4.0 out of 5 starsThis is not for the faint hearted.
Reviewed in Australia on 25 August 2021
Having heard that Colleen Hoover delivers some very emotional works, when I needed to use the letter V for a book challenge, this one seemed like as good a place as any to start.

Honeslty. I have no words.

In the beggining I was sceptical. Mainly because Colleen used a word that meant an alcoholic beverage to describe someone eyes matching their tie without actually giving the colour. When I read that my hope for her hype plumted.

This isn't a romance, and when I realised it wasn't, my expectation changed.

When that happened, I was able to sink myself in this book. My emotions ran high. There were times I was disgusted in what had happened, there were moments I swooned, and moments I had to put my kindle down. Time when I thought I knew exactly how it would end.

I will neither confirm or deny my suspicions, though I wasn't entirely off the mark. That in itself shows that reading Colleen Hoover was worth it. That this book was worth taking the time for.

2.0 out of 5 starsSoft core porn mystery written like a teen drama

SPOILER FREE REVIEW FOR THOSE HAVING DOUBTS

I yielded to the hype. I heard "pace, thriller, insane twists" and I thought it was true - I wont listen to the masses again.
I am the wrong audience for this book in many ways. Romance is not my bag; I also took at face value the 'thriller and 'mystery' tags and I shouldn't have.
Even removing those personal preferences from my review - this is still 'meh' at best.

The storyline had enough pace but the plot felt seriously underdeveloped and the writing quality was very Y.A except for the scenes where she talks you though a seeming unrelenting amount of bl*wjobs and while I fine with reading about sex when it works in to the story line - I guess i'm self-aware enough to not be turned on by trauma-bond sex.
I didn't realise I was reading the (exposition only) twist because I spent the entire novel waiting for the author to get to the bit where ..... *twist ending* happened.

I guess I was expecting more depth- somewhere, anywhere! Or at least for things to not to be so obvious. To me this is soft core porn, mystery written like a teen drama.

Holy… Wow. I didn’t read the blurb, didn’t read the trigger warnings (I firmly believe you should). I went into this head down not knowing what to expect and my mind is absolutely blown. I cried fat tears through most of it, it really upset me, but it was so well written that I loved it. I gripped onto every page I turned and demolished this book in mere hours. This book is a work of art, I should have expected it, being from this amazing author but I just, wow.

It took me three days to read this book maybe I was afraid to get the end of it our I don't want to finish, but you didn’t disappoint, what a fantastic book Colleen, you never stop surprising us.

You’re trying to make us your tribe all crazy, because you accomplished that you know, from romance to dark is a significant change, leave this to Tarryn, we used to that from her but not from you, in a good way!

Can’t stop thinking about this book, is 4 am, and I have to work tomorrow morning and is your falt woman.

Disturbing amazing written, well done!

I Could give 10 stars, but I’m going to give 5.

Congrats!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing. Brilliant. Addictive

I found myself pulled into this book from the first page. Lowen and Jeremy have both experienced tragedy and come together when Lowen is hired to co-write the ending of his wife's bestselling series.

I stayed up well past my bedtime to finish this book as I just needed to know what happened in the end. The author is incredibly gifted. This book is creepy, disturbing, kind of horrible really but is written so well. If you enjoy thrillers then I would highly recommend giving this a try. If anything remotely scary isn't your thing then... perhaps not. I think I'll be second guessing everything for a few days now after that ending!

An absorbing well written story that keeps the reader turning pages. However, there is a very contrived ending.

I don’t know where to start with this one.it got so many rave reviews from, mainly US, readers and book clubs, I thought I’d try it myself. I’ve never read a Colleen Hoover novel so had no preconceptions but I didn’t think it was either well written or interesting. The novel is supposed to be creepy and suspenseful but it’s just a bit silly. I don’t want to give any spoilers but there were just so many parts of this novel that were completely unbelievable. When was the last time you heard someone say they ate a letter they wanted to dispose of? Seriously?

I hate romance novels as they don’t really reflect real life - they are far too convenient - woman meets handsome man, they fall in love and it’s all perfect - and they really undermine the idea that women can live happy fulfilled lives without being in a relationship at all times. Anyway, I hate romance and this is really just a romance with a slightly odd twist to it.

I’m glad it s a short book as it meant I didn’t waste more than a day on it and it’s safe to say I won’t be reading any more “CoHo” books ever again!

I am a massive Colleen Hoover fan and when I heard she had written something completely different I was sceptical that she could pull it off but I take my thought back as this woman has written something that I could never imagine and it’s pure genius. I have never read a book that makes we wake up in the middle of the night to check the end of my bed but Colleen has achieved this. I read this book with anxiety, fear and pure horror at what I was reading... and when you think you have worked out the plot BAM a bend in the road appears. I have not been able to put this book down, I will say this with pure confidence this is the best book I have read if 2018! Well done Colleen hats off to you you took a gamble and it paid off... if you want a book like nothing you have read before this is the one!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Never Trust the Reviews!!!

Here's one thing I've learned definitively through the purchase and reading of this book: DO NOT RELY ON CUSTOMER REVIEWS WHEN DECIDING ON BOOK PURCHASES.
I am FLOORED at the amount of positive reviews this book has received. An overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars....? HOW?
I'm not talking about story or content, as many of the few negative reviews there are focuses on the disturbing content. I'm talking about the absolute mediocrity of the writing. For all the positive reviews, I was expecting some exceptional writing, character developments and plot twists and it just was not there. I disliked every character. There was just nothing for me to like about any of them. They all made questionable, illogical and very unrealistic decisions. I mean, I expect to suspend my belief of "reality" when reading books or watching movies, but this was excessive to the point where I totally checked out of the story and was just reading for the sake of finishing the book.
As for the "disturbing content", again, it was just not there for me. Honestly, I picked up this book with the intention of indulging in some sexy (okay, maybe smutty) thrills and chills. And there were sex scenes. A fair amount. Of nondescriptive, repetitive, vanilla sex. That became annoyingly obligatory and prudishly lacking. And yes, there is some violence against children and I can understand why some parents would be turned off by this. However, again, it was so vanilla to me, and due to the inferior writing, was not as horrific as it seems like it should have been. I am a parent. I sleep fine at night after reading this.
I am not familiar with this author and I am not an avid reader of "romance" (ie, sex) novels, but I do appreciate a heavy sprinkling of adult content in my books. If you're looking for something well written, that will creep you out and turn you on, this one is not gonna float you boat. If you aren't picky with your prose (or particularly bold in the bedroom) and want a fast, easy read, go for it.
