5.0 out of 5 starsFocus on important stuff

I've been looking at 'smart' watches for a while...I am invested in the Google ecosystem but in my opinion the Wear OS options try to be all things to all people and end up over promising and not delivering. So I have been seeking a hybrid option that does the basics really well and is largely platform neutral (i.e. Google vs Apple vs Microsoft vs Samsung).

What are the basics? It shows the time, looks nice, provides core health measurements and the app is elegant and simple. How? I am an average guy - I want to be healthier - but I will not be performing a triathlon anytime soon... So.....I do not need a device designed by NASA; I need a device that is robust, reliable and simple to use. It needs to present info to me so I can make my own decisions and not drown me with useless data.

The battery life is excellent.

My experience has been so good I purchased a Withings Body + Scale too.

If the next generation somehow included Google Wallet & Google Play I'd buy Withings gear for a long time into the future. Great product - recommended.

1.0 out of 5 starsNot at all accurate

I wanted to upgrade from a Garmin Vivosmart 4 HR, and made a huge mistake by getting this Steel HR Sport. I did so after reading some reviews. I found the following problems.
The length of stride cannot be adjusted. It is set at 0.8 metre (my walking stride is 0.75 metre), so all distances are incorrect. Also, there is no difference in stride between running and walking.
The calories used is hoplessly inaccurate. I consume 2,200 - 2,600 per day, depending upon my exercise routine. The Steel never showed more than 1,700. It never recorded calories burned at gym on the cross-trainer or the bike, which usually were 300+.
Unlike the Garmin, it does not recognise when you are on a cross-trainer, or stepper machine, or rowing machine. So this exercise is never shown or recognised on the app at all. The only thing shown is the steps walking to and from the gym.
The only use for this watch, in my opinion, is to count steps and monitor your sleep. Even the max heart rate recorded is inaccurate. I have exchanged several emails with Withers support (no local phone presence) and their only comment was that they would suggest my problems as a software upgrade in due course. I have had the watch for 5 days and hope that Amazon will take it back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long battery life, excellent app, non-obnoxious look... what's not to like?

Coming from few different "smart" bands/trackers with the most recent being Fitbit Versa, Withings Nokia Steel HR Sport is the best so far for my needs:
- Not loaded with unnecessary things like mp3 player
- Excellent battery life making it usable as an actual watch
- The app on Android is very light (both in design and loading the phone) and informative. I had no issue with syncing.
- No look-at-me style. Can easily pass as an ordinary clean looking watch
- Has vibrating alarm that actually works
- Step counter is not fooled by driving a car
- Built-in heart rate counter is accurate

I can think of only two down sides:
- If I wake up during the night and do something and then sleep back, the watch doesn't know I slept again so in the morning, it would register only short sleep duration.
- The watch face doesn't have fluorescent needles and numbers, so you have to press the button to see the time always.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.

I love this watch, it does exactly what I wanted:
Look like a traditional watch, while providing basic fitness tracking.

It is my first fitness tracker, and I didn't need any crazy features. Just time, heart rate, calories burnt. This does an incredibly accurate job of tracking these.

The one criticism I have of this watch is that is uses regular glass for the watch face, rather than crystal sapphire - so be prepared for scratches.

If you don't want something like a fitbit, which screams "fitness tracker", this is the watch for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good watch overall but could be great

Battery life, looks and style are all very good. Build quality appears solid but would like tougher scratch resistant glass.

Black watch has poor visibility in low light. Numerals should be clearer.
Measurements are not accurate though I have yet to see a smart watch that is.. My iPhone is much more accurate.
Cannot detect that I am walking on a treadmill it thinks that I am on a bike.
Cannot comment on reliability yet. Had I known that I had to use an app to set up and give private info I would not have purchased the watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars The smart watch if you don't want to look like a geek...

Very good hybrid implementation of smart watch features into an, umh, smart looking watch. Surprisingly usable display which scrolls through email subjects, messages, reminders, etc. . Battery lasts about 3 weeks where notifications and wake-up alarm is used regularly. Accuracy for this kind of tracker is ok I think, as it is more about the relative numbers (did I do more steps, etc. today than yesterday?) rather than absolute accuracy. This is my second Withings watch and the only criticism I could offer is that the watch glass is just plastic and scratches easily. It would be good to see Withings in their next iteration take this on board (currently better glass only with 'special edition').

4.0 out of 5 stars Great-looking hybrid design
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 March 2019

Have had the Withings Steel HR Sport for around a month now, and have been generally pleased with it.

As hoped at this price point, the watch comes in premium packaging - box inside opens like a book and has a magnetic clasp to secure. Watch, charger and instruction manual inside.

In terms of hardware, this is brilliant; the watch looks great, and is quite slim-line too. I personally much prefer this hybrid design to generic smartwatches, as it keeps the traditional analogue face. I went for the black version, as I preferred the sleek design and it also means the digital display blends in to the overall watch face better. Watch hands are quite thin to allow visibility over the digital display, but there are small red accent colours at the top of the hands to make them easier to see at a glance. When in the dark, can simply press the side button on the watch to wake up the digital display to see the time. The watch feels premium, solid and well made; I have not had any issues with scratches or marks thus far. The strap is also very good quality and breathable, however I will likely buy a replacement leather strap for when I am not tracking exercise. I have not used the watch whilst in the shower or swimming, so cannot comment on its waterproofing etc. Charging is also very fast.

Software-wise, the watch has been good on the whole, but could do with a few minor improvements. The Health Mate app is easy to use and has an attractive interface. Initial set up was very easy; simply download the app, it recognises the watch, and then sets the time through your phone. Maintains bluetooth connection well, although I have noticed the range isn't great (i.e. sometimes notifications don't come through on the watch if I go into a different room from where my phone is). Syncing with the app is mostly fine, but can sometimes seem slow. Connected GPS only seemed to work automatically once for me before - doesn't seem to pick up location anymore, but maybe I need to start the activity with the app open on my phone for it to register. Haven't found the V02Max estimation option yet. Notifications are clear and easy to read as the scroll across the display, and the vibration alerts are good. However, notifications don't always seem to come through 100% of the time on the watch, and quite often the symbol of the app shows without then displaying the message. Most common social media apps are supported, but not all apps. Therefore hoping that Withings provide future software updates to iron out these issues and make it slightly more reliable.

I have been very impressed with the fitness tracking - monitors steps, heartrate and sleep well. Activity tracking is easy to start from the watch itself, by holding down the side button. The watch is capable of tracking all sorts of activities, and you can set your favourites to choose from on the watch. It also recognises activity without having started any recording; quite often the watch has recognised I have been playing football without me telling it I was doing any activity (also very impressed that it knew I was playing football and not just running). Sleep tracking has worked well for me too, and has been accurate.

Overall, I have been pleased with this watch - it is a more premium choice with great design, meaning I can wear it everywhere whether going to work or gym. Very high quality hardware, and software generally good but hoping for some improvements/updates to the GPS connectivity and reliability of notifications. Quite a high price point which is justified by the quality and design, but in terms of smartwatch/fitness tracking capabilities, there may be cheaper alternatives.

A Blakeman
3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly lacking as a Sports/Fitness Tracker
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 January 2019
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
First, the watch looks good, and it's very near to being exactly what I'm after.
The battery life is great.
Notifications from my phone work as expected, and are really handy.
The steps counting seems as accurate as can be expected.

The problems start to arise when the watch tries to do anything other than the bare bones stuff.
You can't use the Heart Rate monitor in any other apps, only the Withings Health Mate app and (I think) RunKeeper. So if you like posting to Strava, or use Endomondo, you are bang out of luck. It looks like it may be possible for me to use RunKeeper and then export the data to Strava, but frankly I can't be bothered with all that and shouldn't be expected to when every other HR monitor I've ever seen has been able to be picked up by other fitness apps.

The integration with 3rd party apps is a bit half-arsed, with the MyFitnessPal linking not really giving you any control over how it links. I don't really want 900 calories adding to my daily total just because I did a bit of walking, but tough luck if you want your calories to record in the Withings App, it's coming across like it or not. And why doesn't the Withings Health Mate app also take your Calorie Goal from MyFitnessPal? This wouldn't be so much of a problem if the Withings Health Mate app was easier to use.

The Withings Health Mate app is also close to being good, but has just enough problems to be really annoying.
You can't set a calorie goal. So you are left trying to slide the rate at which you would like to lose weight, and then checking to see it's effect on your calorie goal. Is -1.1 lbs per week okay? Nope. Let's go back and try -1.3 lbs per week.
You can track your Height? What the actual? It will even draw a little graph of your height over time. Genuinely baffling.
The "Programs" section of the app is confusing too. I have no idea what the sleep one is supposed to be doing or even if it is supposed to be doing anything. And that's IF it loads. It's a 50/50 chance I could just be looking at a spinning loading wheel indefinitely.

I think he tldr version of this review is; it's great if you are looking to replace a basic Fitbit (or similar step counting device) with something that looks more like a real watch. But it is not quite up to scratch as a Sports/Fitness SmartWatch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looks great, battery is incredible. The future of smart watches.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 November 2018

The good. Battery life is incredible. I've charged it twice since I bought it a few months ago. Worlds apart from the daily charging of my two smart watches from Asus and LG. The watch is really easy to use, with a great single button for all actions.
The watch looks great (in black), with a decent strap.
Heart rate monitor is pretty good, it tracks me cycling for about 75% of each ride and estimates on the blanks. Likewise in the gym, although if you are doing push ups (or similar) you are likely to accidentally long press the button and end the workout accidentally.
The sleep tracker is interesting although the advice isn't very useful. It boils down to have a regular sleep pattern and try and get a decent duration. But the focus is on the amount of deep sleep you get. If that's not very much (e.g. You are in light sleep most of the night) there's nothing you can do about it, so it may cause more anxiety than help.
The bad. The sub dial will only track steps. It can't be changed to track activity. So if you do an hour in the gym and an hour cycling but only do a bit of walking the dial shows you as not performing. You could change it to target only a few steps but it then becomes meaningless. It should be reprogramable to overall activity time.
The step tracker also seems to be a bit low. I think it fails to count steps if you are pushing a pram.

5.0 out of 5 stars A watch that does smart stuff
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 October 2020
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
I've had several goes at buying smart watches and always ended up frustrated with clunky interfaces, limited battery life and ultimately not meeting my needs.
If you are looking for a full blown Smartwatch to answer messages, calls etc buy an iPhone and an Apple Watch, if you want a watch that does smart things buy a Withings.
For me buying the Steel HR sport has been a revelation - the battery life is superb, I've been using it for a week and I still have 75% battery life left.
It lets me know if you if I have call and who's calling, same with messaging.
It looks like a watch.
It records heart rate, sleep and steps.
The companion app is easy to use, links well with Google Fit and the data seems accurate when compared against my fitness trackers.
It's waterproof.
The only negative for me is that the watch hands are sometimes difficult to see in some light, a different colour would help and if they added some luminescence to the hands they would be perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Washing machine proof!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 June 2019
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
A 40°C synthetics wash is approximately equal to 5000 steps!

But seriously, I've had this a while now and it's a great watch. The battery can last for months (if you don't use the workout mode much, pedometer and heart rate will still work outside this mode), and will charge in about half an hour using a little charging Dock cable thing when you do need to charge.

It's well made and looks good, I especially like the fact it's an analogue watch with a digital display for backup (it remains off most of the time, pushing the crown wakes the little screen and cycles its functions. The screen times out after a minute or so), making it one of the few fitness trackers/smart watches with an actual analogue watch face without a constantly glowing screen. It sticks out a little, but is better than a lot of fitness trackers, and the straps are swappable which is a nice bonus. Also, as noted before, it's sturdy/waterproof enough to survive a trip in the washing machine with only a few minor dents and scratches to show from it, plus now it smells cottony fresh!

The notifications are simple and not too obtrusive. The digital screen is very small so the first sentence of your notification will scroll across it. It's not really designed for reading things like texts, but i use it to determine whether I need to get my phone out to look at something or not. A negative is that it's almost unreadable in bright sunlight (but the analogue watch faces makes up for this when checking time and steps).

The phone companion app is used to keep track of fitness data such as steps, heart rate and workouts, and contains a load of graphs and stats for totals over days, weeks and months. It also gives you achievements for milestones such as walking a total distance equal to walking round the British Isles, which is a nice little motivator. It can also be used to decide on which apps send notifications to the watch which is good.

So to sum up, it's a good looking, sturdy, waterproof, analogue style fitness watch. It should fit most wrists due to the supplied bands design, and the fact that you can swap out the bands for different ones if you want. The digital screen is pretty basic and unobtrusive, it's good for getting the gist of notifications and finding out daily fitness stats, but If you want to use it as a full smart watch like an apple watch, this won't be for you.

So far so good.had around 3 weeks and battery is still at 55% from initial charge.very nicely made, accompanying app is easy to use and understand.watch itself is comfortable and I don’t really notice I’m wearing it.its simple to use and does everything I need although if you are serious into fitness etc then I’d maybe recommend a different model as to me this watch is like a normal watch with a couple of features that smart watches use so prob wouldn’t do everything a fitness guru needs but fine for me.i like how it has actual hands and only a small screen for info as that way it looks like a normal watch most of the time and also the battery lasts mega long without powering a big screen like most smart watches.definitely recommend for casual fitness enthusiasts or for people who just want a nice watch with a heartbeat monitor or step counter.
