5.0 out of 5 starsGreat accent 😉
Reviewed in Australia on 7 November 2021
I sat through a Billy show in Canberra (Australia) circa 1980. Didn't understand a single word. "Concentrate" said my partner but that didn't help at all.
In the months before CoVid I visited Glasgow and saw most of the murals including the one of Billy. Nae bother with most of the local accent.
I really enjoyed this autobiography. Very natural style of expression, totally entertaining and I could understand every word!
Thank you Billy, you are such a joy!

2.0 out of 5 starsDisappointing series of anecdotes.
Reviewed in Australia on 20 November 2021
I had great expectations for the autobiography of my favourite comedian but I am left disappointed. I have read 140 pages so far and find the book to be mainly a series of anecdotes. The cruelty and abuse he experienced is described very well but most of the other stuff is trivial. He explains that the book was dictated to his daughter this is just how it reads. Connolly is a most interesting character who has had a remarkable life and this deserves a more coherent treatment than we get here. Granted I still have a lot to read but if it continues in this style it will not redeem itself.

Really disappointed. I’ve read all this before! Couldn’t believe it…I actually kept reading, thinking it must have some new material at some point. Finally gave up at 47% read. Waste of money and time. Can’t believe he “cheated” like this!

2.0 out of 5 stars Same old Billy, same old jokes.

Billy Connolly has always been a comic hero of mine, but I think he peaked in the 70s and 80s. I was really looking forward to reading this, but to be brutally honest like other reviewers have pointed out, he's telling the same gags he's been peddling since the 70s. Surely he could have come up with fresh material for something as important as this. Only 2 out of 5 from me, I've heard it all before.

My husband enjoyed this book, but says don’t read the earlier book by his wife as it’s the same! Every quip, every anecdote is the same. Bit cheeky rewriting the same book.

Bought this for my wife for Xmas as known it would be a great and interesting read. But imagine the image of my wife sitting down to read it on Boxing Day, cover is Billy Connolly, book spine is Billy Connolly but the print of the book was Alison Hammond’s You’ve got to laugh autobiography.
Best to say it did not go down well, and in fairness to Amazon a replacement has been sent out quickly.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shameful

Having been born and brought up in Glasgow, I thought that this would be an entertaining read.
Towards the end of chapter 4, Connolly is recalling his early school days and the 'touchy feely' tendencies of one particular member of the priesthood. He ended this chapter with, quote, 'I suppose even priests need a wee hobby'.
A hobby!! Is that the level of his empathy and compassion for the children who have been the victims of physical, mental and sexual abuse at the hands of the priesthood? To attempt to put a comedic slant on this disgusting behaviour is beyond contempt. Its not funny, not funny at all.

For me, this is a book that I could put down. I am a fan of Billy Connolly but after reading the first few chapters of his book in one evening, the rest of it took much longer to finish.
