I've been looking at 'smart' watches for a while...I am invested in the Google ecosystem but in my opinion the Wear OS options try to be all things to all people and end up over promising and not delivering. So I have been seeking a hybrid option that does the basics really well and is largely platform neutral (i.e. Google vs Apple vs Microsoft vs Samsung).

What are the basics? It shows the time, looks nice, provides core health measurements and the app is elegant and simple. How? I am an average guy - I want to be healthier - but I will not be performing a triathlon anytime soon... So.....I do not need a device designed by NASA; I need a device that is robust, reliable and simple to use. It needs to present info to me so I can make my own decisions and not drown me with useless data.

The battery life is excellent.

My experience has been so good I purchased a Withings Body + Scale too.

If the next generation somehow included Google Wallet & Google Play I'd buy Withings gear for a long time into the future. Great product - recommended.

1.0 out of 5 starsNot at all accurate
Reviewed in Australia on 18 December 2019
I wanted to upgrade from a Garmin Vivosmart 4 HR, and made a huge mistake by getting this Steel HR Sport. I did so after reading some reviews. I found the following problems.
The length of stride cannot be adjusted. It is set at 0.8 metre (my walking stride is 0.75 metre), so all distances are incorrect. Also, there is no difference in stride between running and walking.
The calories used is hoplessly inaccurate. I consume 2,200 - 2,600 per day, depending upon my exercise routine. The Steel never showed more than 1,700. It never recorded calories burned at gym on the cross-trainer or the bike, which usually were 300+.
Unlike the Garmin, it does not recognise when you are on a cross-trainer, or stepper machine, or rowing machine. So this exercise is never shown or recognised on the app at all. The only thing shown is the steps walking to and from the gym.
The only use for this watch, in my opinion, is to count steps and monitor your sleep. Even the max heart rate recorded is inaccurate. I have exchanged several emails with Withers support (no local phone presence) and their only comment was that they would suggest my problems as a software upgrade in due course. I have had the watch for 5 days and hope that Amazon will take it back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overall nice tracker
Reviewed in Australia on 12 October 2018
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
Bought it week ago and it still shows 100% of battery, maybe it is broken (?) or just energy efficient. I've charged it once only, that was after walk on Saturday (it arrived with about 40% of battery), then I'd watches on my wrist for the whole week. I sync data twice a day, thus watches are not connected to phone unless I need to sync. Not sure how good are measurements in comparison with other trackers as this device is my first tracker, but heart rate is more or less correct and in HealthMate app it is possible to see relative differences in rate. Steps are also are about right. Through this week heart rate was not logged twice, one time at night (probably sensor moved away from where it should be), another one - on my way home from office, don't know why.

Good points:
- easy to use, interface is basically one button.
- it automatically detects when I walk (not always correct, though) and records activity in app without need to select activity manually.
- all data is easy to find in HealthMate.
- energy efficient. In workout mode it consumes more battery, but in everyday usage it is perfectly fine after a week already without any sign of losing battery.

Not so good points:
- band is not very comfortable for me, I guess a bit too long and thus clasp is shifted from the middle, making it is kind of inconvenient: if I close it tight, then wrist feels bad; if it is loose, then watches move too freely.
- it has connected GPS (which is fine) and requires app to be open in order to record location data (which is not that fine).
- sleep detection is fine in general, but counts in time I lie in a bed in the morning even though I'm already awake and (I believe) move a bit more than in sleep.
- not really related to device, but anyway. HealthMate app can't log food intakes without MyFitnessPal, which means my data will be available to yet another service I need to register account in. Would be nice to have similar (maybe simpler) functionality in app itself.
- charger is USB based, easy to place watches on but easy to misplace as well if charger lies on a bed, not flat solid surface like a table for example.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great battery life and features

After several fitness/sleep trackers that had broken or didn't do as advertised, I decided to try the Withings HR Sport.
The watch itself is quite heavy due to steel construction compared to the plastic of most others. To me, it gives a good weight and seems very robust.
I primarily purchased for sleep tracking and general fitness which it does a very good job of tracking. There are 30 activities to choose from for the fitness tracking though I've yet to test the majority. Vibration through the watch for notifications is strong enough to be felt but not so intrusive as to be annoying.
Notifications though on a small screen are easy to read and provide enough detail to know if it's worth checking on the phone or dismissing.
I'm very impressed with the battery life - I've had the device for 3 weeks now and it is only down to 45%. This is with notifications on. I don't use the phone/GPS which I would assume more drain, however, compared to my previous trackers, this blasts them away (best I could manage was 7 days with notifications off on my previous tracker).
The fact that the watch itself uses mechanical hands (albeit electrically driven), means it is easily read in the sun and doesn't require button pushing or wrist spinning to get it to work. The hands aren't illuminated so can't be seen in the dark, however, pushing the button will light up the screen with the time and date if needed.
The only downside is the grey hands on a grey face can be awkward to pick in low light with older eyesight. In hindsight, I would probably go the white rather than black just for the contrast.

Overall, this is an excellent watch/fitness tracker with enough smarts to satisfy basic smartwatch needs - I can highly recommend this product.

Love the appearance, it does everything I need it to, but I have to re- sync it every morning, so it won’t stay connected to the app on my iOS device

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly lacking as a Sports/Fitness Tracker
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 January 2019

First, the watch looks good, and it's very near to being exactly what I'm after.
The battery life is great.
Notifications from my phone work as expected, and are really handy.
The steps counting seems as accurate as can be expected.

The problems start to arise when the watch tries to do anything other than the bare bones stuff.
You can't use the Heart Rate monitor in any other apps, only the Withings Health Mate app and (I think) RunKeeper. So if you like posting to Strava, or use Endomondo, you are bang out of luck. It looks like it may be possible for me to use RunKeeper and then export the data to Strava, but frankly I can't be bothered with all that and shouldn't be expected to when every other HR monitor I've ever seen has been able to be picked up by other fitness apps.

The integration with 3rd party apps is a bit half-arsed, with the MyFitnessPal linking not really giving you any control over how it links. I don't really want 900 calories adding to my daily total just because I did a bit of walking, but tough luck if you want your calories to record in the Withings App, it's coming across like it or not. And why doesn't the Withings Health Mate app also take your Calorie Goal from MyFitnessPal? This wouldn't be so much of a problem if the Withings Health Mate app was easier to use.

The Withings Health Mate app is also close to being good, but has just enough problems to be really annoying.
You can't set a calorie goal. So you are left trying to slide the rate at which you would like to lose weight, and then checking to see it's effect on your calorie goal. Is -1.1 lbs per week okay? Nope. Let's go back and try -1.3 lbs per week.
You can track your Height? What the actual? It will even draw a little graph of your height over time. Genuinely baffling.
The "Programs" section of the app is confusing too. I have no idea what the sleep one is supposed to be doing or even if it is supposed to be doing anything. And that's IF it loads. It's a 50/50 chance I could just be looking at a spinning loading wheel indefinitely.

I think he tldr version of this review is; it's great if you are looking to replace a basic Fitbit (or similar step counting device) with something that looks more like a real watch. But it is not quite up to scratch as a Sports/Fitness SmartWatch.

I like the style of the watch and it’s very smart looking. But compared to other devices I don’t find the strap count very accurate. App is easy to use and informative but with one thing being inaccurate it does cast a cloud on other readings. All in all happy with the style just unsure about its accuracy.

5.0 out of 5 stars I should have bought this first

I've had a Fitbit Alta HR and a Galaxy Active and this watch is far better.
Fitbit have abysmal support - thousands of users have useless devices because the app doesn't work.
The Galaxy Active doesn't even last 2 days before it's dead.
The Withings fits really well on my skinny wrist and looks like a normal watch. The app looks good and the battery lasts weeks, not hours!

1.0 out of 5 stars My Withings Steel HR Sport fitness watch failed to record 20% of my steps and the watch lost 20 mins
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 September 2020
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
I purchased a Withings Steel HR Sport fitness watch as it appeared to be good value for money and had many of the features I required but I was disappointed to find that it recorded 20% less steps than the application my Samsung phone and a Fitbit watch, both of which I had calibrated. Then, a few days after I had purchased it, the hands on the watch suddenly lost 20 minutes (the digital time was still accurate). Even if there was a simple fix to these problems I had lost all confidence in the device. What use is a watch that loses 20minutes for no reason. So I sent it back for a refund.

Extremely good product. Activity and sleep tracking are very precise. Plus this device has heart rate. Plus battery is ensuring 25 days or so, although a little less if you are training regularly and engage the continuous heart rate. The Health Mate App is also very user friendly and efficient.

It really all boils down to what you need. If you want a smartphone on your wrist or the most feature rich sports tracker- this watch may not be for you. If you want a watch which you want to wear every day and feel like you are wearing a classy watch- which does quite a bit more than regular watch but a little less than over the top watches like apple watch then this is is amazing. It has heart tracking functionality, tracks sports, sleep and so on. It's easy to fall into the feature fight comparing this to every smartwatch around but how many people actually use those features extensively past the initial playing around time. I had apple watch, samsung gear watches, Android wear and they all had the problem- they try to replace the smartphone. But responding to a message is still clumsy so you end up taking out the phone, the apps are still limited and you end up fiddling around two devices instead or reducing a screentime of one. And i cannot count the times when my apple or gear wacthes batteries died in a middle of gps run or before it. So in the end I had to take tye phone anyway and i stopped using them. This watch is different, it provides you just enough to see what kind of notification and where is message from, so you jnow if it's worth picking the phone, so it really helps you calm down and ignore irrelevant stuff and helps to reduce mobile screen time. It is always with you because it's beautiful and very very comfortable to wear day or even when you sleep. The included silicon band is not looking great, but swap it for leather and this watch is beautiful. And even with a lot of sports you can forget about charging for at least two weeks. This is fantastic, it's just a watch when i want it to be but also quite advanced smart device hiding beneath humble look. This is definetely beats apple watch and otheR smartwatches for me, because it doesn't take anything from my life but adds a little, unlike smartphones on the wrist which bother you all the time . Great product which i highly recommend.
