About the Author

Born in Kent, D. S. Butler grew up as an avid reader with a love for crime fiction and mysteries. She has worked as a scientific officer in a hospital pathology laboratory and as a research scientist.

After obtaining a PhD in biochemistry, she worked at the University of Oxford for four years before moving to the Middle East. While living in Bahrain, she wrote her first novel and hasn’t stopped writing since.

She now lives in Lincolnshire with her husband.

When a cold case missing person is found 30 years later, it is up to the team to investigate and uncover all of the circumstances surrounding this person. Without giving away spoilers, this was one of those cases where a ripple effect of tragedy plague those left behind. This is story is a page turner. It’s a well written police procedural where the police themselves are shown to have their own flaws.

Whilst the main focus of the story is the crime, we learn more about the lives and back stories of Karen, Scott, Rick and Sophie. For me, Sophie is one of those characters that you think you should like, but when you’re reading the story, you really kind of loathe. Though she did redeem herself slightly at the end of Book 1, for most of this story I was back to quietly hoping she gets bumped off. We learn more about Scott and why he left his old station and Rick is adjusting to a change in home life.

Though this story could be read as a standalone, I recommend starting with the first book in the series, as there are references to the previous book and ongoing storylines. Finished this book in one sitting and it’s a sad tragic tale indeed where no one ever really wins. Already started reading Book 3 as I’m enjoying this series. If you like the genre of British Police Procedurals, then I think you’ll like this series too.

I would have given this more than 4 stars but, some of the writing tended to get bogged down, for example, a whole chapter about a junior officer's mother with dementia enjoying a visit from old friends. This added absolutely nothing to the excellent story.

I enjoy a good murder/crime book and these Karen Hart books didn't disappoint. It was a great who done it. Good build up of suspense and also it gripped you with the brilliant characters in the investigation team. D. S. Butler definetly writes in such away to draw her readers into feeling friends with her main characters Karen Hart, DI Morgan, Rick and Sophie. Their personal life is brilliantly folded into their police lives. Endearing me as a reader to them equally. Cleverly making me an instant fan of the Karen Hart series. So I hope that there will be many more Karen Hart books. As I'm too attached to these characters now and their investigating crimes. The two books in the series were excellently written, equally gripping and well worth a read, or two!

I highly recommend these books to everyone who enjoys a good mystery crime story. I've read many different books of this style and I have to say these are at the top with Karen slaughters books, with Harry Bosch books, I've embarrassingly forgotten the authors name whilst writing this review. (Old age)

Any way buy these books folks, you won't be disappointed.

The second in the series. I read the first & thought it was okay and that the strength of the stories would build; sadly not. Although readable, the books are a little shallow, starting with a good idea for the plot but never really moving on and including bits that are irellevant like Sophie’s friend & potential house purchase & her idea to ‘tip off’ the two guys toward the end of the tale - they just fizzle out and go nowhere. I will try again as I like DI Grace but it’s glaringly obvious that she will end up in a relationship with her commanding officer and that’s where the issues lie overall - everything that happens is barely concealed - just enough to make you doubt it can be that obvious; and then it turns out to be the case - it really is going to happen. These books so far are like episodes of an early evening TV drama.

I ordered this book on a Kindle recommendation.
Not knowing what to expect and already being a fan of several other detective book series I wasn't expecting very much from this story.

How wrong I was and very pleasantly surprised I was.! The story gripped me from the first introductory chapter and continued to grip me as it turned out to be a real page turner.

Not only is there a tremendous story which didn't fail to surprise me but D.S. Butler created a whole world of characters around Karen Hart the central character. As the story progressed we were slowly introduced to everyone on the police team and we learn of the central motivation of each of these people as D. S. Butler fleshed out every member of the team.

In a lot of police novels the author gets engrossed in remain story and minor characters seem to be forgotten about. Not so in this story . As well as solving the crime we are treated to the driving motivations of the criminals and are given beautiful little sketches of the minor characters lives so much so that we care about them and want to know more about each and every one of them

Roll on the future books in the series so we can return to visited all of them.

Congratulations on this book and I hope we don't have to long to wait for the next instalment

Have now read all of the books in this series after seeing the first two at a bargain price. After reading the first I immediately bought the series. I found them totally unputdownable. Having been a serving detective and worked on murder enquiries I found all books without exception fast paced, totally accurate as far as police procedure in modern times goes with great story lines. If you like the sort of thrillers that make you think instead of just reading then these books are for you. I do hope that in the future there may be more written to enlarge the series further. In the meantime I am going to read some of the authors other novels. I am sure they will be equally absorbable.

D S Butler does it again, excellent plot. I absolutely love these crime series and DS Karen Hart has started off well.

The second book in the series Where Secrets Lie keeps you thinking until the end.

The storyline is about a body that is found in a suitcase in a past headteacher’s home it was found because the headteacher had fallen down the stairs and in his incoherent state he told the two police officers not to go upstairs.

All of the characters are real and again the storyline believable. DS Karen Hart has experienced pain and trauma in the past and has an empathetic way about her.

The prologue is a great start. James Hunter, a recovering alcoholic who had fallen off the wagon, is pushed from his apartment over the balcony and as he was falling he just thought to himself ‘What have I done?’

‘On the surface, he was one of life’s winners. Only his drinking hinted at his dark secret’.

A crime is committed 30 years ago. DS Hart and the team work relentlessly to investigate and solve the cold case which in time became very current.

One character in particular is quite annoying Sophie she behaves like a petulant child however adds a difference to the team.... Detective Inspector Morgan hides a secret and Rick is becoming to appreciate the care his mother is receiving.. It’s interesting that she brings into the story a bully, DI Rob Miller who is quite happy to blackmail colleagues, in particular DI Morgan, who stands up for himself and is clean... I doubt DS Hart will let that go and will uncover some surprising information about him as the series moves along...

D S Butler could improve her writing by adding a little more depth. The story is quite light, quick and easy to read. She spends time creating interesting characters giving them personal lives that I could relate to.

I have been given the next book, complementary, in this series by the publisher and Netgalley for an honest review and can’t wait to get into it!!!

Need to do some work and gardening first 🤷‍♀️
