5.0 out of 5 starsFocus on important stuff

I've been looking at 'smart' watches for a while...I am invested in the Google ecosystem but in my opinion the Wear OS options try to be all things to all people and end up over promising and not delivering. So I have been seeking a hybrid option that does the basics really well and is largely platform neutral (i.e. Google vs Apple vs Microsoft vs Samsung).

What are the basics? It shows the time, looks nice, provides core health measurements and the app is elegant and simple. How? I am an average guy - I want to be healthier - but I will not be performing a triathlon anytime soon... So.....I do not need a device designed by NASA; I need a device that is robust, reliable and simple to use. It needs to present info to me so I can make my own decisions and not drown me with useless data.

The battery life is excellent.

My experience has been so good I purchased a Withings Body + Scale too.

If the next generation somehow included Google Wallet & Google Play I'd buy Withings gear for a long time into the future. Great product - recommended.

1.0 out of 5 starsNot at all accurate
Reviewed in Australia on 18 December 2019
I wanted to upgrade from a Garmin Vivosmart 4 HR, and made a huge mistake by getting this Steel HR Sport. I did so after reading some reviews. I found the following problems.
The length of stride cannot be adjusted. It is set at 0.8 metre (my walking stride is 0.75 metre), so all distances are incorrect. Also, there is no difference in stride between running and walking.
The calories used is hoplessly inaccurate. I consume 2,200 - 2,600 per day, depending upon my exercise routine. The Steel never showed more than 1,700. It never recorded calories burned at gym on the cross-trainer or the bike, which usually were 300+.
Unlike the Garmin, it does not recognise when you are on a cross-trainer, or stepper machine, or rowing machine. So this exercise is never shown or recognised on the app at all. The only thing shown is the steps walking to and from the gym.
The only use for this watch, in my opinion, is to count steps and monitor your sleep. Even the max heart rate recorded is inaccurate. I have exchanged several emails with Withers support (no local phone presence) and their only comment was that they would suggest my problems as a software upgrade in due course. I have had the watch for 5 days and hope that Amazon will take it back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overall nice tracker
Reviewed in Australia on 12 October 2018

Bought it week ago and it still shows 100% of battery, maybe it is broken (?) or just energy efficient. I've charged it once only, that was after walk on Saturday (it arrived with about 40% of battery), then I'd watches on my wrist for the whole week. I sync data twice a day, thus watches are not connected to phone unless I need to sync. Not sure how good are measurements in comparison with other trackers as this device is my first tracker, but heart rate is more or less correct and in HealthMate app it is possible to see relative differences in rate. Steps are also are about right. Through this week heart rate was not logged twice, one time at night (probably sensor moved away from where it should be), another one - on my way home from office, don't know why.

Good points:
- easy to use, interface is basically one button.
- it automatically detects when I walk (not always correct, though) and records activity in app without need to select activity manually.
- all data is easy to find in HealthMate.
- energy efficient. In workout mode it consumes more battery, but in everyday usage it is perfectly fine after a week already without any sign of losing battery.

Not so good points:
- band is not very comfortable for me, I guess a bit too long and thus clasp is shifted from the middle, making it is kind of inconvenient: if I close it tight, then wrist feels bad; if it is loose, then watches move too freely.
- it has connected GPS (which is fine) and requires app to be open in order to record location data (which is not that fine).
- sleep detection is fine in general, but counts in time I lie in a bed in the morning even though I'm already awake and (I believe) move a bit more than in sleep.
- not really related to device, but anyway. HealthMate app can't log food intakes without MyFitnessPal, which means my data will be available to yet another service I need to register account in. Would be nice to have similar (maybe simpler) functionality in app itself.
- charger is USB based, easy to place watches on but easy to misplace as well if charger lies on a bed, not flat solid surface like a table for example.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long battery life, excellent app, non-obnoxious look... what's not to like?

Coming from few different "smart" bands/trackers with the most recent being Fitbit Versa, Withings Nokia Steel HR Sport is the best so far for my needs:
- Not loaded with unnecessary things like mp3 player
- Excellent battery life making it usable as an actual watch
- The app on Android is very light (both in design and loading the phone) and informative. I had no issue with syncing.
- No look-at-me style. Can easily pass as an ordinary clean looking watch
- Has vibrating alarm that actually works
- Step counter is not fooled by driving a car
- Built-in heart rate counter is accurate

I can think of only two down sides:
- If I wake up during the night and do something and then sleep back, the watch doesn't know I slept again so in the morning, it would register only short sleep duration.
- The watch face doesn't have fluorescent needles and numbers, so you have to press the button to see the time always.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great battery life and features
Reviewed in Australia on 24 December 2018

After several fitness/sleep trackers that had broken or didn't do as advertised, I decided to try the Withings HR Sport.
The watch itself is quite heavy due to steel construction compared to the plastic of most others. To me, it gives a good weight and seems very robust.
I primarily purchased for sleep tracking and general fitness which it does a very good job of tracking. There are 30 activities to choose from for the fitness tracking though I've yet to test the majority. Vibration through the watch for notifications is strong enough to be felt but not so intrusive as to be annoying.
Notifications though on a small screen are easy to read and provide enough detail to know if it's worth checking on the phone or dismissing.
I'm very impressed with the battery life - I've had the device for 3 weeks now and it is only down to 45%. This is with notifications on. I don't use the phone/GPS which I would assume more drain, however, compared to my previous trackers, this blasts them away (best I could manage was 7 days with notifications off on my previous tracker).
The fact that the watch itself uses mechanical hands (albeit electrically driven), means it is easily read in the sun and doesn't require button pushing or wrist spinning to get it to work. The hands aren't illuminated so can't be seen in the dark, however, pushing the button will light up the screen with the time and date if needed.
The only downside is the grey hands on a grey face can be awkward to pick in low light with older eyesight. In hindsight, I would probably go the white rather than black just for the contrast.

Overall, this is an excellent watch/fitness tracker with enough smarts to satisfy basic smartwatch needs - I can highly recommend this product.

this smart watch is not as smart as you would expect, problems with steps accuracy which is debatable on their site, and the button is easy to push in the middle of a workout so your session is paused or even stoped.
looks good,

5.0 out of 5 stars Long review....but I love this watch!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 April 2019
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
Right first things first, a pretty long review below but.... I did buy from Amazon but they sent me the white one instead of the black which has been returned, however I already own one of these watches (the one returned was a gift!) So shall review it as I know it.

I've been a Fitbit user for a long time, but the recently there have been issues with QC and nothing really that's excited me. As I wear a suit to work and in my own time do weights and powerlifting, I wanted something a little more classy that could also cut the mustard as a fitness tracker for my uses.

The design: This watch is slimline and pretty classy to look at. The glass on the watch is slightly domed and looks equally at home in the office than in the gym. The options available are a black and a white face. It's subjective of course, but I personally prefer the black face model. However this is harder to read in darker surroundings, but you can always press the button and bring up the digital time on the LCD display so this isn't a issue.

The Strap: This is by far one of the best smart watch straps (or watch straps in general) available. It's got a nice amount of give and flex within, is perforated for airflow and stretches with the contours or your arm. This is especially useful when swimming, as to keep the HR working well it needs to be pulled tighter to the skin to pick up the readings with water flowing around and under it. I've also got the red silicone and brown leather straps so can mix it up depending on mood and clothing choices. The watch due to the black face and grey case works well with every strap and doesn't look odd at all.

The Battery life: Withings quotes 25 days max life which is very impressive but for that you need to turn off all notifications and not use much fitness tracking as these are harder on the battery life. If training every day before a competition the battery lasts around 10-12 days. If every other day or normal use that includes 24 hour a day wear, I get about 17-19 days out of the battery. Better than my Ionic that could manage about 27 hours!

Fitness tracking: This is where there will always be some compromise for styling but not any that are especially negative. This watch uses connected GPS from your phone for route and pace tracking, so remember to take it with you. Has weight training options, has generic fitness and other workout options for if something you are doing doesn't have a particular category, has a number of workout options you can select to start from the watch directly, so you can pick and choose. Even has some more unusual ones for the type of watch it is, such as Pilates, baseball and elliptical. Works well with swimming, waterproof up to 50m, remember to rinse and dry the watch off afterwards to prevent skin irritation or degradation of the strap.

Sleep tracking: Unlike my fitbit, this picks up if I go to the toilet in the night and wake, or when my alarm goes off and I turn it off, rather than my fitbit assuming I'm still fast asleep. It gives you your sleep metrics In the app in a far more user friendly manner than the Fitbit app and the sleep stages seem to be consistent.

Notifications: The watch has a small round LCD in the face which gives you your notifications. Due to it being a hybrid with a tiny screen, you have to wait for the message to scroll and the amount of space is limited, so to bring up different metrics or continuations of what you are already doing you need to press the button. This is one aspect which could be considered negative but I don't have a issue with it. The trade off for the style is well worth it.

Charging time: 10% to 100% takes around 50 mins give or take.

Overall: I am very impressed with the Steel HR Sport and as alluded to above, my wife was so pleased with mine she wanted one too. It has a good mix of aptitudes that make up for any specific shortfalls. Looks right in any environment and was worth every penny of this £189.99 pricetag. Give it a try and see.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great-looking hybrid design
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 March 2019
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
Have had the Withings Steel HR Sport for around a month now, and have been generally pleased with it.

As hoped at this price point, the watch comes in premium packaging - box inside opens like a book and has a magnetic clasp to secure. Watch, charger and instruction manual inside.

In terms of hardware, this is brilliant; the watch looks great, and is quite slim-line too. I personally much prefer this hybrid design to generic smartwatches, as it keeps the traditional analogue face. I went for the black version, as I preferred the sleek design and it also means the digital display blends in to the overall watch face better. Watch hands are quite thin to allow visibility over the digital display, but there are small red accent colours at the top of the hands to make them easier to see at a glance. When in the dark, can simply press the side button on the watch to wake up the digital display to see the time. The watch feels premium, solid and well made; I have not had any issues with scratches or marks thus far. The strap is also very good quality and breathable, however I will likely buy a replacement leather strap for when I am not tracking exercise. I have not used the watch whilst in the shower or swimming, so cannot comment on its waterproofing etc. Charging is also very fast.

Software-wise, the watch has been good on the whole, but could do with a few minor improvements. The Health Mate app is easy to use and has an attractive interface. Initial set up was very easy; simply download the app, it recognises the watch, and then sets the time through your phone. Maintains bluetooth connection well, although I have noticed the range isn't great (i.e. sometimes notifications don't come through on the watch if I go into a different room from where my phone is). Syncing with the app is mostly fine, but can sometimes seem slow. Connected GPS only seemed to work automatically once for me before - doesn't seem to pick up location anymore, but maybe I need to start the activity with the app open on my phone for it to register. Haven't found the V02Max estimation option yet. Notifications are clear and easy to read as the scroll across the display, and the vibration alerts are good. However, notifications don't always seem to come through 100% of the time on the watch, and quite often the symbol of the app shows without then displaying the message. Most common social media apps are supported, but not all apps. Therefore hoping that Withings provide future software updates to iron out these issues and make it slightly more reliable.

I have been very impressed with the fitness tracking - monitors steps, heartrate and sleep well. Activity tracking is easy to start from the watch itself, by holding down the side button. The watch is capable of tracking all sorts of activities, and you can set your favourites to choose from on the watch. It also recognises activity without having started any recording; quite often the watch has recognised I have been playing football without me telling it I was doing any activity (also very impressed that it knew I was playing football and not just running). Sleep tracking has worked well for me too, and has been accurate.

Overall, I have been pleased with this watch - it is a more premium choice with great design, meaning I can wear it everywhere whether going to work or gym. Very high quality hardware, and software generally good but hoping for some improvements/updates to the GPS connectivity and reliability of notifications. Quite a high price point which is justified by the quality and design, but in terms of smartwatch/fitness tracking capabilities, there may be cheaper alternatives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looks great, battery is incredible. The future of smart watches.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 November 2018
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
The good. Battery life is incredible. I've charged it twice since I bought it a few months ago. Worlds apart from the daily charging of my two smart watches from Asus and LG. The watch is really easy to use, with a great single button for all actions.
The watch looks great (in black), with a decent strap.
Heart rate monitor is pretty good, it tracks me cycling for about 75% of each ride and estimates on the blanks. Likewise in the gym, although if you are doing push ups (or similar) you are likely to accidentally long press the button and end the workout accidentally.
The sleep tracker is interesting although the advice isn't very useful. It boils down to have a regular sleep pattern and try and get a decent duration. But the focus is on the amount of deep sleep you get. If that's not very much (e.g. You are in light sleep most of the night) there's nothing you can do about it, so it may cause more anxiety than help.
The bad. The sub dial will only track steps. It can't be changed to track activity. So if you do an hour in the gym and an hour cycling but only do a bit of walking the dial shows you as not performing. You could change it to target only a few steps but it then becomes meaningless. It should be reprogramable to overall activity time.
The step tracker also seems to be a bit low. I think it fails to count steps if you are pushing a pram.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent battery life
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 July 2021

I came to this watch from a Fitbit as I wanted a watch I didn't have to charge regularly. I wasn't too fussed about the fitness tracking, it is interesting to see how the steps are doing and I would pop into the sleep tracker the odd time and this watch does all these things but with 5 weeks battery life. It's one less thing I have to charge up every few days. Just have to remember to actually check it as it lasts so long.
It does the notifications well also, tells you who the text is from and the first few words of the text so you know if it's worth taking the phone out of your pocket to look. There is a decent vibrate for calls also as I don't always feel the phone vibrating.
I tried a third party leather strap on this which was easy to fit but I found the standard strap more comfortable and I think it actually looks better so went back to that.
There is just the one button on the side to scroll though the little digital screen at the top which keeps it nice and simple.
The bottom dial tells you the percentage of your steps goal that you have achieved.
I don't normally write such long reviews but this watch is worth it and when its life comes to an end, I will be looking for a similar model again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good all round smartwatch
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 February 2021

If you want a smartwatch to mainly keep track of your steps taken on each day but also effectively doubles up as an everyday watch then the Withings Steel HR Sport is ideal as it's not too bulky to wear under a shirt. It doesn't have all the features of many other smartwatches so if this is important to you then this watch will disappoint. It does however have an incredible battery life (depending on how many functions you use) so 2 weeks between charges is the minimum it should achieve. The only negative point is having a black face can make checking the time challenging depending on light conditions, but one push of the button displays the time and date so it's not a showstopper.

Love the look of this watch and coming from a Fitbit the battery life is amazing. Only issues are sleep tracking - it expects 45% deep sleep so my sleep is always 'poor' while it was ok on my Fitbit. Also I can get up to get a drink and it doesn't log an interruption. Only other issues are GPS frequently doesn't capture on my runs and the hands are very slim and have no blow in the dark bits so as soon as it gets dark you have to press the button to tell the time (I have the watch with the black face). Not deal breakers but things I would have like to know when I bought it.
