High action in and around the Schloß Adler Castle

This is possibly the greatest action movie ever. Of all Alistair MacLean's books I feel this is the very best plot, multiple story lines, however with an over riding single story line that is only revealed half way into the story. This movie is terrific. In this Richard Burton is totally superb. Of Alistair MacLean's action stories, I found HMS Ulysses (I don't know of a movie about HMS Ulysses) and Where Eagles Dare (he also wrote the screen play to Where Eagles Dare) to be his best. I personally feel this is a much more totally action packed super plot story than his The Guns of Navarone. In Where Eagles Dare, every turn there is action, and with this superb plot the story rockets along at great speed. Clint Eastwood as an American OSS agent is Richard Burton's only trusted male companion and plays a good role, second to Burton as someone highly trusted but kept out of the loop until it is absolutely necessary to let him in on the whole aim of the movie plot. Richard Burton plays the role of an English MI 6 Agent, who has a couple of very capable pretty ladies, Mary Ure and Ingrid Pitt for help. There are cable car action scenes in this movie which are nearly breath taking, and with a terrific music theme. This movie has everything for spy and action movie buffs.

Buy the DVD version. Blu-ray is awful.

One of the greatest WW2 movies ever made.
The Blu-ray version is horrible. Grainy and terrible transfer. Buy the DVD version which is far superior in picture quality.
I own both so speak from experience

Rating is for the BR disc - the film still rates nearer 5
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 August 2021Verified Purchase
I have recently reviewed another film I upgraded my copy to BR (Rooster Cogburn) where I thought the BR version was worth every penny.
I also commented that buying older film in BR format was hit and miss.
Well Where Eagles Dare wasn't the worst BR format failure I've experienced, but if you have an upscaling DVD player already, it probably isn't worth the money.
(I'm fortunate to have a 4K player and a 4K OLED TV - not boasting, just contextualising - I think I get all the available performance from a DVD)
The visuals were slightly better in BR and the sound quality also slightly improved. But in both aspects, hardly enough to justify the cost - even though the price was good.
As for the film, I still think it is a very entertaining watch, for it's generation.

Directed by Richard G Hutton, who was also responsible for 'Kelly's Heroes', one might have expected much more from him. But he stopped directing and went into property. Somebody might know why but I don't.
He left behind this treasure from 1968. It's limited on the acting front but more than makes up for it with pure action from the get go. Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood are at their beautiful best. I suspect that they may have thought that they were dreaming------ very little dialogue (the onus was on Burton who, when sober, could recite the bible if he had to learn it) and just playing out your boyhood fantasies of shooting and blowing up anything that moves.
To be fair there are some plot twists that are ridiculously wild but are handled comfortably by Burton to Eastwood's bewilderment but we, the audience, know this is from an Alistair MacLean novel and there is much thought and intrigue to his works.
Cameo roles really for the supporting actors but they can all be proud to tell their grandchildren that they were IN the classic war film 'Where Eagles Dare'. Patrick Wymark, Robert Beatty, Neil McCarthy, Donald Houston, Peter Barkworth on the Allied side, some of whom played minor/major roles in many other war productions of the 60's and 70's. The German side included the pristine and proper Anton Diffring, Ferdy Mayne, slithery Derren Nesbitt and Derek Newark.
The girls, beautiful as ever, were Mary Ure and Ingrid Pitt.
Beautiful Boys Own stuff throughout, expect shootings and explosions, no sex or nudity, I don't remember obscenities, and English subtitles are with the dvd if you want them.

Blu ray review

This blu-ray film isn't blu-ray quality. In fact it wouldn't even be good quality if it was a DVD. The film appears never to have been restored and there is a lot of grain, assumedly because so much of it was shot at night. The sound is supposed to be 5.1 but I never heard anything coming out of the back speakers on my full surround and generally you simply a loud musical score.
The story itself was ok, rather than amazing with some poor script writing in places. Still, if you like a film with a lot of explosions and machine gun fire (everyone had automatic weapons and no-one had a rifle) this could be the film for you. Ingrid Pitt as always revealed a good measure of charm.
